Conspiracy Theory The perception of such a film, as well as its final assessment, depends on many factors. And such a movie clearly does not fit into the standard framework of the mainstream, although it tries to wrap itself in a more typical and genre shell, conducting very standard plot development. Fans of searching for a secret conspiracy, brainwashing, espionage and flowing streams of lies will see in the picture, for sure, the most brilliant masterpiece. Easily suggestible people will also get a lot of impressions, if not lifelong paranoia. Well, the adequate people will quietly laugh at the Pelevins, risk being accused of “misunderstanding”, but it is quite successful to pass the evening watching such a peculiar picture.
All sorts of load about fooling the masses, the wild lectures of Che Guevara and other fly-blown nonsense can be quietly pushed to the background, considering in the plot quite a signature Hollywood story about how a talented nerd, being nobody, becomes a husband with a living goddess, that is, a god in the flesh. As they say – from dirt to princes, and around all sorts of intrigues, politics, and conspiracies, conspiracies. If such a movie were really made in Hollywood, it would be a dynamic and spectacular thriller in the spirit of Dan Brown’s film adaptations, with more dashing twists and much easier action dynamics. But the Russian mentality of filmmakers does not allow even shooting for the United States Ginzburg to unfold an exciting and interesting movie, layering pseudo-meaningful dialogues just packs on top of the standard-Balabanovsky story about bandits in the nineties of Russia.
The film lacks the correct adaptation for the mass audience, the film adaptation of Pelevin turned out to be just a film adaptation of Pelevin. With the removal of some plot-logical connections, individual scenes and various tinsel, reducing at the same time mowing under the abstruse, filled with a ton of obscene language, dialogue. However, the mat has remained so much that even the abundant propaganda of drugs does not obscure all that rotten profanity from the screen. On the other hand, it is clear that the film is not for children’s ears and eyes, and to show the vitality of Russia without the mat is impossible, but why do it so obsessive and in such large doses? At the same time, they still manage to wash all the erotic in the most horrific way! Like censorship got to the brain and decided to facilitate the video?
Resentment about what is happening can be long and intense, as I think and argue with fans of the book (and now, probably, the film) about the value, correctness and adequacy. However, to come to terms with the current nonsense of free author's fiction, you can, with fun looking into the plot problems, spilling out hallucinations and even find from time to time seeds of logic and truth among the current stream of phrases of this view of what is happening around.
Cinema dedicated to brands and advertisers struggles to be something bigger and meaningful. At the same time, it has neither the beginning nor the end of the narrative - forgetting to answer numerous questions that pop up, both in the viewer and in the characters of the film. Confusing more and more, devoid of resolution action, sadly stretches through an innumerable number of characters – the film is overloaded with them so much that even interest to understand these personalities almost does not arise. At the same time, it is worth paying tribute to the technical part - Ginzburg shot really qualitatively, the visual part, including even the graphics, looks surprisingly good. A bright cast enhances positive impressions. And even going back to the character overload, many are really remembered for their images.
And the music, of course. The creators deserve special praise! The best hits of DDT, Agatha Christie, Chizha, Untouchables, and other well-chosen music creates a pleasant atmosphere and gives positive emotions when watching. Except that flashed on the posters Kinchev (the group “Alice”) oh how lacking such a film song “My generation” – that’s what in general should take the key and title song, moreover, the name obliges. You missed it, or maybe you just didn’t get it.
However, to watch a strong Russian masterpiece about the nineties, accompanied by the best rock music of our country, it is much easier to revise the dilogy “Brother”, which in this film did not forget to mention. “Generation P” turned out too specific and authorial, with all its wrapper for a large audience. This is not a genre film, this is an arthouse nonsense trying to break out into the masses and partially zombie people with its very ridiculous, unreasonable and even not really disclosed ideas. Conspiracy theory without obvious reasons and explanations, but with the last role of Trachtenberg in the movie, with the swearing Gordon, with the best rock hits accompanied and competent directing to present the madness in the frame. It could, in principle, be even more pschedelic, but then the audience of the picture would sharply decrease. Many people, if they don’t, will laugh. Satirically, the film came out quite watchable, but very long and with extremely rare glimpses of common sense, successful scenes and pleasant elements. You can watch, but not everyone!
