While at university, Emma appeared on stage, where she performed her own comic monologues as part of the Women's Hour troupe. After participating in the hit "Me and My Girl", Thompson joined the Renaissance Theatre Company. From that point on, her life and career were closely linked (until her divorce in 1996) to Renaissance star and founder Kenneth Branna.
Thompson’s film career began in 1989 when she starred alongside Kenneth Branna and Jeff Goldblum in Henry V.
Two years later, in the romantic film Die Again, she again plays with her husband Kenneth Branna. But the real fame she brought the films “Howards End”, “The Remains of the Day” with Anthony Hopkins and Vanessa Redgrave and “In the Name of the Father” – all marked by positive reviews of critics.
Emma Thompson proved herself as a gifted screenwriter in the film adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility”, in this film she also played one of the roles. Thompson's new work is the role of the first lady in the political satire Primary Colors (1998), where her partner was John Travolta.
