In his first feature-length film, Fast and Painless, which was released in 1996, Akin talks about the fate of many expats who ended up in Germany. The film tells about those people who break down, rush to extremes, look for a way out in order to “either get out into people or die.”
The film “Fast and without pain” was awarded the “Bronze Leopard” award at the Locarno Film Festival, as well as the “Pierrot” award at the Munich Film Festival in the nomination “Best Young Director” and the “Golden Alexander” award, which was presented in Tessaloniki, Macedonia.
In 2000, Fatih Akin directed the hilarious, sunny comedy In July: The Aztec Sun. A bright, colorful film takes the viewer on a fascinating journey, on the roads of which there are human kindness, sincerity, honesty in relationships and, of course, love.

In 2007, Akin released the film On the Edge of Paradise, which is filled with more philosophical reflections on politics, and the script for it he wrote independently.
