Another classic with Adam Sandler, what can I say? Personally, such films cause only a slight smile of affection from childish adult humor and warm feelings from the simplicity of good morality. I don’t know what it takes to hate this movie. It is the most naive and funny, like a cheerful little child.
The directorial work is a mix of the most standard visual clichés characteristic of American comedies of the late nineties or early zeroes. And that's beautiful. Including such a tape, you have no doubt about what you will see. Everything will be very simple, but from this it is extremely clear. The director, Dennis Dugan, has already managed to make such a film as “Lucky Gilmore”, which is quite an indicative fact. Color correction, operator’s work and installation are generally very similar between the two paintings. Looking at one of the classics of Sandler, you can be sure of the quality of all the others, because the changes are as small as possible. In other words, nothing but the gold standard.
Acting is also expressed in the characteristic manner of Adam Sandler. Sometimes a little hysterical, ridiculous, but still funny, Adam is able to make you smile even with the most banal nonsense. So also Rob Schneider, as always, is on the pickup, which only adorns the picture. The comedy duo of the two is something akin to the American response to Pierre Rechard and Gerard Depardieu. Yes, the answer to the amateur, but nevertheless the tandem of actors works, which cannot but please.
The plot tells a simple story of fathers and children in a modern way. Lack of responsibility, resentment, desire to prove. Here the tying is rather needed to start a fireworks of jokes and incidents, and the development of characters leads only to the realization of obvious truths, which is then expressed in the correction and subsequent reconciliation of the conflicting parties. It is easy, but morality does not lose its value, but on the contrary, it wins at the expense of public accessibility.
Great movie. You need to be an incredible snob, so as not to appreciate the tape to its dignity or at least not to recognize a clear hit in the genre. Such a movie can be turned on at any time, even as an adult, to feel small.
The successful experience of cooperation between director Dennis Dugan and comedian Adam Sandler on the wonderful picture “Lucky Gilmore” bore fruit – the filmmakers’ duo subsequently repeatedly united on the set of various projects, delighting fans of a good comedy. The second film to feature both Dugan and Sandler was the hilarious Big Dad, released in 1999. The story of a charming slacker who unexpectedly discovered the qualities of a decent father belongs to the category of the best comedies in the career of Adam Sandler. "Big Dad" became not just a popular hit, but also surprisingly steadfastly proved itself at the box office, becoming one of the most profitable comedies of all time. In addition, Dugan’s film received several notable prizes, which the director has no longer won in recent years. By tradition, the cast of the comedy with Adam Sandler was replenished with his faithful comrades. Rob Schneider returned to work with him, this time receiving a much more extended role. Not without less famous, but nevertheless proven in the case of performers in the person of Alain Covert, Peter Dante and Jonathan Lougran, accompanying Sandler throughout the creative path.
So, the plot of the film revolves around a cute slacker Sunny Koufax (Sandler), who works as a tax collector on the toll freeway. the hero does not think about the future, does not think through a plan of action and does not guess what might happen to him tomorrow. Loved girl Sunny gets tired of the pathological uncertainty of the guy and leaves him in search of a more serious life partner. However, the hero does not worry about this at all, since he believes that he will be able to return it without any problems, because despite a carefree lifestyle not burdened with unnecessary deeds and thoughts, he has a sound mind, logical thinking and a hot heart. In order to return the beloved, Sunny needs to settle down and think about finally having a child. And such a case is presented to him. But don’t expect everything in Sunny’s life to be painfully trivial. Once in a rented apartment, a guy is delivered an interesting cargo - a five-year-old boy named Jordan (Cole and Dylan Sprouse). According to the notice, the child must remain in the care of Sunny’s neighbor, Kevin (Stuart), who recently went to a new job in far-flung China. The hero understands that this is his chance to prove himself from the best side, becoming a father for Jordan and thereby again winning the favor of the girl. However, the risky adventure turned into an amazing outcome for Sunny: he no longer thinks of himself without Jordan and is not ready to give him to someone else.
With rare exceptions, comedies with the participation of Adam Sandler, filmed in the 90s, are distinguished by a considerable amount of charming madness without excessive moralization. The audience came to the movies solely to laugh at the original humor that Sandler and his team supplied in unlimited quantities. Romantic "The Singer at the Wedding" was the first experiment of the comedian to change the image. No, he still did not hesitate to sprinkle sharp jokes, mocked others and periodically behaved like a disgusting person, but at the same time Sandler proved that sensual roles suit him. “Big Dad” is a natural continuation of this trend. Sunny Koufax, performed by Sandler, lives for her pleasure. He is alien to the thought of business, high offices and other benefits of society, although he is quite able to achieve a decent position. This is the most ordinary young man, struggling with problems without undue stress. If someone spilled coffee on the floor, the best remedy for dirt hero considers spread newspaper. This example shows how Sunny feels about life. He uses this approach to anything that might disappoint him. Nothing can really upset him, because he does not take anything to heart. With such a life position, Sunny could become a notorious scoundrel to whom it is impossible to imbue sympathy. Adam Sandler once again was able to make a potentially repulsive character a person with whom everyone would like to meet. Sunny Koufax will never leave a friend without help. His advice is appreciated by even the best lawyers in the city, and the hated ones are forced into tantrums because they can’t counter his disarming charm. New features he added the appearance of the baby Jordan, with whom the hero of the comedian formed an unforgettable tandem, in which both participants of an extraordinary experiment learn new truths.
What can happen to a child if he falls into the hands of a guy who lets him do anything? I think each of us as a child dreamed that parents were not just mentors, but also best friends. This is the method of education chosen by Sunny Koufax. As an adult, Sunny lets Jordan decide for himself what to do. To the credit of the main character, he does not slide the situation into outright absurdity. On the contrary, he gives the boy a choice as to what to do in a particular situation. Of course, such a method of education is controversial, because the child needs to be protected from the wrong choice, because he will not always be able to independently find the right morality. In "Big Dad" clearly shows what can lead to such a method of education. But on the other hand, we see that every mistake Sunny makes makes him wiser and he understands where he was right and where he was wrong. Along with him, Jordan learns, knowing the world thanks to an older friend.
It’s gratifying to know that Dennis Dugan, Adam Sandler and the company have focused on the psychology of communication with children, so that “Big Dad” looks not like an ode to a comic grotesque, but as a living story that can teach viewers something new. In the little things lies the dignity of the production, which sometimes is a manual communication with children. How do you get your child to open their mind? It gave him the opportunity to be invisible. That is when all the secrets are revealed, because you can not worry that you can be embarrassed. This and much more can be safely recorded in the dignity of the picture, making and laugh, and let a tear of tenderness at the same time.
In conclusion, I want to say that “Big Dad” refers to those comedies that cause exceptionally positive emotions. Dennis Dugan’s film won’t fade from memory because it was made with love. Adam Sandler looks quite organic in the role of a slacker who decides to change his life once and for all. The unexpected father in his performance pleases with each of his actions and sometimes catches himself thinking that the manner of behavior with children in some aspects should be taken from him.
9 out of 10
"Big Dad" is probably one of my favorite movies! I remember being given a cassette of this film for the day almost the year the film was released. I don't remember exactly, but I was very small and I've been scrubbing this tape ever since. Now rub the disc.
I don’t know why I loved this movie at the time. Probably all at once. From the first minutes, the film captures and adjusts to a good summer mood. It would seem that in “Big Dad” there is nothing out there, but for that there is some warmth or something mixed with good. This is a really good movie. Without the toilet humor that is full of modern comedies, with meaning and idea, which are again lacking in modern comedies. A very simple and easy to understand film, which does not fit any ratings and age restrictions. "Big Dad" can be watched at any age! Even after the hundredth viewing, there remains a good mood after watching and a sad residue that the story of Sunny Koufax and Julian is over. This is despite the fact that it is a comedy! In the film there are a couple of sad moments that can break into tears.
As for me, Adam Sandler played his best role in this film. At least, thanks to this film, I loved the work of Sandler. I don't know what else to write here. You did great! I will remember the image of Sunny Koufax for a long time. Of course, it is impossible not to note Julian performed by the twin brothers Cole and Dylan Sprouse. I was very surprised to learn that this boy was played by two children. This seven-year-old boy probably won the hearts of all the audience, and it is worth a lot. Bravo! I would like to highlight Rob Schneider. He got a small role, but what a role. I don't know how to explain it, but he clearly embellished the film with his role. And of course, Steve Buscemi in the form of a bum! For the sake of one shot, where he goes from a slide to a cart full of garbage and crashes into a pole, I'm ready to watch the movie forever. Appeared in the frame for a couple of minutes, and remembered on a par with the main characters.
In general, a film for all time, for any age category and for any company.
Sunny Koufax, whose age has exceeded 30 years, does not think about money and position in society.
All of his entourage, except for the food delivery man, his friend, have a serious legal practice, and Sunny Vanessa's girlfriend nags him about his lack of career aspirations. At the same time, our guy graduated from law school, and was adored by Vanessa in those times, which he obviously prefers the current ones. But Sunny is cheerful and cheerful, he is not interested in money at all, besides the taxi company, whose cab was hit by Sunny, paid him $200,000.
Father, Lenny Koufax, is contemptuous of Sunny's position as toll collector.
All he cares about is how to keep Vanessa, frustrated by his career aspirations.
So, the doorbell. On the doorstep is a five-year-old Julian with luggage and a note from his mother, which is addressed to a close friend of Sunny: Kevin Ghereti and contains a request to look after the boy.
If you’ve seen other Adam Sandler movies, you’ll notice that whoever Adam Sandler plays is still Adam Sandler, and Big Dad is no exception. This is the same attractively simple, cheerful guy who keeps making funny jokes: "My mom used to say that soda teeth spoil, but you still have them, right?" Speaks of eternal problems in simple language: “I have a father, but not normal.” All my life has been telling me what to do, instead of letting me decide for myself, which is why so many people grow up crazy. At first I wanted to be a model, but it turned out that I am not particularly handsome.
Adam Sandler gave me more than an hour of deep, positive emotions and did everything an actor can do for the audience. Seriously, not a single frame in the entire film without everyone’s favorite facial expressions and manner of speaking.
When writing a review, I looked at a thematic site for writers, directors. Most of these people received gold raspberries, meaning "worst execution," such as "worst scenario."
I am not aware of the prestige and objectivity of this award, but I am aware of my impressions. In the distant past, when a classmate gave me a cassette and introduced me to Adam Sandler for the first time, I was in awe of him. Rarely, when you watch movies from childhood, do you find them so cool? This is the case where I found it perhaps even more interesting than when I was in school.
The whole acting, the whole script contains a set of pleasant characters, they are pleasant to look at and enjoy listening to their dialogue. The doubles did a great job. If you and I communicated and treated each other like the characters of this film, we would meet in any situation with a good smile on our faces.
The soundtrack is perfect, each track in a particular situation is wonderfully suited to emotions, and is perfectly perceived against the background of the views of the metropolis. No wonder the film won the award for the soundtrack.
The movie is not long, looks in one breath, we are not left to watch from the sidelines for what is happening, which is not very interesting, and will be clear only after 5-10 minutes of “technical supervision”.
It was from this movie that I began my acquaintance with Adam Richard Sandler. Here you can see his ability to simultaneously play a dramatic and comic role, at a very high level, as it is done in the film Funny People.
A great actor, a great movie that is suitable for any kind of viewing, including family.
"Fathers are like children." Happy parenting techniques.
I think that even the most unhappy person in the world keeps a couple of happy memories from childhood. Let him be surrounded by complete darkness, dirt, poverty, hypocrisy and meanness of adults - still, even in completely catastrophic conditions, he could be light and cheerful, possessing a very formidable weapon - childlike spontaneity.
I. Heroes and story. Here in the main character of the film - Sunny Koufax, she is just present, although he is already over 30 years old. Moreover, he has so much that even long-time acquaintances and good friends are sometimes confused by his antics. So, being invited to a party with his best friend, he suddenly hears a friend publicly proposes to his girlfriend. Sunny, though, tries to joke about the seriousness of the moment, but still realizes that his manner of “leading himself-as a child” causes others to turn away from him and plunges him into increasingly lonely.
But, only about 10-15 first minutes are given to the presentation of the main character and his life collapse in the film, because most of the time is still devoted to real, cheerful, witty and very kind relations of “healthy demina”. Sunny, 32 years old and... a real little boy 5 years old.
Their carefree adventures are the main advantage of the film. All these pranks and fun look fantastically organic and funny against the background of an overbusy, ever-hurried metropolis. Sunny, teaching the boy various tricks and attractions as if he gets rid of them and... grows up. Ultimately, he becomes so attached to his pet that he is even ready to take on the role of his father, but... family ties must be interpreted according to the letter of the law.
The court scene accusing Sunny of illegally sheltering minors is heartbreaking. After getting to know all the details of the personal lives of the characters and imbued with deep sympathy for both, this trial looks the most unfair and absurd in the last 2,500 years! However, it allows us to understand that personal and social relationships are two completely different, contradictory things. Family ties run counter to government ties (there are many examples, especially in politics) and need much more attention and care than the latter. In the end, this is the message of the film, in which I did not find a single negative character (even the guardianship officers seem to want the best, but ...) - so lightweight, kind and unobtrusive.
II. Tech. Sandler's playing style is excellent. His character is like a climber hovering over the abyss between the world of “endless duties, roles, cliches, conventions” and “naive, childlike immediacy.” In my opinion, this is his most successful role in cooperation with director D. Dugan, who in turn had already successfully worked not only with Adam Sandler (lucky Gilmore), but also with preschool children (Difficult Child).
The original soundtrack is remembered almost better than the film itself. Every song is perfect, thank you Teddy Castelucci.
Big Dad is a lyrical comedy designed to remind us that although we are all proud of the fact that we “wipe our own ass,” we were perhaps the most cheerful, open and happy only when we did not even know how to do it.
It's a delightful movie. The viewing is full of emotions. Everything goes from laughter to tears.
The story of one father and his son touches. I, for example, love this baby, but it turned out that these are twins that I know from the series Zack and Cody.
This story tells about the adventures of a father and son. This is, I would say, a parental benefit. This soul-child therefore found a common language with the child, he still lives in this magical country called childhood. As an adult, he behaves like a child. That’s probably what my son trusted.
What I love about this film is the process of educating Adam Sandler. He gave the boy direct survival lessons. It was fun watching them drop banks in the store to lower the price. So great is the communication between them. This is the solution to the problem of fathers and children. The hero Sandler, apparently, had problems with his father and therefore he decides to raise children as he himself would like to be raised.
There's definitely no time to be homesick now. Funny idea with a friend who learns to read.
All the activities of the father and son are fun and touching. Sandler in the face of his character is attached to this boy. He finally finds his father.
This is especially true when the child talks about everything that happened to them. They found each other, son and father.
Before the production of "Big Dad" the director Dennis Dugan nicely worked with comedy films, he assigned the main task to the children, among them the famous in our country "Difficult Child" and the not so popular film "Parents", then he liked the talent Adam Sandler and in the film "Lucky Gilmourne" Dugan is engaged in the script Three years pass and again all of them, and Herlichy including, and also joined the collegium of screenwriters Steve Franks, shot a new witty and very touching comedy "Big Dad", where Dugan returns the child to the screens (true, the role of the baby Julian or as he called himself Frankstein was performed by two twin brothers) and shoots together and Adam Sandler
At that time (1999) there were a lot of kind and cheerful films about minor scoundrels and the more surprising how the viewer reacted to "Big Dad", because many called this film one of the best in its genre.
In fact, we have not yet seen before the year the premiere of such a vacillating slob as the hero Adam Sandler appeared before us (by the way, in this role you can see how the actor honed his image). He works once a week as a tax collector for cars, his girlfriend leaves him for his old grandfather, few people love and appreciate him, and his best friend is a food delivery man who can hardly read English. But everything changes when a nice boy appears on the doorstep, and by coincidence, Sunny (this is the name of the hero Sandler) has to take care of a five-year-old child.
The film came out as a selection of wonderfully played and cheerful scenes, and as you follow the development of the relationship between Frankenstein and Sunny, you begin to realize that next to the child, Sunny grows up, and the boy will sincerely love the new father, and he is his. This is touching and perceived subconsciously, we do not show it obtrusively, everything is covered with a veil of bright and intelligent comedy. "Big Dad" really makes you laugh or at least just smile, but not only is this picture, it also contains the philosophy of realizing that a person can change if the situation around him changes too.
I can’t forget until now the scene when Frankenstein was taken away from Sunny, and he shouted that he would no longer watch the Kangaroo song (by the way: in a kangaroo costume, the same Tim Herlihi starred), the unforgettable dialogue in court with Sunny and his father (the small but brilliant role of Joseph Bologna ) – it broke a tear, and the episodes with how Sunny taught the boy and his friend the peddler English and his funny dialogue with his partner – this is just a manifestation of his co-boy. Plus, I add that in this film absolutely no one causes antipathy, neither Christie Swanson (the one who left Sunny before the appearance of Frankenstein), nor the cold-blooded minister of the letter of the law in court, no, everything is very positive.
One of the best comedies in Adam Sandler with his impeccable comedian, but he also managed to show himself from the dramatic side. An amazingly good and positive picture.
