Favorite chewing gum is back in fashion To start watching ' Twin Peak' immediately from the third season, ignoring the previous ones, is obviously doomed. In thirty-forty-minute episodes, the wild fantasy of Lynch and his fellow screenwriter Frost managed to cram bloodthirsty otherworldly spirits, aliens, Indian legends, military experiments, sinister doubles, dancing dwarfs and liters of damn good coffee. In the tangled mythology of the series, the devil himself will break his leg. Fans watched all the cut scenes and prequel 'Fire walk with me' read Laura and Cooper's diaries, bought a guide to the world of the series authored by Mark Frost himself and... still understood little. But that is the beauty of the series: any other show, so insistently elevating its strangeness to the absolute, any respectful viewer would abandon after a couple of episodes. But ' Twin Peaks' gives a sense of belonging to an unknown mystery, immerses a devoted viewer in the exploration of this world with his head, and to the charming, albeit slightly eccentric, residents of this town want to visit again, enjoy a cherry pie and learn how their lives have changed over the past 25 years. In addition, Lynch was the first who dared to combine the soap opera & #39; about a one-story America and an intriguing investigation of a brutal murder, thereby radically changing the format of television series. Thanks to Lynch, modern series have received strong thoughtful scripts and complex stories, and stars of the level of Anthony Hopkins and Tom Hardy do not hesitate to appear on TV. But the most exciting question still remains: will a person who once set the standards of modern television be able to feel comfortable now, leading work on such a large-scale project?
I’ve never had to write a review of a movie when I’ve only watched about a fifth of it. But now it is such a case, because the new 'Twin Peaks' is not a series in the understandable sense of the word. The channel did not order one seasonman in order to get a long-running show and year after year to earn on advertising. Lynch personally directed all eighteen hours of the film titled 'Twin Peaks: Revival'. The film is divided into episodes solely for the convenience of the audience. Although, it is worth admitting that there are many fans of the series who would agree and all 18 episodes are separable to watch on the big screen. But still, we are talking about a real serial film, and author. The director does not really care that the viewer may not understand the first time, what the hell is happening on the screen. There is no clear three-act structure characteristic of regular series. In the first four episodes, the action is continuous, albeit sometimes chaotic. The only pattern in the series is that each episode ends with a musical performance, in the spirit of past seasons with bar scenes. This assumption from the director is most likely added just for those daredevils who decide to watch all 18 episodes in a row when they come out - vocal numbers will become a kind of intermission.
To all those who were worried about the need for a new season, Lynch really has something to say. A quarter of a century ago, Cooper and I broke up under very mysterious circumstances. A bloodthirsty spirit has captured the soul of a kind-hearted FBI agent, and the audience was left to guess what will happen next. Lynch and Frost needed to continue the story by answering the question posed in the series finale. And they really told me where Cooper went. And then they threw unsuspecting viewers over their heads, followed by one answer, a hundred more questions. The main thing is not to be scared. This is not Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, who had to feed the audience six years of intrigue and promises to answer all the questions he invented, and in the end give us something called the series & #39; Lost & #39;. Lynch does not have to try to lure the viewer to wait for the new season. And why another one, and another and another? New 'Twin Peaks' will be a completely finished story, which means you can be sure that all the devilishness created in the plot makes sense.
It is difficult to judge the plot of the picture, if I saw only four hours out of eighteen, but one of the most important lines of the season is already being read. Doppelgangers. Sinister doubles. In principle, the theme for Lynch's work, and even for "Twin Peaks"', is not new at all. The whole plot ' Highway to Nowhere' was built on the idea of creating a sick mind killer a new personality for himself - sinless and naive. About the same identity substitution Betty and Rita from 'Mahlolland Drive'. But even in this case, Lynch dispersed: Agent Cooper now has not two, but three guises at once, one more terrible than the other. And we haven't seen this show yet -- who knows how many variants Dale's brain will create of itself. Lynch doesn’t borrow ideas or even quote himself—he’s just developing questions he’s long been concerned about. At the same time, the director did not lose his personal recognizable chips. Here are the car's headlights lighting up the night road, as if in 'Lost Highway'. Here's the camera slowly approaching the dead girl hidden under the blanket, just as it ends 'Mulholland Dr.' But on the wall of Gordon Cole weighs a picture depicting a nuclear explosion - the same was the hero of the very first film Lynch & #39; Eraserhead'.
Many media outlets recently rushed to spread the stupid news, saying that now Lynch is permanently leaving the movies. In addition to the reasonable question of how you can leave the movie, if you have not shot anything for 11 years, it is worth making one remark: it will not go anywhere. The director explained that he simply does not yet see for himself an interesting story that he would like to embody on the screen, but provided that one appears, he will definitely shoot it. But it seems that sitting in the director's chair for Lynch after the new "Twin Peaks" & #39 will not be that optional, but meaningless. Showtime channel gave the famous author carte blanche: shoot anything, people will still look and appreciate. What’s more, there’s a lot of stuff on television that Lynch couldn’t afford when he was working on the first season. Already in the first four episodes you can see the unusual for ' Twin Peaks' the amount of blood and naked bodies on the screen. Similarly, the director broke up, shooting a prequel that was on a level darker and older than the series. What else will Lynch allow himself, it is difficult to say. It is only clear that he will no longer limit himself - a new ' Twin Peaks' this is an absolutely author's work, in which the director finally got the opportunity to embody everything he wanted for so long. In every episode, in every frame of the new season, there is an indescribable stunning directorial style and a tireless desire to create. This is no longer a television series, but a cultural phenomenon, and there are all prerequisites for the fact that before our eyes is born magnum opus David Lynch.
