Chen Kai Ge Chen Kaige was born on August 12, 1952 in Beijing (PRC) in a family of filmmakers. After graduation, he worked in the agricultural commune, served in the army. Since 1975, Chen Kaige worked at a Beijing film factory, and in 1978 he entered the Beijing Film Institute. During his studies, he directed the TV movie “Farewell to Yesterday”, was an assistant director. In 1984, Kaige, along with his fellow institute members Zhang Yimou and Hu Kwon, shot the landmark film Yellow Land for Chinese cinema. The film, which marked the beginning of the “new Chinese cinema”, was awarded the Grand Prize of the Locarno Film Festival, as well as awards in Nantes and Hong Kong. Then the military drama “The Great Parade” (1986), awarded by film festivals in Montreal and Turin, appeared a year later “The King of the Children” (1987). Since 1987, Chen Kaige has been interning at New York University Film School for two years. However, the parable “Life on the String” that he set in 1991 did not become as bright an event as the first two films of the director. Much more successful was the drama “Farewell, my concubine”, which received high recognition of the world film community, as evidenced by the “Golden Palm” of the Cannes Festival. The main roles in the film were played by Gong Li and Leslie Chun. The director invited these same actors to star in the film “Temper Moon” (1996). At the Cannes Film Festival in 1999, Chen Kaige's new work - the historical drama "The Emperor and the Murderer" was shown. The main female role in the film - Mrs. Zhao - again performed actress Gong Li.
