Cornelia Funke is a German author of more than forty children's books, for which she has received many awards.
Funke writes mainly in the style of fantasy. Her works are very popular in Corneli’s homeland, they have been translated into several languages, including Russian. Before becoming a writer, Funke was a social worker, dealing with the complications of disabled children.
During this period, the writer realized the value of stories that helped her wards to distract from sad reality and to be carried away in the imagination in fairy-tale worlds. Cornelia also studied book illustration while studying at the Hamburg College of Design. And she began her own career in writing children's books as an illustrator.
Funke has often been compared to writers such as
Philip Pullman and J.K. Rowling. This was due to the fact that her works are often filmed, which allowed her to become a screenwriter. To date, “Dragon Riders”, “Ink Heart” and “King of Thieves” have been filmed.
The book “Ink Heart” tells the story of a twelve-year-old girl Maggie. Like her father Mo, she loves reading. Everything would be fine, but one day a man with a strange name Sajeruk, who is known from somewhere to Mo, appeared in the house and warned them that the evil Capricorn wants to seize what is stored in their house. Maggie realized that this subject was a book. It turned out that Mo has a unique gift: when reading aloud, he is so fond of the book that he is able to open the connection between the world of the novel and our world.
In 2005, the Times called Funke “the most powerful German on the planet.” The work “King of Thieves” received two honorary awards in the field of children’s literature in the nomination “Best Children’s Book of the Year”, and the Guardian placed the work at the first position of the hit parade of children’s literature.
