A former journalist and stock market player, this unquestionably handsome starring performer starred in a slew of 1930s films before making the decision to stand on the other side of the camera at the end of the decade. Not exactly a macho type, sometimes he played people with a weak character who were raised by the love of a strong woman. He went on to direct 20th Century Fox in 1937 and spent several years filming horror films and melodramas for which he sometimes wrote scripts himself or co-wrote with someone else. These were the best paintings by Charlie Chan and Mr. Moto.
