The story in the film begins in 1955, when a young writer meets the editor Jochen Henzel, and continues the first success with the story “Woman at the Pillar of Shame”. Brigitte leaves her husband, moves in with the writer Pitchman, runs into trouble with the Stasi and the Party, of which she has never been a member, moves with a new partner closer to the coal mill, where she is engaged in manual labor, leads a circle of writers and continues to write herself.
