John Sales was born on September 28, 1950 in Shenectadee (New York, USA). He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School and Williams College in Psychology. In the mid-1970s, John Sales tried his hand at the literary field, publishing his first novel, Pride of the Bimbos, in 1975. This book was followed by another novel and a small collection of short stories, which received critical acclaim but had no commercial success. Around the same time, John Sales began his film career, joining a host of writers who worked for Roger Corman. His debut was the script for the horror Piranha (1978). In 1978, he made his film debut as a director (and actor) with Return of the Secaucus 7 (1980), shot over four weeks for just $40,000. The film received the prize of the Los Angeles Association of Film Critics and an Oscar nomination for best screenplay. In the 1980s, John Sales became famous for a number of low-budget, but very successful films, including Mathevan (1987), Eight Men Leave (1988), Brother from Another Planet (1984). Of his works in the 1990s, the most famous are Passion Fish (1992), Mimic (1997), Fast and Dead (1995), Apollo 13 (1995), Lone Star (1996), Limbo (1998). Outside the cinema, John Sales is known as a writer and playwright, who created the plays A New Hope for the Dead Man and Muft, as the director of three video clips by Bruce Springsteen and many television films.
