He was born in East Orange, New Jersey. A handsome starring actor with a stunning baritone and a light smile in musicals of the late 1940s and 1950s fallen in genre combat by the late 1950s. The former band singer and nightclub performer with a God-given voice McRay left for Hollywood in 1948 under a contract with Warner Brothers who promoted him with notable success - as an attractive lead singer with something from the image of aging studio pop singer Dennis Morgan. He reached his personal peak in starring roles in Oklahoma (1955 as the frivolous Curly) and Carousel (1956 as the carnival barber Billy Bygelow's role, which he won when Sinatra dropped out of production), but made only two more films before returning to the stage and nightclubs.
His daughters Meredith and Heather McRay played in movies and TV shows in the 1960s and 1970s; Shill's ex-wife ("The Jackie Gleeson Show") wrote an autobiography about him in 1992.
