Alexander Nikolaevich Vertinsky was born on March 21, 1889 in Kiev. After graduating from high school, he played in the drama theater "Alator" in Moscow. In 1912, Alexander Vertinsky made his debut in cinema, playing the role of an angel in the film What People Are Living With. For several years he was on various auxiliary work with film crews in the studio of A.A.Khanzhonkov, starred in episodes and by 1917 he played in 18 films.
Since 1915, Vertinsky began to perform on the stage as an author and singer of songs, and in 1916, the artist came to fame. In addition, his stories and feuilletons were printed by many Russian newspapers and magazines. In 1919, Alexander Vertinsky emigrated from the civil war-torn country. In 1920-1943 he performed in Poland, Romania, Germany, France, Italy, England, China, USA and many other countries.
In 1943, Alexander Vertinsky returned to his homeland. In the USSR, he performed concerts, continued to act in films. In several films, he created vivid, memorable roles, for example, the Cardinal in the film The Conspiracy of the Doomed (1950) and the Doge of Venice in the historical drama The Great Warrior of Albania Skanderberg (1954). But perhaps the most famous film is Anna on the Neck, shot according to the story of A. P. Chekhov in 1954 by the director Isidor Annensky. In this film, Alexander Vertinsky played the role of Prince.
It is worth noting that the artist’s wife, Lydia Vertinskaya, was not only a great graphic artist, but also starred in several films, and their daughters Marianne and Anastasia Vertinsky became stars of Soviet cinema.
