Ri Jong-Nim lives with her husband Jung Man-il on the outskirts of Pyongyang in North Korea. Their apartment looks just like everyone else, and the only decoration in their dark living room is portraits of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il and a radio distributing pop music.
Jung Man-il, which runs between China and North Korea on business, is arrested for possession of foreign goods and pornography. It is difficult to get his wife out of the country in advance. She arrives safely in South Korea, and after questioning Jeong-Nim receives the citizenship of the Republic of Korea.
The government instructed Kim Soo-jin to help her get back on her feet in a new country that is very different from the one she knew on the other side of the border. Jung-Nim does her best to try to forget about the traumatic experience of escape; she starts a new life, takes part in a training program, finds a job, and tries to adapt as best she can. But she can't forget her husband. Jung Man Il is still in prison somewhere in North Korea. At night, Jeong-Nim shows videos she and her husband watched together in Pyongyang, and she is gripped by despair. All the people she meets have their own problems: there is Gina, a pregnant teenage girl. Lee Joon Hyuk, disabled, divorced and as lonely as she is, and last but not least, Oh Song Tae, a gas station gas station driver at the local police station, who follows her. The longer she is separated from Jung Man-il, the more she misses her husband.
