But the rise of his conducting career came in the 90s. In 1990 he founded the Russian National Orchestra. Under his leadership, the band gained a reputation as one of the best orchestras in the world. In 1999, Mikhail Pletnev moved to the rank of Honorary Conductor to devote more time to performing as a pianist and composer. At the request of the orchestra, the maestro again headed the RNO in January 2003 and joined the Conductor's College formed by the collective.
He acts as a guest conductor with other leading musical groups in the world, including Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Concertgebau Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.
Mikhail Pletnev is a member of the Council for Culture under the President of the Russian Federation.
He has received numerous awards, including State Prizes of the Russian Federation, Grammy and Triumph awards. Only in 2007 the musician was awarded the Prize of the President of the Russian Federation, the Order of Merit to the Fatherland of the III degree, the Order of Daniel of Moscow, granted by His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II. At the Bolshoi Theatre he made his debut with the production of the opera The Queen of Spades by P. Tchaikovsky (season 2007/08).
