French screenwriter, actor and director Olivier Marchal was born on November 14, 1958 in Talens in a family of confectioners. He studied at the Jesuit College in Bordeaux. His first profession had nothing to do with filmmaking. He began working as a police officer in 1980, first in Versailles and then in Paris.
While still in service, he is already beginning to master the basics of acting, attending courses. Marshall’s career on television began with secondary roles (as with many actors) in the series in the genre of detective investigations. He even wrote scripts for them. Marshal's film debut as an actor took place in 1988, and when in 1989 Yves Rainier continued to work on the filming of the series Commissaire Moulin, Marshall took part in the project as a screenwriter, and sometimes an actor. Only in 1993 Olivier finally left the police service to devote himself to cinema. However, most of his work, whether as a screenwriter, director or actor, was related to his first profession.
His “test of the pen” in directing took place in 1999, when the short film “The Good Policeman” was released, which was celebrated at the Cognac Festival. The year 2000 was marked for him by the main role of commandant Pierre Rivera in the series “Police station”, which was based on the book by the writer Hugues Pagan. Moreover, this project is one of his own works, as he co-wrote the script with another former police officer. This was followed by his film “Gangsters”, filmed in 2002, and the hit French film distribution “36, Quay Orfevre” (2004) from the genre of black detectives. The following years were accompanied by the release of many films, to which he “had a hand”, the most popular of which, perhaps, are:
Once in Marseille (2008) and
Untouchables (2011).
