Inadequacy The notes of chaos are not in an instant lined up in harmony and acquire the power of art and what is called creativity. Broken glass does not always make a beautiful mosaic.
Before us are two scripts, Philip and Eric, sewn into the canvas as if a documentary-biographical video, where the minted voice behind the scenes - somewhere ironic, and where completely impartial - tells the story of the fall and rise of spirit, fate and character.
Shot on a knee (sorry, Joaquim Trier), the film says that creativity is like a load, like a shovel that has to work to get something out. And also that creativity (here you can substitute any ontologically any valuable category) is the way of the art of embodiment and the way of mastering this art. Less sensitive, but more tenacious and purposeful, Philip understands this and comes to the goal, Eric, who got hit by a car and who at this moment something clicked in his head, gets stuck in his biography, scrolls, literally, the best moment in his life (a trip to Paris and love there with a girl) and does not move anywhere. Life is not a reprise, but a whole theater.
That's right, but who knows who's happier, Eric, who found his love, who didn't give it up, or Philip, who clothed himself in solitude as a robe of giftedness. They must be both unhappy and both mad in their own way, because both have been hard-working. What's in the end? If nothing is clear with Eric, then the fate of Philip is clearly visible and reflected in the biography of Wall Aegil Dahl, who was the standard of literature for both. And his biography, as you know, ends with a black illuminated frame and suicide.
Everyone is given their own, you just need to learn to tell the truth in time - yourself, your friends, the world around you. Maybe then it will be possible not to fall under the car and under the barrel of a gun aimed at itself.
The two main characters were inseparable friends, but by the end of the story, their paths diverge, and how to know what exactly caused this. Creativity that does not tolerate unnecessary people and time, changing the essence of the personality, or just characters, different courses of movement. At what point did Philip cease to be interested in Eric and vice versa? Where did the reincarnation take place: when he stopped writing, when he couldn’t give up love, or when he gave up, or when he said he didn’t like Philip’s book?
The film is shot in the style of documentary investigation, we read dry facts as if from a dossier, and the court decision should be made by the viewer himself, based on his understanding of moral principles, someone may try on the experience of the guys and be more honest, and without honesty it will not be possible to realize even the most easily accessible dreams.
Here, for example, is the film itself... Faded like the blonde hair of a true Norwegian, not completely candid, with expressionless faces, with liquid, flimsy dialogues and with a clearly voiceover laughter, which was not in the script, but which was left, apparently, adding as – absent in fact – the immediate aestheticism of arthouse cinema. So it did not turn out, in my opinion, a complete and true embodiment of the author’s ideas, so to speak, smeared thoughts on the topic of art cuisine, so to speak, a film with a harsh northern character. But as they say, sapienti sat.
