James Whitmore was born in 1921 and attended Yale University. He was a member of the Yale Drama School troupe and a founding member of Yale Radio. After World War II, after serving in the Marine Corps, Whitmore made his Broadway debut in 1947 as an ostrich sergeant in The Order. He has been acting in films since 1949, mostly in supporting roles - in the role of rude but human guys, and for performing a similar role in Battlefield (1949), in his second film, Whitmore was nominated for an Oscar.
