Marika Rokk was destined to live ninety years in the world and see two world wars and almost fifty years of peaceful life filled with creativity and memories for her. One of the most famous actresses in Germany, whose fantastic talent (fortunately and unfortunately at the same time) was appreciated by the Third Reich, Marika was Hungarian by birth. She was born, however, on November 3, 1913 in Cairo, where at that time worked her father, architect.
Upon the return of the family to their native Budapest, the parents pay for Marika dance lessons - already at the age of eight, the girl showed great talent. Then, already in Paris, Reck dances in Moulin Rouge, soaking up the bohemian atmosphere and recklessness of this institution. For an emotional, explosive dancer, demonstrating the same honed technique of movement, the whole world was opened: in 1925-1929, Marika successfully performs on Broadway, in New York and in Monte Carlo, a little later “lights up” in European capitals. She will be applauded by London and Vienna, Paris and Budapest, Cannes and Berlin.
In 1930, Marika first tried to play in a movie, she was captured in the episode of the film “Why Sailors leaves the house”. The experiment turned out to be a success: the queen of dance began to invite Hungarian and British directors. In 1934, while touring Germany, the actress signed a two-year contract with the UFA film studio. She wanted one thing - to dance and only to dance, but cooperation with the Germans, which began with the painting "Light Cavalry" after the end of the Second World War, Rekk will be remembered almost as a crime.
Charges of espionage with Marika will be removed only in 1947: as the wife of the German director Georg Jacobi, Reck starred in several very successful films, enthusiastically accepted in Hitler’s entourage, and this aroused suspicions. However, the art of Reck was above politics: the film
"The woman of my dreams" It was enthusiastically accepted even in the USSR (although in Soviet cinemas it was shown under the name "The Girl of My Dreams").
In the fifties Marika again began to act in the classic films of her husband and perform on the stage of the theater of Vienna, Munich, Hamburg and West Berlin as an operetta actress. Her energy could be envied by young colleagues: the age of Marika Rekk remained behind the scenes when she danced the Hungarian chardash.
The last film with the participation of Marika - "Königswald Castle" (Schloß Königswald), created in 1988 - the legendary dancer turned 75 years old. In 2004, Marika Rekk died of a heart attack: her tired heart stopped forever. Over Austria, the last refuge of a dream woman, the sky of May shimmered with azure - how long ago, in the forty-fifth, when there was still a whole life ahead. /
