Hans Petter Moland was born in 1955 in Oslo, Norway. At the age of 16, he received a scholarship from an American foundation and went to the United States to study exchange. He graduated from Emerson College in Boston, where he studied media and film and received a bachelor's degree. After graduating from college, Moland returned to his native Norway for a year, worked as a director at the National Theatre in Oslo, and then moved to New York. He graduated from Emerson College in Boston, where he studied media and film and received a bachelor's degree. After graduating from college, Moland returned to his native Norway for a year, worked as a director at the National Theatre in Oslo, and then moved to New York. There he wrote scripts at night and worked as a carpenter during the day. Later, Moland worked for three years in one of the production companies, and in 1985 he founded his own film production company in Norway, which eventually became the largest production company in Scandinavia. Moland worked a lot as a producer, he put commercials. In 1993, he made his film debut, directing the feature film The Last Lieutenant. He was followed by Zero Kelvin (1995) and Aberdeen (2000). In 2005, Hans Petter Moland released his new film, The Land of Hope.
