There is a whole direction in art - to create spirit-lifting works. A striking example is the story of Jack London “Love of life”, which, you can say, set a trend that speaks for itself. In a world full of injustice, frequent failures, resentments and doubts, someone gives up, someone loses hope and strength, someone is disappointed and gives up. And life is the most valuable always and everywhere, no matter how banal it may sound. And the ability to find the strength to overcome everything that falls to your lot, to find inspiration for this is the value that great art can give.
In Hollywood cinema, bright followers of this trend in recent times have become: Gravity, Survivor, 127 hours and others. But for me personally, the best of this cohort is All is Lost. Because it's the most delicate metaphor. Because it tells about life in the context of metaphysics and the role of the individual in it. Because Robert Redford is brilliant. Because the film is masterfully directed. Because this almost wordless movie is able to keep the audience’s attention to the entire narrative. And because the sea... which is infinitely beautiful, unpredictable wayward, boundlessly powerful... like life and love itself. You just have to see it!
Preliminary it is necessary to say a few words about the creators of a largely experimental film-drama with elements of adventure and disaster ' Hope will not fade' American production under the auspices of independent small film studios ' and 'Washington Square Films' which premiered in 2013 in the out-of-competition program of the Cannes Film Festival.
Director-director was J.S. Chandor, who at the time of release ' Hope will not fade ' turned 40 years old, but he has already become a famous filmmaker in certain circles, when his debut film, business drama ' Limit of risk' (2011), according to his script, was shortlisted ' Oscar' At the same time ' Limit of risk' did not have a solid plot, but several major actors agreed to the shooting (Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci, Demi Moore and even Zachary Quinto with Simon Baker). And ' The Limit of Risk' began its march through the world film forums with the festival of independent cinema ' Sundance' perhaps the most prestigious festival in its niche. And the direct creator of 'Sundance' was Robert Redford, an untouchable personality in the world of cinema with untouchable authority, we can say that Redford is ' an icon of Hollywood' the level of Clint Eastwood himself. And it was at ' Sundance' there was a meeting of Redford and Chandor, after which the latter, inspired by the story of Ernest Hemingway ' The Old Man and the Sea', began to create his new picture.
And that is what it was ' Hope will not fade ' It all begins with a lonely wanderer writing a letter to his family on a yacht. The yacht is in distress after colliding with a metal container. The poor man alone tries to save the yacht and, in fact, himself from the depths of the seabed, but, nevertheless, despite all the efforts made, this is all more difficult and difficult. Almost before us appears drama in the mode of instruction ' Method of rescue on the water after a shipwreck' And at first it may seem strange that you can tell us in the film, the timing of which is more than an hour and a half, but Chandor clearly with all the care and detail approached the creation ' Hope will not fade' Of course, experienced sailors and other sailors can challenge some episodes, noticing some technical inaccuracies, but let’s not forget that this is a film, which means it has the right to fiction to win the audience’s attention.
And here it should be noted that ' Hope will not fade ' - this is conventionally called ' One-Actor Theatre' that is, we will not see anyone except the lead actor Robert Redford. And the number of replicas will be limited. There will be no monologue basis, which allowed you to survive and not go crazy hero Tom Hanks in the classic film about modern ' Robinson' ' Rogue' (2000). And let’s not forget that this world-famous picture of Steven Spielberg, in addition to a creative loophole, had a strong commercial foundation, but a low-budget & #39; Hope will not fade & #39; was created taking into account other views of its authors. And Redford, uttering a few swear words, his silence earned several awards and nominations and went in the favorites of the race for ' Oscar' but for unknown reasons never made the final shortlist. And if someone does not understand why Redford is called one of the most outstanding actors for the entire existence of cinema, then it is worth seeing ' Hope Will Not Extinguish' where one actor almost wordlessly evokes a whole range of emotions: from sympathy to respect.
And, of course, I must say again about the technical nuances of the production ' Hope will not fade '. Those who are unfamiliar with the sea, who are not pulled by the vast expanses of the world's oceans, who do not dream of going on a yacht cruise to the blow of warm winds, & #39; Hope will not fade & #39; quite rightly can become an expressive spectacle where each scene deserves special attention, because it is about survival, about the experience of a lonely yachtsman, desperately fighting for his life and under no circumstances is going to give up. And the camera tandem of Italian-Americans Peter Zuccarini and Frank J. DeMarco allows you to feel every scene, paying tribute to its realism. In addition, if the words in ' Hope will not fade ' practically no, then something should fill the airwaves and the composer of the film Alex Ebert coped perfectly with this, for which he received the deserved ' Golden Globe'. And I was pleasantly surprised by the installation of the tape. And he was surprised by the fact that ' Hope will not fade' was shot for only $ 9 million, and we got a more sincere, courageous, soulful film than the typical commercial projects have not had for a long time.
The direction of films in which the action is fully unfolded in a chamber setting and with one actor in the frame has been gaining popularity in recent years. However, such a complex specificity requires directors to be able to create a qualitative intrigue by minimal means, which will keep the viewer in suspense and will not let you get bored while watching. The young American director and screenwriter JC Chandor, for whom this work was the second in his career, managed to find the right balance and shoot a truly exciting film with one single actor in the frame. The tape received the warmest reception and was successfully at the box office.
Before us is a mixture of adventure drama and a thriller about survival in the wild. The main source of inspiration for the creation of the film was the cult story of the classic of world literature Ernest Hemingway "The Old Man and the Sea", as well as the habitat in which the author of the film lived. At the center of the story is a simple man making a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean on his yacht. However, the romance of sea travel changes dramatically and now the main character is forced to fight for his own life.
Immediately it is necessary to note the peculiarity of the tape. Almost complete absence of speech, the main character only occasionally throws phrases into the void, chamber atmosphere and absolute minimalism of the artistic form. We are offered to be on par with the hero in the conditions of a slowly going to the bottom of a sea yacht. Of course, it is possible to sum up philosophical symbolism and existential questions under the film, but I think that the author did not put complex meaning into his work. This is a dry movie about survival in conditions of realism, without complex background.
The atmosphere of the film captures and contributes to the audience’s immersion in the abyss of events. The story captures and does not let go until the end. It's a very good sound job here. Some episodes are accompanied by the silence and sounds of the sea, while others are a subtle musical track that conveys the mood of the film. You can make claims to the decoupling of the tape, as well as to some delay, the action sags at times. However, these shortcomings can not spoil the viewing experience.
77-year-old veteran of world cinema Robert Redford played one of the best roles in his career. It is his game that keeps the audience’s attention and does not allow you to get bored. We don't know anything about his hero. Who is he, where is he from, and what is his past? These questions don't matter. There is only He and the boundless ocean, the confrontation of man and the natural elements.
This is a small atmospheric movie, which is an adventure thriller about survival. However, it is also an existential drama about the value of human life on the one hand and the insignificance of human beings before the forces of nature. The picture is the author’s idea, but designed for absolutely any viewer. If you are a fan of the acting talent of Robert Redford, then the film is unambiguous to watch.

Over time, the shell of our soul becomes so rough that only some extreme events on the edges of life and death allow us to return to our true meaning and purpose.
I confess that the film was not so simple and obvious to me. Watched it three times. And I write a review after internally digesting it. The film leaves more questions than answers. It is undervalued by many, not fully understood.
Since the film is almost completely absent monologues (it shoots only one actor), all attention goes to the visual range. Some even considered the film something like a survival manual and began to count technical flaws and analyze the main character for professionalism. - That's not the movie! The film is not even about being steadfast and worthily holding the blows of fate! Nothing like that! This has nothing to do with it!
Why does no one ask the question why the hero in old age, on an old, albeit large, but unprepared yacht, not at all a professional, immovable by some thrills or a thirst for adventure, is left alone in the middle of the ocean?
Answer: this is an allegory of the state of his soul - a hero, it is clear that not the last person who has achieved a good position in society, is tired of routine, devastated, and seeks solace in loneliness, he has come to the end of life, to a point where meaning is lost. From the hustle and bustle of the world, he returns to the origins, to the starting point, to the comprehension of true values. But it doesn't come immediately. And here the director at the very beginning of the picture makes a flash forward. It shows the conclusion, does not even show, but voices, against the background of the main cause in the chain of causal relationships, which will lead to this conclusion through the trials of an unprepared old man. The conclusion that he will leave with a message in a bottle thrown overboard is like despair, like a cry into the void that he lived the wrong way and realized it and cannot share it with his closest ones. Everything's gone, everything's gone! - That's where the real name comes from! Passive, sustained, accepted by many for courage and perseverance, the behavior of the hero at the beginning of the picture tells us the same thing, he is not fighting for survival, he essentially does not care, he just does what he thinks a person should do in a similar situation. Hence the scene with a shave on a sinking boat - the hero is ready to die, it does not scare him. But, through further trials, he comes to meaning and true purpose, he realizes the main thing in his life. Perhaps he was looking for it in himself, but it turned out that he had to look for it in others. Realizing this, he despairs, he does not fight, in the final out of despair even sets fire to his raft.
But life gives him another chance, perhaps the last, but the most beautiful of his life! A chance to fix it.
I see the blue of the water and the glare of the sun on the waves,
As the wind beats the hair mercilessly,
As salt becomes common on the lips,
And the ocean calls to surrender irrevocably.
Sometimes being alone is so unbearable... easy. Swim through the sea expanses of life, drifting by the will of waves and wind. But the calm is not eternal... And no matter how unexpected or unpredictable the turn of events rewarded you fate, you can always find your inner compass - the inner meaning of what is happening to you.
Looking at the features of the hero’s face, I find traces of former beauty and strong character. I don’t know who he is or what his name is, why he went on a sea voyage, or why he got lost in the Indian Ocean. Apart from the monologue at the beginning of the film, a couple of words when trying to contact the coast guard on the radio, as well as a one-time masturbation, it is a silent film, devoid of history. “It is not customary to talk at sea without special need.” For the hero say splashes of water and gusts of wind, rustle slamming in the wind sail and creaking the hull of the yacht, and whispering running thales and scat. And the original musical accompaniment of Alex Ebert becomes almost a separate character of this story.
The low-budget film by J.C. Chandor, with a single role played by Robert Redford, focuses on the theme of human survival in extreme conditions. The share of a lonely old man was tested to compete with the power of the sea element, and the viewer's share - to watch for more than an hour and a half, as the hero fearlessly wins his life off the ocean.
Calmness, steely endurance, bordering on infallibility, the dimensionality of the hero’s actions are set in opposition to the treacherously insidious and changeable ocean in its mood. "Be calm and strong, old man," he said to himself. It is clear that he is not a newcomer to maritime affairs. In moments of impending storm the old man is calm and reasonable. There are no signs of panic or fear, only restrained emotions and glimmers of hope. "It's stupid to lose hope," he thought. It also seems to be a sin.
What idea does the director convey with his film? That the true purpose of your journey is not a place on the map? What is the special achievement of man in the ability to bear the blows of fate and overcome incipient despair? Does a person need an answer to the question why he lives? The harder it is to survive, the more he needs that answer. "Don't think, old man," he said out loud. Swim in the wind and meet trouble when it comes.
Despite the uniqueness of the project and the “incredible acting work of Redford”, even hint at which film it is mediocre, All Is Lost did not cause me much enthusiasm. Partly because the title of the film, translated exactly the opposite for the Russian box office as “Hope will not fade away”, already sets the directive for the predetermined finale. Plus a decent timekeeping for a chamber picture: if I was distracted from viewing a couple of times, without pressing the pause, then this in no way affected the understanding of what is happening on the screen.
Inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Old Man and the Sea, J.C. Chandor created a story in which the main protagonist is not only the old man, but also the Ocean itself. However, neither the sight of an impending storm, nor the waves covering the life raft, nor the floating schools of fish or a hungry pack of sharks can cause a storm of emotions in the hungry to the impressions or special effects of the audience.
The miserly visual series and the eventuality reduced to a minimum equate the film to J.K. Xi Chandor to the manual on survival on the high seas, poorly decorated with pictures, but supplemented by arguments between the term on a philosophical topic about the meaning of life.
But such minimalism of the picture, in the presence of good camera work, allows you to focus as much as possible on the actor’s play, which, in fact, as a result, we get a story about courage and loneliness in confrontation with ruthless fate.
"Nothing is repeated twice."
The text of the review contains quotes from the novel by E. Hemingway “The Old Man and the Sea”
Another great film about the ocean, the boat and the lone sailor. The film is made so skillfully and in detail, shot chicly and played by an inimitable actor and director Robert Redford. “Hope Will Not Extinguish” is an inspiring poster and title.
In the film, we do not hear human speech, but only listen to the sea, the splash of waves, a floating boat, the cries of birds, the crackling of a mast swinging in the wind, the clapping of a sail, steps on the deck, the sound of a radio, frequent breathing. We feel the warmth of the sun-heated deck, the heat of the sun’s rays, we see the transparency of salt water and hear the gusts of quiet or stormy wind, rain. If you like to listen to all this and watch it endlessly, you will not be bored in this entertaining film. Because by chance, our sailor is left alone in the ocean. He will have to experience real loneliness, left without fresh water, food supplies for many hours. He will always have to figure out how to survive. I admire the accuracy and practicality of the hero, his ability to calculate his actions, foresight - they are above all praise. Pay attention to this.
The world is not just the way it is. He's the way we understand him, isn't he? And when you understand something, you bring something into it, right? Does not life itself become a story? The adventure is dangerous and very exciting. Will the hero cope with the tests? Great, if not the best of Robert Redford’s roles. Bravo!
Involved in earthly passions,
I know that from darkness to light.
One day there will be a black angel.
And he will cry out that there is no salvation.
But unassuming and unassuming,
It is as beautiful as good news.
followed by a white angel
He says that there is hope.

Most ordinary people, hearing the news of a bad event, can be horrified and sympathize with those who had to go through it. However, most often we abstract from the idea that in a similar situation can be any of us, believing that this happens only to other people. But life can never be known in advance, because at any moment anything can happen, and it is important not to lose your temper, just as the main character of the action-packed drama “Hope Will Not Extinguish.”
Synopsis An elderly man travels alone in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Nothing foreshadows trouble. But by coincidence, the yacht encounters a drifting container, resulting in a hole in the ship. The situation is aggravated by the approaching storm, forcing the man to leave the yacht, moving to the life raft. From now on, he will have to rely on his skills and will to live, looking for a way to salvation.
Since Hope Will Not Extinguish is a chamber movie, we can only appreciate Robert Redford’s acting here. We don’t know his name or his past. We can only see that he travels alone on the ocean of his own volition and, to his surprise, is forced to fight for survival. Robert Redford with skill managed to convey the strength of the spirit of this character, who, despite the constant pursuit of his bad luck, does not give up and until the last moment makes every effort to survive.
The author of script and director JC Chandor approached the film with great responsibility. It is worth noting at once that “Hope will not fade” should not be compared with “Life of Pi”, because with the similarity of outlines, the films have different content. The film begins with a collision with a container. The main character manages to close the hole, but a new attack is approaching - a storm. This test becomes critical for the ship, as the hero has to move into a lifeboat, and here, only relying on luck, hope that someone will find him. The director made the film in the style of a psychological thriller, but here you feel not so much fear as sympathy for the main character, who again and again and again has to face injustice in the form of a hole, a storm and, finally, an unexpected lack of drinking water. The tension increases with every minute, and you and the hero cease to believe in hope.
Result Despite its intimacy, wordlessness and devoid of plot twists, “Hope will not fade” deservedly can be called a very good and worth watching picture. The film makes the viewer with a sinking heart to watch until the last minutes, whether the hero will survive, whether everything is lost for him or still there is hope.

I hoped to see at least in the Russian-speaking community a deep understanding of the film, but here I met only a strikingly superficial perception and an absolute inability to recognize allegories and metaphors in the visual text.
The film is great because it is not about sailors and not about fighting the elements or yourself. This film is a Christian allegorical tale of a life in which we are all shipwrecked lone travelers. Yes, there are few pleasures here, but calm, unfortunately, is always replaced by a storm, after which, fortunately, the sun always appears. And even when others pass by, when everyone is indifferent to the plea for help, when it seems that all is lost, we must believe that in the end salvation awaits us.
That is why there is no backstory and no epilogue. It doesn’t matter who the hero was or who gave him a helping hand. That is why the author neglects the detailing and compliance with safety rules on ships. Because in life, not everyone has a life jacket. Because it doesn't matter. Because life is an ocean. Because you always have to fight and hope that the sun will come out from behind the clouds.
The script for this film is 32 pages long. Remarks of the main character took several lines.
Of all the films played in one actor, this one has impressed me the most. Of course, there were still "127 hours"Boyle, but there is a background and postscript, flashbacks. Here we do not know anything (and until the very end will not know) about the hero.
With the translation of the name for the Russian rental, a paradox occurred. The expression "hope will not fade away" both in itself and in the context of content means the exact opposite of the original "all is lost". However, this duality as accurately as possible separates those viewers who think that he saw a good chamber film-disaster from those who saw in it a parable about the loneliness of modern man.
What is certainly amazing is the work of the 77-year-old Radford, who keeps the entire film on himself, performing simple and understandable actions without slapping his face and not breaking into emotions. In the face of the death of his hero, instructions, intuition, instinct lead - everything as it would be in real life.
But here is what is surprising - a container with Chinese sneakers makes a hole in the board of an expensive yacht in the middle of the Indian ocean, but for some reason the American romantic of the XIX century Hawthorne is recalled: "In the seeming chaos of our mysterious world, every person is embedded in a system with such amazing accuracy - the systems are adjusted to each other and to the whole - that an individual who only for a moment strays away is at a terrible risk of losing his place forever."
The purifying power of the film is that only the finale suddenly reveals to the viewer the truth that comes to the hero on the very edge. In the end, it is up to you whether you are waiting for a rescuer or a savior. By faith and recompense.
Unlike the turbulent emotions of the heroes of the paintings Buried Alive and 127 Hours, an old man struggling with the elements in the open ocean, even whose name we do not know, will show real theatrical emotions only once, remembering someone’s mother. The plot of the picture is as defused, uncaused and investigated as possible - it is unclear how the hero got here, where he kept his way and what motivates him to fight for life. Only a letter written in a period of desperation makes it clear that the hero has relatives from whom he asks for forgiveness.
It is difficult to judge a person far from yachts and everything related to them, how much the hero is a trained yachtsman, whether he did certain things correctly and whether such a person could be in the open ocean at all. Moreover, and I think psychologists will support me, being alone for a long time, and even when there is a solid blue around, sometimes rebelling with storms, it is almost impossible to maintain concentration, reason and generally manage not to go crazy and commit suicide at least in the simplest way, simply stopping fighting for life. Therefore, let’s leave the topic of holes in the script and reasonableness of the hero’s behavior, especially since I thought the behavior of the hero was quite adequate, given the circumstances. At least he fought honestly for life, let someone say and not skillfully.
Robert Radford, as the only actor, simply does not let the viewer look away from him. He does not overplay, giving out unnecessary emotions to anyone and making himself thus an unnatural puppet, controlled by the puppeteer on the other side of the camera. The actor here is self-sufficient and independent, this is his benefit. The hero is not a frightened child or a sentimental woman to cry, he also has no problems with the psyche, to scream and arrange tantrums after each failure, which is here a car and a small cart, and there is no time for emotions at all, because the elements and the desire to survive regularly throw the job.
The author deliberately simplified the picture as much as possible in emotional and plot plans, without providing us with any background, no global motivational excesses, no full-fledged denouement, and even deprived us of dialogues, monologues or at least some voice behind the scenes. A simple and hopeless struggle for life in the elements that cover 70% of the Earth. “May it all burn with fire” – as if the hero of the picture says in the last shots, and as in the stories of people who have been between life and death, he sees a glowing circle, not one, but two. But which title is better suited for the film "All is lost" or "Hope will not fade" - decide for yourself after watching.

“Hope will not fade away” is a kind of unique movie. From the description, the viewer can learn that only one person starred here, the screenwriter is also represented in one person - this is undoubtedly cool, because you need to try very hard to make such a film interesting and exciting. At the same time, the uniqueness of the picture with Robert Redford lies in the fact that it joined a series of films where either the action unfolds in a limited space (and the movie does not lose its attractiveness), or the picture is essentially a theater of one actor, but remains extremely exciting and intriguing (as an example, “Burried Alive” with Ryan Reynolds pops up in memory).
JC Chandor's film is a modernized story of Robinson Crusoe, with the only difference that the time span described here is not stretched for years as with the famous traveler Daniel Dafoe. This is a story of survival where even the most enduring person cannot cope alone, but thanks to emotional and volitional qualities and the desire to see those who remained on the shore, you can do something beyond the control of your own body. The hero of Redford, who has no name (the viewer knows him as Our Man - literally - Our man) is fighting the elements, trying to cope with the mad mother nature and get out of the ocean hell in which he was completely alone, with almost no chance of surviving.
The film may seem a little boring, because the frame is constantly visible only one character, and the picture is not teeming with variety. However, in “Hope Will Not Extinguish” it is primarily interesting to look at the struggle between Man and Nature, how Man will act when he finds himself in an extreme situation. In addition, it is quite possible to put yourself in the place of “Our Man” by reflecting on the topic “How I would behave in this case” – whether I panicked and plunged into the oceanic abyss without resistance, whether I fought for life with all truths and untruths.
Plus, this film is filled with bright colors, which are rich in the world around us and the ocean in particular. From azure serene to diabolical-dark, from calm to raging ...
But look at you. I do not impose my opinion on anyone.
An interesting film about a man in difficult circumstances that reveal himself to a man.
The announcement of the film on this site takes away from reality. The yacht is far from luxurious. The hero of the film is an ordinary, and not a kind of superman, as it may seem from the announcement, shows himself to be an experienced sailor, skillfully and easily copes with a yacht, courageously overcomes any difficulties, finds non-standard solutions, shows ingenuity. But in one episode I was waiting, but the hero never took the lifeline from the sinking yacht. It’s a very crazy twist of the script, given that the hero’s goal was to survive and do everything possible. Yes, in the middle of the ocean among marine life, it would briefly prolong his life, but it would prolong the same!
It was strange to hope that on the sea route, where there are giant ships, even if the hero was noticed, they would take some action.
As always, Russian distributors gave the film a title that does not correspond to reality. Until he opened Kinopoisk and saw the real name of the film - All Is Lost (" Everything is lost), some controversial moments in the script did not fall into place, especially at the very end of the film, where the hero behaves far from in accordance with the title of the film in the Russian box office (" Hope will not fade). The feeling of deception did not leave, but this, as it turned out, was not the fault of the authors of the film.
This is a good movie that keeps your attention to the last. The sluggishness of the hero does not affect the attention to the action, the documentary film only increases interest in what is happening on the screen. It would be interesting to watch the movie later.
Instead of entrenching himself in a stormy way, finishing the hatches all, does he ... shave? sailor? shave? I am already silent about the fact that the old-fashioned man alone leaned into the boundless Akiyan at this age on a leaky sailing trough, not knowing the sea navigation of the stars.
To sleep, barely walk you can afford only in complete calm on the yacht. The floating anchor is thrown out in advance, you need to steer on the correct galley, so as not to flip, sails, all gear, all dishes, all hatches - everything is laid and fastened in a storm way long before everything.
The most epic - to shuffle so babushka, so as not to have time to put your hands in front of your face! Friends, this is a natural reflex. What kind of skill do you have to have? Yes, I have met him occasionally only in some people of the Western world. I suspect they were molested by the possibility of getting insurance for any sneeze.
All the disturbing equipment a self-respecting owner of the yacht would personally try on himself and more than once. In general, according to the IMP, the vests contain a whistle, so as not to grunt the container ships “Aw!, I’m here!”. Signal mirrors, smoke bombs are floating, canisters with water are made sealed, on rafts the roof is of a special design so that it collects water, and not rubbish.
Of course, on the sea, even with all the responsible approach to the matter, miracles are constantly happening on turns ... but personally I would be more interested in watching him fight the 20 meter waves fully armed than how he sinks in a puddle.
Sailors have a belief that failures are not accidental, but are attracted by the person himself if his behavior is wrong, karma, etc. So it was extremely difficult for me to empathize with him, even with all his unsuccessful, seemingly random coincidences. But the film itself is green as survivalistic, partly mystical and philosophical.
It is noteworthy that sometimes Vladimir Eremin is also indicated in the actors. They say it's his hand at the end.
For the sake of filming, 3 real yachts of 1978 were sunk: Tahoe, Tenashes and Orion.
Probably, there is nothing more ridiculous than sailing on a yacht on a vast ocean, where in any direction you look - to the very horizon of the wave, and suddenly run into a container that fell from a merchant ship in the middle of the night. It's so unfortunate that all electronics and radio go to hell. Well, the hole - be healthy, of course. If you consider that you are alone on a yacht, and you are far over 70, then the prospects are not rosy.
“Hope will not fade” directed by Jay C. Chandor, shot according to his own script, this is a one-of-a-kind feature film of one character – from the first to the last frame. It can not even be called a monologue, since the only character in the picture in the virtuoso performance of Robert Redford, a person is extremely verbose and not prone to affectation. Anyone else in his place would remember all the expressions of the vocabulary of profanity - from cover to cover. And he for the whole hundred-minute film will say no more than a dozen words (except for the voiceover text before the beginning of the tape).
Any film about the confrontation of man with the elements, with the vastness and ruthlessness of space, ocean or desert – even if the director does not directly think about it, will be saturated for the viewer with symbolic overtones. But when you look at this picture, you least think about some abstract concepts, you just can’t break away from it – you sit, grasping your heart, and wait for how it all ends, because trouble, as usual, does not come alone, and troubles inexorably thicken around the hero, and Redford even with the movement of his eyes can say more than Matt Damon in The Martian in a long monologue (by the way, the “Martian” itself looks like a lightweight film adaptation of the comic). With each minute, the viewer understands more clearly not only how much the hero’s chances of survival have deteriorated, but also how much harder and harder it is for him to keep hope in himself, how his spirit sinks, his strength is extinguished, physical form is lost.
The viewer will never know what kind of man is the character of Redford, why he was in the sea all alone, what reasons motivated him to leave loved ones and the benefits of civilization. He is rich or has accumulated for a long life funds invested entirely in this yacht. Does he have a wife, children, grandchildren? But what is in the film is necessary and enough to understand: this man is able to behave with dignity in the most difficult circumstances of life, and he knows how to fight for life as few are given.
“Hope will not fade” is a unique and life-affirming film that keeps in suspense until the last frame. I highly recommend it.
A couple of years ago, there was such fun among directors as long, wordless scenes. The Coen brothers had a silent set-up with a hunter who wandered into a place where old people do not belong, "Oil!" opened with an episode with the appearance of the devil Plainview from the ground on some wasteland, where there is no one to talk to. Now we have the whole movie as one big wordless scene.
“Hope will not fade” – a movie according to a 32-page script, with one paragraph of text and one loud curse; a movie in which director Chandor put everything on a synopsis allowable entertainment and old acting school.
What JC Chandor is more interested in is a good question.
It is unknown what miracle in this chamber story is the space in the picture, which allows you not to follow our man (the designation for the character used in the script), but to watch him from the sidelines. Hence, the hypnotic scene with the coup of the yacht, and the underwater world with its surprises. However, Chandor does not want to stop, which is why in some places he goes too spectacular, giving incredible views of our man against the background of a storm or sunset, which clearly painfully gives the realism of the picture, its main accent.
Robert Redford is a legend in his lifetime, an actor with serious filmography, carefully protecting her from bad taste (hello, De Niro!), so “Hope Will Not Extinguish” is a worthy project of his. He plays on halftones, revealing us a holistic character, although devoid of any backstory and, in fact, voice. The paradox is that it is the understatement that makes this hero alive - we do not need to believe in some fictional screen story of life, we were presented with bare facts when our man is a set of habits, these are actions that you observe during the session, and nothing else. And the more questions these actions cause, the more lively the character, because he adheres to his own independent logic.
And yet Redford is not enough in the film, as strange as it sounds when he is the only actor in the frame for all 106 minutes of timing. A movie that was supposed to be a story about a man, in fact, about the elements. Our man doesn’t get as much attention from the director as a wrecked yacht and the endless ocean around it.
Hope will not fade away: Life of Pi without a tiger, Gravity beyond space, and Captain Phillips on the other side of the Maersk container ship.
The film is chamber property, even though the action takes place on the ocean expanses. Such an atmosphere is created by the absence of any plot, the viewer will be shown the story of a person’s survival in an extreme situation and for what reasons he will hang out there alone and even as his name, the viewer is not destined to learn that, in principle, it becomes not even interesting, after understanding that there is a battle for life, one on one, not just with the elements, but with death itself.
To begin with, if you do not like the film from the first minutes, then you can safely end the viewing, the picture will not present any surprises and the action will be persistently monotonous, even the deadly danger will look very everyday, without any Hollywood raid, such art-house survival.
The film of one actor and the choice of such clearly did not go wrong. Not only is Redford still in good physical shape, which allows the viewer to assume the idea of survival against all odds, but his well-known acting talent is easily able to pull the film alone, which he once again demonstrates.
The film will be recommended for viewing, this is a good survival story, without unnecessary computer tricks and dramatization, only the desire to live, the ability to survive, self-control and patience and faith, all this is very, very lacking in our everyday life, this picture will be generously shared, it remains only to sit down at the screen.
I wish everyone a pleasant viewing!
I heard a lot of praise about this film from friends and acquaintances, and now I am finally writing this review. First damn negative. In order, though. Let's start with the merits of the tape.
Plus
+ Sound. He's really good. The matter is not even in the talentedly written soundtrack, but in the sound environment: wind, waves, creaking shacks and so on sounds very tasty.
+ With some stretch you can write in the pluses and visual series. Delusional, but to some extent the eye pleases.
That’s all, really.
Minuses
- The main and main disadvantage, spoiling all the pleasure of viewing is the complete cretinism of the main character! I haven’t seen so many stupid things in a long time. Hell, the hero never wore a life jacket during the storm (and he wasn't there alone). This is the first thing to do!
He also made such unforgivable mistakes as tying the raft to the leers in a storm, and then overnight on a raft tied to a sinking yacht!
Many actions show that a person in life did not go on a yacht. Winches? No, I'm sipping grotto-shocks. Action? Why try to start it, so what if the batteries are working? The boat is all in the water, save things? Time to shave! Big storm? I'm gonna go downstairs, sit on the couch instead of steering the boat! I'm not going to close the hatches.
This list can go on indefinitely.
- Rough blunders from the script and the crew. Firstly, the storm, a couple of times shown in the film - it's a calm! 1-2 meter waves are great weather! I will never believe that such a ripple will turn a 45-foot (downside) yacht.
Secondly, an overkill (upside down) followed by a reversal back with raised sails is practically impossible.
Thirdly, what a bald Merlin yacht, miraculously survived the storm, decided to suddenly sink after visiting her hero. To be honest, laminated yachts can not sink at all, they have a priori buoyancy positive!
Frankly, I am tired of remembering and listing such blunders as the above. The bottom line is that there are many of them and they completely spoil the impression of viewing.
And even acting does not save the situation, because the hero’s face is stone, and he said for the whole film in the frame two words: “Your mother.”
Films of such subjects should pursue at least one of the goals (and preferably both): either show the strength of the human spirit, its steadfastness in the fight against the elements and loneliness; or teach the viewer how to act in a critical situation, how to save his life from the deadly blows of fate. The film failed to accomplish any of these tasks. With acting and empathy for the hero, there are problems, and this tape can teach one thing: you can not let such idiots into the sea.
In general, such paintings, in which only one actor participates, are a complex experiment, but very interesting. Here, for colleagues - assistants do not hide. And with expensive special effects, you can't cover up the stains.
In fact, “Hope Will Not Extinguish” refers to solo works, where the main (and only) character will fight for life throughout the film. In the case of Buried Alive, Reynolds had a difficult mission. To make the viewer experience and sympathize as much as possible, hope and believe. In this tape, the cramped coffin was replaced by an endless expanse of water, and to fight for survival, will be a good actor Robert Redford. It starts with a hole and ends in an inflatable lifeboat. You will know for yourself when you look. I must say right away, the movie has some stamps in its performance. But they are, in principle, insignificant and do not catch the eye. Here, perhaps, the factor of the audience plays a role. Who, perhaps, such a “theater” of one actor, will not like. But, for me, gradually, the movie dragged on. And how it won't last. The further, the worse for the hero. And that makes it more intense. And Redford did a good job. Convincingly and diligently drawn the role. By the way, for the whole film, from his mouth, only a couple will sound - three phrases. It didn't upset me. Much more correct, when the hero saves strength and nerves, looking for a way out of the situation, and not shouting in hysteria half the film. The operator, in this case, showed a positive side. Picked up the right angles and plans. A nice addition, for me, was quite atmospheric soundtrack. I can’t say that it is perfect (some – where, lacked emotionality in the compositions), but succeeded, in general.
At the end of the day, the movie is special. For those who are interested in this kind of topic, as well as everyone, for a change, I recommend taking time. A little motivation, a frightening hopelessness and empathy probably won't hurt anyone. As a gift, it's not a bad ending. Let each of us have hope in our hearts. That's the end of it. I'm going to overestimate it a bit.
The so-called “one-man cinema” is already a frequent phenomenon in cinema. When watching such films, the main emphasis is on the emotional component and acting out the role, because almost all screen time is given to one person. The plot rarely keeps the viewer at the screen - such is usually only for the sake of the finale. After watching 127 Hours, Buried Alive and The Victim, I was looking forward to seeing this movie. I love watching the trailer for the upcoming movie, and I also have a habit of imagining what’s going to happen outside of those two and a half minutes that I haven’t seen yet. In this film, these two and a half minutes managed to stretch for a little more than an hour and a half, without adding anything new and interesting. It's a really boring movie, devoid of emotion. A film that does not hold the screen at all, and the main character does not cause any sympathy or concern for his fate. I confess that my expectations from this picture were heated by the trailer itself, stuffed with all sorts of epithets from publications unknown to me. I was waiting for the emotions, the struggle for life. You have no emotions, no struggles. The hero struggles with the elements, but does not try to survive as a person. He doesn't care about his future, he doesn't want to survive, he doesn't want to die.
I am angry and angry again, once again stumbling upon a publicized trailer and unfulfilled expectations. Hope on reasoned criticism of third-party foreign publications faded.
Man, ocean, loneliness, despair and the struggle for life.
Before I started watching, I was very skeptical. You see, I knew that this movie was based on one actor and it wasn’t a figure of speech he was really all alone and apart from him, the yacht, the boat and the ocean, there was no one and nothing in the whole movie. In general, I love these stories, there is nothing superfluous or distracting in them, it allows you to concentrate on the main thing, to understand the essence of what is happening, but there was only one problem, I was never a fan of Robert Redfort and for this I vaguely believed that a film focused on this actor might like me. However, the award season began and this film increasingly began to surface among the nominees of various awards, and the criticism was impressive. I still decided to watch it, and as it turned out, it was in vain that I did not do it earlier.
This film is very strange, it has no background. The viewer does not explain why not a young man, on a not the newest yacht, sailed alone into the open ocean. The public does not even see the beginning of this illogical journey. We are not shown how he was going to go, nor even how he sailed from the shore. We just see a man drifting alone across the ocean on his tiny yacht. The only thing we know about his past is that he feels guilty. This is obvious from the letter that sounds at the very beginning of the picture and, by the way, the text of this letter is almost all the words that sound in the film.
It seemed to me that I would be bothered by the lack of words and the silence disturbed only by the sounds of the ocean or the fact that I did not bother to explain the motives that drive the main character, but it turned out that everything is completely different. Silence in this film, by the way, it emphasizes the loneliness of the protagonist. This loneliness is not only external, which consists in the fact that around no soul, the strongest loneliness a person experiences, feeling emptiness not around, but inside. This is the kind of loneliness I felt in the main character. I don't know his motives, I don't know who he is, I don't know what he was doing before he sailed, if you think about it, I don't know anything about him at all. It made me follow Redford ten times more closely, catch every little thing in an attempt to understand his character, and I think I succeeded.
I understood why we were not told the backstory, because it doesn’t matter in this case. Each viewer can come up with it himself, come up with one that seems more plausible to him. Perhaps the main character lost a loved one, quarreled with his wife, went broke or he was tortured by a sense of guilt, crushed the press of mistakes made over a long life, any of these options is quite possible, or maybe he just has a crisis - it does not matter. The important thing is that life drove this man into a dead end, and he found a way out in a one-way solo swim.
You might ask why I think that, maybe the man just decided to take a break from everyone on the yacht and there are no deep subtexts to it? But I assure you, there are subtexts and they are all read in the game by Robert Redford. I did not expect that a film with such a seemingly simple and even boring plot will keep me in suspense for all two hours and will not let go for a long time after the credits and this is certainly the merit of the actor who managed to tell the story without saying a word.
This is a story in which there can be no right and wrong answers, every viewer, watching this movie, will see something of his own and understand something that others did not understand, and someone will see nothing but a lonely man in the middle of the ocean, will consider the film boring and empty and this will be his vision. This is not a mosaic in which each piece has a strictly defined place and cannot take someone else’s. It is rather a picture, the content of which depends solely on who looks at it and from what angle.
For me personally, this is the story of a man who lost something very important in his life, he was gradually eaten up by loneliness and guilt, which eventually led him to a yacht in the middle of the ocean. It is also a story about the thirst for life, about the fact that even in the darkest moments of complete loneliness and hopelessness, you have to fight for your life.
P.S. Bravo Mr. Retford - it was really strong. Bravo Alex Ebert - the music was beautiful.
My online translator persistently translates the title "All Is Lost" as well as MoviePoisk. I want to translate it as “all is lost.” I would have had my hands down if I were a hero. Fortunately, he is quite an outstanding person and quite calmly accepts even a hopeless situation. It is this calmness that helps him think soberly and find ...
Out. This light is at the end of the tunnel. But, as if a black cat had crossed the shipping path of the hero’s yacht, one problem obviously and smoothly shifts into another. I am amazed to see how the hero behaves in the next storm of problems, assessing his strength of character and resilience in the face of the inevitable.
The only drawback, in my opinion, in this picture can serve as a bit of understatement regarding the background of the story. What happened before... what happened after... Something similar is in the film Alfonso Cuaron “Gravity”. We are introduced to the disaster and the man in its midst. In Wolfgang Petersen’s The Perfect Storm, for example, much more time is devoted to the background of history. Therefore, the endings of the stories leave different impressions. It is our understatement that gives rise to certain riddles and conjectures, both after viewing and after it.
As if adding fuel to the fire, our hero is almost the whole movie in thought and word. But this is unusual and worthy of praise. Like watching a silent movie.
Drifting in the open sea container pierces the side of the sailboat, on Board which only one person. After patching the hole, he goes further, but soon he is overtaken by a storm that disables communication and navigation. It also runs out of food and water. Above the head is a merciless scorching sun, and behind the shark. And it seems that all is lost, but there is still hope to find at least some vessel.
In 2011, as yet unknown director J.C. Chandor debuted at the Sundance Film Festival with his film The Risk Limit. The film did not gain much fame in the competition, but there is an acquaintance with Robert Redford. Chandor inspires Redford with his new script for the thriller, combining the director’s love for the open sea, the theme about survival and Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Old Man and the Sea. As a result, Robert agrees to take part in this unique project and play a single role.
This film can be compared to Ang Lee's Life of Pi, but JC Chandor made his creation more real, less beautiful and less romantic. Also, it is impossible not to compare with the just thundered film by Alfonso Cuaron “Gravity”, but “Hope Will Not Extinguish” instead of space raging in the ocean and with less fantastic special effects. You can also remember "127 Hours", "Crash", etc. But in all these tapes there were secondary characters, the listed films were not so “silent” and the scripts of these films did not consist of 32 pages.
The film “Hope Will Not Extinguish” (or “All is Lost”) is an adventure drama in the genre of “survival” about the banal desire to survive at any cost and the confrontation against raging nature. That in our life hope is given for a reason and it is never worth giving up. After watching, someone will think that this is a survival manual, and someone will see a movie that gives food for the mind. And I want to believe that in its genre this movie will take a worthy place.
The film owes much to the believable performance of 77-year-old Robert Redford. He demonstrates a good physical shape, performing almost all the tricks himself, and even without words shows how you can keep the viewer at the screens. No wonder critics considered this role almost the best in the career of the legendary actor.
Of course, this is just an episode in the life of the main character. How and why he was alone on a yacht in the open sea we do not know. But it doesn't really matter. After all, the episode of his life shown is probably the most dramatic and emotional. Maybe that’s why he went on his journey?
“I tried. I think you will all agree that I tried my best.
Personally, I am a big fan of films about a strong and invincible human spirit, when a person is left alone in a seemingly hopeless situation. Examples of such films can be cited enough, this is the famous “127 hours”, “Rogue”, “Burried alive”, “Victim”, “Life of Pi”, and of course, relatively recently released film Alfonso Cuaron “Gravity”. Of course, despite the similarity of the situation of the main characters, these films reveal somewhat different themes. And yes, a lot of people think ‘All Is Lost’ isn’t original and boring anymore, but I’m not. I say thank you for another strong film about a strong man.
J.C. Chandor has only made two films. And after watching All Is Lost, I wanted to see his first work. With such a low budget, he managed to make a decent picture. Minimum scenery, minimal effects, minimal actors and cues... yes, I also want to note that there is only one actor in the film and almost no words. But the lack of lines didn't stop Robert Redford from playing so believably. Without further adjectives, Robert Redford has played well and is worth a look.
“All is Lost” is a story about a man who fought hard, fought with dignity, held himself, didn’t give up until the very end and did everything in his power. This film has a character, and its protagonist is an example of real power, in every sense of the word. Shortly digging into the Internet, I came across an excerpt from an interview with the actor about participating in this film: There is such a life position that when everything becomes too difficult, people just give up. But there is another option – to keep fighting, because there is nothing left. The character of the film just kept fighting. That is all that remains: to continue.”
It is said that three things can be observed endlessly: how fire burns, water flows and the starry sky shines. Well, in the new film with the participation of Robert Redford “Hope will not fade”, the main (and only) character will have the opportunity to observe at least two phenomena from this list.
Once Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, being a brilliant writer and playwright, voiced a very interesting idea: "If in the first act of the play hangs a gun on the wall, then in the last act it must certainly shoot." So, if this statement is applied to a film by J.C. Chandor (and many other films with a similar theme), then it will suffer about the following changes: “If the events of the film take place in the sea or ocean, then in the course of action there must necessarily be a storm.” Sounds less metaphorical than the words of Anton Palich, but very true.
An elderly man wakes up aboard his own yacht to a strange sound and sees a fountain splashing water into the cabin. Climbing to the deck, he notices that a container, apparently accidentally lost by some sea vessel, literally crashed into the hull of the yacht. It is from this moment that the irreconcilable struggle of our hero for his life begins. Cut off from the outside world, in proud solitude, Redford's character faces a real challenge. Will he be able to handle it?
JC Chandor invites the viewer to witness this desperate confrontation of man with the forces of nature and the tricks of Poseidon. It is worth admitting that throughout the entire timekeeping, it is extremely difficult to break away from the screen, and you empathize with the hero really sincerely. Of course, there are skeptics who will find the film banally boring, but believe me, if you try to imbue yourself with the creation of Chandor, there is a chance to get a lot of fun. Much credit to the success of Robert Redford, who speaks little, acts much. And indeed, in the picture everything happens literally without unnecessary words, but thanks to the magnificent Redford, the viewer can guess what the hero thinks about in a particular episode, what emotions he experiences. It should be noted that in the first half of the film, the man radiates confidence, acts calmly and with knowledge, using all his life and sea experience. In the future, when circumstances play against the hero with enviable constancy, his hope will gradually fade away, and his physical and moral forces will treacherously leave (Redford perfectly conveys all this), however, to believe in a miracle to the last, to be brave, persistent, in every sense strong - this can not be taken away from him. “Never give up” is the slogan of the film and its main leitmotif.
Looking at the picture “Hope Will Not Extinguish” (the original name “All is Lost”, but our distributors, as usual, know how, can, practice), at one moment it may seem that there is something in this tape that happened to see before. Of course, the analogies are very minor, and Chandor’s film can safely claim the epithet “original”, but someone will effortlessly notice the points of contact with last year’s Oscar triumphant “Life of Pi”, and someone with the recent Oscar triumphant “Gravity” (both tapes were successful in technical nominations, and their directors received their statuettes). The most attentive viewer will not lose sight of the container ship of the Danish company Maersk, because more recently Tom Hanks tried to save the crew of the same vessel from Somali pirates in Captain Phillips.
Despite the fact that the events take place exclusively in the expanses of the Indian Ocean (and also because of this), the film is largely chamber. Robert Redford’s large-scale and medium-sized plans are much more visible than the general plans of the open ocean or any seascapes. In his scenario, fit in a few dozen pages, Chandor is limited to minimalist means (as evidenced by a penny budget by Hollywood standards): despite a rather monotonous background in the background, he manages to create an impressive atmosphere (much thanks to Redford and a beautiful sound range) and from props in the presence of a yacht, an inflatable boat and a bag with items necessary for survival in the sea.
In addition, the film was awarded the Golden Globe in the category "Best Soundtrack", and Robert Redford himself deservedly nominated for this film award in the category "Best Actor in a Drama" (and undeservedly did not make the Oscar shortlist). As for the “Oscar”, the film claimed the award in the technical nomination “Best editing of sound”, but in the end the statuette went to the aforementioned “Gravity”.
Drawing certain conclusions, it is not superfluous to say that the viewer can actually learn a lot of interesting things from the film. For example, the fact that a strong person is a huge advantage in the fight against even the most unfavorable circumstances, or the fact that 77-year-old Robert Redford – in fact the founder of the independent film festival “Sundance” – is in great shape. To say that he has incredible charisma is to say nothing, rather, there is some unknown vitality in him, an energy that makes his character look so convincing and believable. But the most important thing is this: this film is a solid proof that the viewer’s hope for a good movie will not only not fade away, it will break out with renewed force with a bright flame and will remain in the hearts of each of us for a very long time.
In his second film, the director JC Chandor switched from a large number of eminent actors to real minimalism. There is only one character and no dialogue in . But it is a magnificent Robert Redford and a mighty sea. A simple, but not empty story about an elderly man wandering alone on a sailboat clearly refers to the famous novel by Ernest Hemingway. It's the same story about struggle. All attention is focused on one person, and Robert Redford certainly played a brilliant role, almost without a single word.
Perhaps more important is what is left behind. The picture does not tell what moved the hero to go to such a risky event alone. This is important, because most people would not risk such a trip. But there are so many. Someone goes to the sea, someone climbs the mountains, someone goes down a stormy river, someone climbs among the rocks (you can recall the recent "127 hours" Danny Boyle). In fact, most of these actions seem strange. The author is silent about this, does not give an answer, but, as it seems, this technique is justified. Everything is done to make the viewer think and, perhaps, having determined his place on the planet, realize what life is preparing for him - a series of storms and lumens.
The first thing you pay attention to is the Russian translation of the title “Hope will not fade away”. Although the original is a bit different from “All in Lost.” Of course I like it better.
The film may seem boring to some, but it keeps you on edge all the time. And in the absence of dialogue in principle does not lose meaning, everything is clear and without words. It's very realistic. A sense of hopelessness permeates the entire film, I until the last expected a bad end to the film.
Robert Redford coped with the role perfectly, no one else I can not imagine.
The only incomprehensible fact for me was that there is no history, it is not clear why and how he ended up on the high seas all alone.
I really liked the film, it looks easy, but at the same time you are very worried about the main character. Events unfold very competently: as soon as you calm down a little and it seems that everything will get better, something happens again, because of which you again lose hope for salvation.
The dramatic story of the struggle for the life of an old man in the vast expanses of the ocean is not new. Literature and, moreover, modern cinema have offered many interpretations of the adventures of a man who is not fading in spirit, alone and on the verge of survival. Therefore, when viewing involuntarily you have to compare with something.
Empathy, emotional tension, this tape was clearly not enough. The drama of a wealthy elderly traveler, who went to old age to conquer the seas and oceans on a luxury yacht, is not at all in comparison with the tragedy that fell to the lot of an innocent boy from the recent Life of Pi. Extraordinary skills, professionalism and training in the maritime business of the protagonist cause a sense of confidence for his fate. No matter how scary and unsettling it is, there is absolute peace of mind (akin to the image of Captain Phillips). The plot intrigues, rapid turns and heartbreaking episodes we never saw. And without this, unfortunately, to call the film “Hope will not fade” something more than just a good beautiful movie, does not work.
That’s what distinguishes this work of J.C. Chandor from a series of its kind – is a trump ace up the sleeve in the face of Robert Redford. This actor, it feels like no one else is needed on the set. Amazing charisma, patience and fearlessness do not require unnecessary words and faces. It's fascinating to watch him, even when he's shaving or just eating. The minimalism of what is happening seems to place the viewer in the epicenter of events, leaving one on one with the hero and the collapse of his hopes. A momentary weakness in the form of a sky-facing cry of “Fuck!” returns to viewing bored or listened to beautiful sound effects.
Another element of good cinema is atmospheric chamber music, which becomes more disturbing with the growth of hopelessness, nervous exhaustion of the main character.
The visual picture from the first minutes of the story sets the thought that only your own strength and indomitability of spirit determine your fate, luck can smile at any moment, you just need to be ready to accept it. Hope is always there, nothing is lost.
How, with the advent of such films, nothing is lost in modern cinema.
The old man and the sea, or the free wind blows wherever he wants.
Bresson said, My experience shows that the more I act mechanically, the more impressive it is. One might think that dramatic art is something to be avoided in cinema.
Before us is a picture where the dramatic game is at a minimum and attention is riveted just by the routine actions of the hero, then improving life, then struggling with the elements. Another story in the spirit of the Old Testament Job, where a person gets hope by refusing all material goods and from life including.
The essence of what is happening is something like in Hemingway’s “Old Man” – an old sea wolf tries to subjugate nature, but in the end the opposite happens. The story is like a metaphor, but only the truth.
This is a kind of outlet from the bablosters, in the spirit of "Gravity", drifting on the waves of simplicity ... Just hoping he doesn't drown!
A strong, experienced man (Redford) travels by sea (ocean?) on a good, medium-sized yacht. However, at some point, he loses orientation in space, and after his yacht is destroyed by a storm that flew from nowhere. A man has to fight for his life, using all his experience.
As a cinematic experiment, this film certainly deserves attention. “Hope will not fade” is essentially a solo performance in which the hero of Redford for the whole film utters several dozen phrases, and the rest of the time quite “deliciously” trying to survive among the violent waters of the open sea. It is clear that with this idea, the most difficult thing for director and screenwriter Jay C. Chandor was to make sure that the viewer did not get bored. And I'm afraid that he did it only with a great stretch. In my opinion, this material could make a great 30-40 minute short, but for 100 minutes of events in the frame, frankly, not enough.
Plus, I don't understand the general admiration for the hero of this film. They say, an exorbitant will to live, incredible moral and physical efforts, grit your teeth and never give up. There was no such thing here. The hero of the film did no more and no less in this situation than many others in his place. I don't think anyone would just lie down at the bottom of the boat and die, that's stupid. Now, don't get me wrong, I admit that Redford's character has the ingenuity and skill that he seems to have based on his rich life experience, but he didn't have to cut his hand with a blunt knife, climb a mountain pass after dining with his dead comrades, or dive into underground lakes, knowing that there's a 99 percent chance you won't come out.
What I want to note is the musical accompaniment - it was very worthy and really deserved to win at the Golden Globe. It is strange that the Oscar academics ignored him and did not even include him in the nomination. Well, the acting of Robert Redford also helped this film to be unduly sad. Redford very well played the despair that was squirming in the eyes of his character.
“Hope will not fade away” is an interesting cinematic experiment in the form of a sea solo performance, which has a lot of advantages and just as many disadvantages. I found this film boring, but it is not at all the fact that it will seem the same to you.
7 out of 10
It is said that a person can look almost endlessly at three things: how a fire burns, water flows, and other people work. As Robert Redford works to save his life, it counts. This film is part of the same series as Buried Alive and 127 Hours, the story of a man who finds himself in trouble. And it seems that the original name "All is lost" indicates the outcome, but our distributors do not agree with this statement of the question - while a person is alive, hope is alive with him.
However, the position of the main and only hero is quite ordinary - a breach in the hull of the ship and the approaching storm. But the movie is much more specific. It is full of allegories that you can look for, or you can not look for – a person tries to go to the intended goal, but the circumstances are against him. We don't know anything about Redford's character, who he is in everyday life - for those who like "guessing." The nameless tall, tanned man speaks only three times, one phrase shorter than the previous one.
Of course, this picture is an experiment and the director understands that an hour and a half of contemplation of how a person does something a lot without talking, so he accelerates events with the help of editing. Here's Redford crawling down the deck -- one! -- he's already inside the cabin. Thus, the dynamics does not let you get bored. The film should not be recommended to everyone. This is the case when the movie has to look at the mood, which may not come.
