In 1620s France, dreaded swordsman Gil de Berault returns from carrying out a mission for Cardinal Richelieu, and finds the Cardinal worried about growing opposition from the Huguenots in the south. The Cardinal also warns de Berault that dueling has been outlawed, and will henceforth be punishable by death. Gil, however, promptly disobeys the law and is indeed sentenced to death. The Cardinal offers to cancel the sentence if de Berault is able to capture the duke who is organizing plans for an uprising. Gil travels to the duke's castle and is allowed to stay as a guest, but the duke's wife and sister immediately suspect that he is a spy. He and his servant still make good progress, until he falls in love with the duke's sister, which complicates everything. close

Ivan Kouznetsoff, a Russian engineer, recounts during World War II his stay in England prior to the war working on a new propeller for ice-breaking ships. Naïve about British people and convinced by hearsay that they are shallow and hypocritical, Ivan is both bemused and amused by them. He is blunt in his opinions about Britons and at first this puts off his hosts, including the lovely Ann Tisdall, whose grandfather runs the shipbuilding firm that will make use of Ivan's propeller. The longer Ivan stays, however, the more he comes to understand the humor, warmth, strength, and conviction of the British people, and the more they come to see him as a friend rather than merely a suspicious Russian. As a romantic bond grows between Ivan and Ann, a cultural bond begins to grow as well, particularly as the war begins and Russia is attacked by Germany. close

But in France it became known that behind this mask hides the enemy of the French revolution, nicknamed the "Scarlet Primary" - the leader of a group of Englishmen who swore to help the innocent victims of the Robespierre regime. And Robespierre threatens his prime minister, Chavelien, that instead of the rebel's head, the guillotine will test Chavelien's neck. The trouble is that Sir Percy gave his word to his wife, who found herself in the position that, for at least a year, he would not set foot on the soil of France so as not to worry his beloved. How do you get it in England? Saving his head, Chavellin comes up with a cunning plan: with the help of a famous actress, he sets a trap and kidnaps the wife of Sir Percy, a French aristocrat who escaped the guillotine, freed by Sir Percy and who married her. close
