I love the films of the French director Ivan Attal, I have watched almost all of his feature films. Often in them he shoots his wife – Charlotte Gainsbourg, and in the last two – also the son of Ben Attal. Yesterday I watched his latest film, Les Chooses Humaines, 2021. In it, he turned to an interesting topic, trying to disassemble it from different points of view, which is not usually done in such films, doing it in a very convincing way. Of course, the basis should be thanked, first of all, the author of the novel with the same name - Karin Tuile. Young boy Alexander Farel (Ben Attal) returns for a few days to France from America, where he is studying at Stanford University to attend the ceremony of awarding his father - Jean Farel (Pierre Arditi), a famous TV presenter, the Legion of Honor. In the evening, he goes to dinner with his mother Claire Farel, a well-known feminist journalist (Charlotte Gainsbourg), who a couple of years ago left his famous father, who was notable for his windy temper, for another man, literature teacher Adam Wisman (Matieu Kassowitz), now living with him and his daughter Mila (Suzanne Juanne), who, in turn, left her deep-religious mother, who professes Judaism, because she was tired of all the restrictions. When Alex was about to leave, they found out that he was going to a party with his friends, offered him to take Mila with him, he agreed, and the next morning the police came to him and arrested him, because Mila accused him of rape. Alex is bewildered and denies he raped her, but no one listens to him. And a long process begins, the trial will take place only 30 months after all this, however, he is released on a subscription not to leave. During this period, we are shown the case from all sides - from the victim, from the accused, from their parents, in parallel, showing how everything happened (without details), but the culmination is undoubtedly the trial itself, where all this is published and discussed in detail. We see the suffering of the girl, who, however, also turns out to be not quite perfect, because at first she lied that she was a virgin, not so much for the accusation as for fear of maternal condemnation. At the trial are both witnesses on both sides, and lawyers on both sides, each trying to prove the rightness of his client, and we see that the most important role in all this is played by the different attitudes of the parties to the incident itself. The girl never expressed her disagreement during the incident, did not push him away, and for him this kind of relationship was a common thing, which is often observed in the current, especially young people, so it is really difficult to accuse him of violence as such. And by nature he was not a cruel person, but in expressions he was not ashamed. He is willing to admit himself a scumbag, but not a rapist. The process is over, but the lives of the characters have changed dramatically over the years. I liked the film, although not everyone will agree with me, some consider it to be long, but I watched without tension, the actors play very well and the question itself is very relevant. People are really very different and yet before doing something, it does not interfere with the brain, as it seems to me, and everyone.
