The only and beloved son of Arthur Leonard and Margaret (Peggy) Joyce, Whiting began climbing Olympus as a singer from the age of eleven. His truly angelic voice gathered a crowd of parishioners in one of the Catholic churches in north London, where Leonard was the first soprano in the boys' choir.
After two years of choral singing, the boy accidentally meets an experienced theater agent who helps Leonard get the role of the pocket thief Dodger in the musical Oliver! based on the novel by Dickens. In 1965, Leonard played a young noble robber in his first true film, The Legend of Dick Turpin. Luck smiled at the handsome young man - in the same year Leonard was invited to the troupe of the National Theatre.
At the same time, Whiting studied at St. Richard of Chichester College and graduated two weeks before starting work on the famous role of Romeo in the film Franco Zeffirelli.
"Romeo and Juliet" 1968. Zeffirelli auditioned for three months to select Romeo and 300 applicants and eventually confirmed Whiting. The film, which was released, became a worldwide sensation.
