The film is about an elderly Japanese man, Hiroyama, who works as a street toilet cleaner in Tokyo. He comes from a very wealthy family, but his father’s problems forced him to leave the family. How long he has been a toilet worker is unknown, but he is very happy with life and seems to be happy.
The film shows, in addition to the main character (GG), the place of his work. By the way, a very decent job, because Japanese toilets are not only places of perfect cleanliness, but also works of art of small architecture. So is the bathhouse where GG goes after work. Also, on the screen, Tokyo lives its own life, which is curious for someone who has never been there, especially not on the front side.
Nearly two-thirds of the film is silent. The camera follows his seemingly monotonous course of life: early rise, work, rest in the park, photographing trees, a bath, lunch in a cafe and an evening at home with a book and music. Watching it is a pleasure, and even against the background of good songs of the 1970s and 80s.
Very expressive performer of the main role Koji Yakusho. He won the prize for Best Actor.
