The Smiths, a British rock band performing indie pop, post-punk, formed in Manchester in 1982. The Smiths, a British rock band performing indie pop, post-punk, formed in Manchester in 1982. The group includes vocalist and pianist Morrissey, multi-instrumentalist (solo and bass guitar, mandolin, harmonica) Johnny Marr, cellist and bass guitarist Andy Rourke, drummer and backing vocalist Mike Joyce.
The group's founders, Morrissey and Johnny Marr, met in late 1981. Soon the band began writing and recording songs called The Smiths. At the end of the year, drummer Mike Joyce and bassist Andy Rourke join the band. After several concerts in Manchester, the team goes to the capital.
At a recording studio in London, the team recorded their debut single “Hand in glove”, which hits the tops of the hit parade of local radio stations. After a while, “What difference does it make” and “This charming man” are released, and in the spring, “The Smiths” record and release the self-titled debut album “The Smiths”, the disc falls on the second position of Billboard TOP-100. In the same year, the group went on a European tour. In 1985, the album “Meat Is Murder” was released, which soon occupies the top of the UK charts.
In 1986, due to addiction to drugs, Andy Roark was fired from the team, Craig Gannon came to his place. In this composition, The Smiths are working on the recording of the third studio album “The Queen Is Dead”, in support of which they conduct a tour American tour, after which the collection is in the Billboard TOP-100. In the fall of 1986, Marr was involved in an accident, Gannon left the band, and Rourke returned to his place. Musicians are again accepted for studio work, but conflicts begin to break out in the team. Constant controversy leads to scandals, and in this environment, the band recorded the latest album “Strangeways, Here We Come”.
After the release of the album, Marr leaves the band, Morrissey announces the dissolution of the band and the beginning of a solo career. /
