David Mitchell was born in January 1969 in Southport, England. After school he entered the University of Kent, where he received a degree in literature. For a year he lived in Sicily, and then decided to move to Japan, Hereshima, where he got a job as an English teacher at one of the universities. While in Japan, David married and, together with his wife Keiko and two children, returned home to England eight years later.
David Mitchell made his debut as a writer in 1999, when he published his first novel, The Literary Ghost. The book was an incredible success, forming an undisputed competition with authors such as Antony Bayette, Rachel Cask and Lawrence Norfolk. The work was awarded the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize as the best book written by a young author and was also nominated for the Guardian First Book Award. Unlike most aspiring writers who build the plot of their first works on the basis of personal experience, Mitchell managed to create a rather convincing story consisting of several stories that take place simultaneously in different parts of the world, and tell them by different people.
Two years later, Mitchell published his second novel, Dream No. 9. This time, the author decided not to mix a large number of styles and genres, but rather to create a single storyline that tells how a Japanese young man tries to find a father in modern Tokyo. The novel repeated the success of the previous book and was nominated for the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. In addition, he was shortlisted for one of the most prestigious English literary awards Man Booker.
In 2004, the novel “Cloud Atlas” was published, in which the author decided to return to the traditions of the first novel, presenting the whole range of genres in the book – from science fiction to historical sketches. The author was waiting for another success – “Cloud Atlas” was awarded the British Book Literary Fiction Award, and was also nominated for the Booker Prize. The author himself also did not go unnoticed, receiving the title of “Best Young British Writer” from the Granta Association.
Mitchell’s next novel “Black Swan Green”, which was released in 2006, was included in the long list of the Booker Prize. In 2010, he published his fifth novel, The Thousand Autumn Days of Jacob de Zet.
The author currently lives with his family in the small Irish town of Cork.
In 2012, the film “Cloud Atlas” was released on the big screens, based on the novel of the same name by David Mitchell.
