In 1685, Louis XIV banned Protestantism, abolishing the Edict of Nantes. Protestants were forced to change their faith, their churches destroyed, and their pastors expelled. The rebellious were punished with servitude and confiscation of property. Thousands of Huguenot families, refusing to renounce their faith, left France. But there were those who stayed and fought. In southern France, despite the repression, the Protestant Highlander peasants renounced the “papal truth.” In 17 years, the situation has escalated. The king refused to make concessions. Victims to back down. Until the day they were tired of being victims, they destroyed their executioners. The center of the uprising (1702-1705) was the Sevenna mountain range on the right bank of the Rhône, in the province of Languedoc. On July 24, 1702, Esprey Seguier, Abraham Masel, Gideon Laporte and their followers killed the Catholic Archbishop François du Chel de Langlan, killed the inhabitants of the castle, burned 2 churches, destroying their priests. The camizars began to smash the Catholic churches, the houses of the clergy, the merchants and the fiscals, took away the collected taxes and the church tithes. It was not until the spring of 1705 that the government made concessions on taxation. Despite the defeat of the uprising, individual outbreaks of war continued until 1715. The remainder were called kamizars (shirts) from the Languedoc word camiso, meaning "peasant shirt," as they wore white shirts over armor during the fighting at night. . . close

The film combines a documentary look at the Italian Navy during World War II with newsreel combat footage and a scripted love story performed by non-professional actors. close

How does art survive in a time of oppression? During the Soviet rule artists who stay true to their vision are executed, sent to mental hospitals or Gulags. Their plight inspires young Igor Savitsky. He pretends to buy state-approved art but instead daringly rescues 40,000 forbidden fellow artist's works and creates a museum in the desert of Uzbekistan, far from the watchful eyes of the KGB. Though a penniless artist himself, he cajoles the cash to pay for the art from the same authorities who are banning it. Savitsky amasses an eclectic mix of Russian Avant-Garde art. But his greatest discovery is an unknown school of artists who settle in Uzbekistan after the Russian revolution of 1917, encountering a unique Islamic culture, as exotic to them as Tahiti was for Gauguin. They develop a startlingly original style, fusing European modernism with centuries-old Eastern traditions. close

A feature-length pilot film for a proposed NBC series, War Stories is set in a battle-torn Middle Eastern country that is obviously Uzbekistan (but not identified as such). Cynical, hard-as-nails American war correspondent Ben Dansmore (Jeff Goldblum) balks at being assigned a new photographer/partner so soon after the newcomer's predecessor (who happened to be Ben's best friend) was literally blown to bits while covering a hot story. "There's no such thing as truth; that's why they call them stories." That is Ben's philosophy, one that he hopes to impart to idealistic young Nora Stone (Lake Bell). It takes a series of near-death experiences dodging bullets and fanatical rebels for Ben and Nora to find the common ground so necessary to their future teamwork. close
