The film has rather low ratings both because we are infinitely far from the American electoral system and because the world does not really want to see the background of democracy, how it is actually done, well, because of some sweetness of the film itself.
It is said that the prototype of the plot of the film was the election campaign of Clinton in 1992, well, the character really looks something like the former governor of Arizona. The story is told on behalf of a young black man, who for the first time in his life was taken to one of the leading posts in the election headquarters. His candidate is the governor of one of the southern states of Stanton (Travolta), a man not evil, a former hippie, but completely unable to keep his dick in his pants. After another accusation, he even has to hire a special person to refute all the crap that is told about him. But, it is clear that one day, after fighting off someone else’s dirt, the heroes will have to start producing their own.
By the way, I don’t think the ending of the film is so hopeless, the black boy, judging by the handshake, was no better than everyone else.
In fact, the film shows the daily life of the campaign, the environment of life on wheels and work 25 hours a day. The drug that technologists lack in peaceful life and how playing politics (and creating politicians) destroys human principles. And then all of a sudden you wake up and you find that you've suddenly changed the world.
