The Kinks, a rock band from the UK, performing songs in the style of proto-punk, power-pop, rock opera, was founded in 1963 by the Davis brothers Ray and Dave. Originally called The Ravens, the band soon changed to The Kinks.
The Kinks' debut single is a cover version of Little Richard's Long Tall Sally. In the summer of 1964, the song "You Really Got Me" reached the top of the charts in the UK and the United States. It is “You Really Got Me” that leads to the weighting of rock music not only in the work of “The Kinks”, but also in the whole music, determining the birth of such musical styles as punk rock, hard rock, and subsequently heavy metal.
Since 1965, The Kinks have regularly toured in both the UK and the US, and have released many hit songs, such as "Tired of Waiting for You", "All Day and All of the Night", and others. In 1966, the band’s debut studio album, Face to Face, was released, and the song “Sunny Afternoon” brings greater fame to the band The Kinks. The following year, the song "Waterloo Sunset" appears. In 1969, the album “Arthur” was released. In 1970, the single "Lola" appeared, in which the band returned to a heavier sound.
Since 1973, The Kinks has slightly changed its creative direction - Ray Davis is taken for writing a rock opera. The debut is the rock opera Preservation, which is a variant of vaudeville, but its presentation failed. Despite this, Ray writes three more operas, which in the early 80s return the band to its former popularity. In 1983, the band recorded the single "Come Dancing". The second half of the 80s of the twentieth century and the beginning of the 90s are quite difficult: new compositions are not successful, quarrels and conflicts occur between the founders, and in 1996 the group "The Kinks" suspends activities, the musicians devote time to solo projects and personal life. And only in 2008, Ray Davis decides to resume the activities of the team, but without his brother, who refuses to participate, citing poor health. /
