A graduate of Queen's College in Cambridge, Ian Softley initially became known as the director of video clips and documentaries dedicated to various musicians: he collaborated with such famous people in the music world as Robert Fripp and Andy Summers (ex-"The Police"). Softley's first feature film was Backbeat (1993) (in the Russian box office - "The Beatles: four plus one"), dedicated to the early days of the legendary group "The Beatles" and the life story of the original member and friend of John Lennon, Stuart Sutcliffe (in the film he played Stephen Dorff). The debut was successful - in 1995 the film received the award of the British Academy of Film and Television in the category "Best Musical Film", and Softley himself not only demonstrated directorial talent, but also was able to convey to the viewer his new, original view of the textbook story. Softley's next film, the youth cyberpunk thriller Hackers (1995), was markedly different from its predecessor - the story of a group of hackers accused of computer hooliganism, hacking, etc., although it was not a huge success, but quickly gained cult status with a certain part of the audience. Once again, a dramatic change in genre: after a two-year hiatus, a triumphant return followed with the romantic drama Wings of the Dove (1997), an adapted version of the Henry James novel. The film was repeatedly nominated for various film awards, and the lead actress, actress Helena Bonham Carter, according to film critics, played one of her best roles in this film. Softley's new work was a psychological drama with elements of science fiction "Planet Ka-Pax" (2001) with the participation of stars of American cinema Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges.
