“We are accustomed to think that knowledge is stronger than the faith underlying religion. But in fact, it is faith that conveys the power of knowledge. Knowledge without certainty, without recognition, is dead knowledge. You may know that a plane can lift you, but if you’re not sure, you’ll never get in. We know God as scientists know electrons, by His manifestations, by His actions, by the outpouring of the power of God upon us, by the grace of God that we feel in our hearts.
Faith is unprovable. There have been many arguments, many attempts by some to prove that God exists, and others to prove that God does not exist. And never in the whole history of mankind has anyone been able to convince his opponents, for it is not the evidence.
The existence of God cannot be proved by reasoning. God can only be understood with a pure heart. Science proves the necessity of the existence of God logically, aesthetics shows the ideal being in images, and religion unites, brings into communication with God.”
Archbishop and surgeon Luke (Voyno-Yasenetsky).
Roland Joffe made remarkable historical canvases such as Vatel and Scarlet Letter. I came to this film with special attention.
In terms of scenery, costumes, atmosphere – the film is grand. Excellent camera work, from different angles shows the landscapes of South America.
But to me, the film, despite a certain vector of semantic load (about religiosity), seemed too sentimental. Maybe it's the year of graduation. I do not need intermediaries to believe in God. That's what the movie is about. In my opinion. Intermediaries.
But everything is taken here by the brilliant music of Morricone and the acting work of Robert de Niro. It's because of them.
Good movie. I recommend it. 🙏
