In 1954, together with Tengiz Abuladze, he made two documentaries, and in 1955 – the feature film “Lurja Magdana”, awarded a prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1956. One of the brightest pages in the history of Soviet cinema was the film "Father of the Soldier" staged by Chkheidze - about a peasant-vinegrader (this role was perfectly performed by Sergo Zakariadze), in search of his son-soldier who got into the acting army and with her passed to the end of the war.
Among the best works of the outstanding Georgian director can also be called the adaptation of the immortal novel by Miguel Cervantes - the film "Life of Don Quixote and Sancho", released in 1988.
In 1973, Rezo Chkheidze became the director of the Georgian Film Studio. In addition to directorial work, there are also several scripts on his creative account.
