Guillermo del Toro’s mystical horror film “Mama” is one of my favorite horror movies, despite its simplicity. Yes, maybe this picture is replete with worn-out techniques such as sharp loud sounds, but the plot and image of the “Mother” itself completely compensate for these shortcomings.
The film begins with a bank clerk going crazy, wetting all his employees and wife, then picking up two young daughters and leaving with them in the woods. There he is going to kill them, and then shoot himself, but then a creature suddenly appears from the black wall and twists his neck. From this moment on, the girls begin to live with “Mom”. Four years later, their uncle finds the feral sisters and takes them home, and the creepy creature from the wall “moves” to him with the girls.
Despite the fact that the film can not be called new, after all, 2013, the special effects and the image of “Mama” quite impressed me. The creature looks rather creepy and unusual, in horror films I always miss that. And the story itself is interesting, not just some “evil spirit who was disturbed and now he is obscurantist.” There is a fascinating backstory, which makes even a little sympathetic to “Mom”. Well, the ending was good, too. She is, and she's pretty good! This is often not the case in horror movies. Of course, the film is not without flaws, but in General to watch a cozy evening is very recommended.

Guillermo del Toro in the credits already says that the film will be interesting, scary and unusual. When you watch it, you realize that there is someone else in the room besides you.
“...moms and dads are, they try very hard, but sometimes they make mistakes. . . ?
Many times I have put off watching this movie in the “long box”. The reasons were different, but after watching it, I regretted not seeing it earlier. The film caused me very mixed emotions, but more positive ones. So today I want to talk about the work of a really talented director Andres Muschietti “Mama”.
Before a detailed analysis, we will highlight the criteria by which I will evaluate this film. Such criteria will be the plot, acting, soundtrack and atmosphere, since first of all “Mama” is a horror film.
Plot: The father, because of a difficult situation in life, destroyed his family, his job and fled with his children to an abandoned forest house, where he met with unknown forces. To be honest, this storyline surprises you from start to finish, without slowing down for a second. What surprises him, you ask? I can’t say for sure, but I think for the most part it’s a very unusual story that goes from beginning to end. It is by its ambiguity that this plot shocks the viewer, that is, it copes with the main task of the horror genre, namely to frighten or shock the viewer, as I wrote above. And it is shocking not by typical techniques, but by its depth and terrible history. Cleacher genre, of course, are present, but they are so subtle that the overall impression does not spoil. Special attention deserves this incredible ending, which is very ambiguous, unusual and not understandable in a good way. In total, this criterion is done well, and for the horror genre it is so delicious.
Acting: I would not call this criterion some strong, incredible and so on. Because the actors, as such, did not shine much, but that does not mean that they played poorly. They were very realistic, you really believed each of them. Also, the disclosure of the characters was also done well, and for the horror genre it is generally excellent. You felt in each hero a full-fledged character, a personality, in other words. They were not similar to each other, each had their own story, their “skeletons in the closet”, their views on life and so on. But for some reason I can’t call their game so strong, I don’t understand why. Probably because the characters, at least in any movie, should be like that? Don't know. Just against the background of the storyline, you really focused more on the narrative than on the heroes. I can single out at least someone, for example, Megan Charpentier, who played the role of Victoria and Isabel Neliss, who played the role of Lilly. Despite their age at the time of filming, the actresses fully integrated into their role and played perfectly. They have a great future if they don’t ruin it themselves. In addition to them, I can single out only Javier Boteta, who played the role of Mother herself. This actor is known to the world for playing such scary, crazy characters. I don’t want to single out others, because they played just well, no one really shone anything. In total, this criterion, although weaker than the previous one, is also made decently, and for the horror genre it is as perfect as I wrote above.
Soundtrack: Musical accompaniment in horror films plays not the last role, since music completely affects the atmosphere itself. Here, the musical accompaniment was also at a good level, not lower than the previous criteria for sure. The music was so noir-style that it was for the most part constantly inflating the atmosphere, which is both good and bad at the same time. The bad thing is that sitting in constant tension is not particularly high, but on the other hand, horror films are genre movies and should keep the viewer in suspense from the first to the last minute, which was here. The sounds of Mom were made in general chic, very reminiscent of the Sea Virgin in the series of games “The Witcher”. Overall, I liked this criterion very much. It is very well made for the genre of horror.
Atmosphere and Mom: The atmosphere in the film is just incredible. That’s what I always look forward to in the horror genre as a big fan of the genre. I have written many times that you are really nervous until the very end. You are frightened by the slightest sounds, the slightest change in palette. Plus, the top is even more pressed by soundtrack, which creates suspense. The plot does not allow you to be distracted for a second, because you are afraid to miss an important moment. And just a mountain in the midst of all this stands Mother. It was so beautifully done. These were not special effects, but a real actor who was so made up. For her portrayal, I'm just willing to thank and shake hands with the staff of the film. Overall, this criterion is done very well for the horror genre. And directly shows and proves that you are really watching a horror movie, not some thrash.
Thus, the horror film with elements of the thriller “Mama” I really liked. I didn’t expect this movie to be so good, so expectations were low, and in fact, I just got a standard horror genre. I have nothing to complain about here. The film is good in every aspect. Would I review it again? Probably not. Because the second time you don't get it, you don't feel it. There is no hint of the classics of the genre, but the movie is really strong and is a good representative of its genre. Do I recommend watching? Yeah, I recommend it. “Mama” is a good movie, sometimes very interesting, perhaps with very good acting. But he lacks a lot of little things to make something great. Because you don't feel like the next generation is going to make this movie a benchmark. Although who knows it, when they shot “Friday the 13th”, no one expected that it would become a classic of the genre, but it became the same. I hope my review was helpful. Thank you for your attention'
The fact that horror films, in general, are not quoted in a critical environment, where they are ranked as a second-rate mainstream, designed only for a narrow target audience in the age range of children and young people. But, nevertheless, horror films both came out and will be released, and many of the now recognized great stars of world cinema built their careers with various types of horror and slashers. One of the pronounced masters of horror was the beloved and revered Wes Craven (creator of the cult & #39; Nightmare on Elm Street'); who, unfortunately, not so long ago left our mortal world. The empty niche was instantly occupied by a creative tandem consisting of James Wan and Lee Wannell, bosom friends from university times, who gave the world franchises ' Saw', ' Astral' and ' Conjuring'. But without competition, the genre can wither, so the appearance of Argentine Andres Muschetti among the directors of horror films can only be rejoiced. It was he who shot the acclaimed horror ' It' by Stephen King, and then its sequel. But the start of Muschietti’s career was put in 2013, when he directed a Spanish-Canadian horror film 'Mama'.
At first glance, it could be surprising that the project for $ 15 million was attached to an unknown and without any experience, except for a couple of short films, the director, but here we must take into account not only the fact that the sister of Andres Muschetti Barbara is a producer, which may have contributed to the promotion of Muschetti on the cinematic ladder, but also the moment that one of the short films was & #39; Mom', which interested Spanish and Canadian producers. So we can say that Muschetti in his own way was lucky that his works did not remain unknown. It was also lucky that to adapt the script to an already full-length project, a more experienced writer in this field, Neil Cross, was attached. But the greatest luck of Muschetti, in my humble opinion, is the selection of actors: the main roles were approved Nikolai Koster-Waldau, who is very famous and revered in Scandinavia, and Jessica Chastain, in the early 2010s, entered the rank of star.
And it all begins in 'Mom' with the events when a father is driving his two little daughters somewhere at high speed. Toddlers have a natural question: ' Where's Mom?' but that the father is twisted by a streamlined explanation. And at first glance it is noticeable that the man is in a state of excitement and as if he is trying to take away his daughters as soon as possible from some terrible danger. And this state and manner of driving, even at the level of the subconscious, suggests only one thing - it will not end well. In principle, this is what happens... Five years later, the wild girls are found, and the poor artist, the twin brother of their father (Nicolas Coster-Waldau), wants to take the girls to his house and educate them. Obviously, their new caregiver loves their nieces a lot. But this event is not particularly enthusiastic friend of the heart of the artist - rock musician Annabelle (Chastane). When the girls’ uncle is in a hospital bed, Annabelle takes care of the girls. And soon it becomes clear: some otherworldly entity came along with the sisters and now terrorizes the poor woman.
Fans get a plentiful influx of adrenaline from the constantly inflating atmosphere with the help of musical accompaniment and sudden sharp moments, will have to disappoint somewhat: ' Mom' is not a full-fledged horror film, it also has melodramatic branches on the topic of family and devotion; and these issues will be given a lot of time in the timing of the picture. On the other hand, this should not discourage you from viewing, since some scenes will still resemble old-good mystical horrors about evil spirits from the other world, when even the heart can shake. And if we touch on acting, then, again, in my personal opinion, the character of Uncle girls is spelled out very succinctly, which is why the full potential of Nikolai Koster-Waldau is not revealed (if you consider it, I will not be afraid of this word, an outstanding game in the tape & #39; Shot into the void'). But Jessica Chastain is much more lucky: her character Annabelle undergoes a characteristic modification when she turns from a distant woman into a caring carer, ready even for self-sacrifice, which is clearly demonstrated in the climactic scene ' Moms'. And the talent of the actress allowed to express the dramatic depth of the image, so, in general, it is clear why Chastain is the first violin in the film.
And as for me, 'Mama' is a good example of a horror film, somewhat variable in the genre and not going according to its canons, diligently drawing something new and unknown in horror. And cheer the fans of the talent of actress Jessica Chastain, who was able in such a highly specialized genre to reveal the image provided from a sudden side, so that her awards and nominations at thematic film festivals are well deserved. And it is good that with the appearance of Andres Muschietti, the duo of James Wan and Lee Wannell received a worthy rival to grow and be better within the framework of fair competition.

P.S. And notice, in the review of a single mention of Guillermo del Toro.
Can drama be terrible and horrors dramatic? We get the answer at the end of this picture.
Guillermo, time and time again, shows us a high-quality and deeply wounding video sequence. The eternal confrontation of the male and female principle is sharpened to the limit and hits directly in the heart and nerves.
Once again showing and proving the destructive influence of masculinity. Infernal female - ready even for mystical exercises - in order to experience the feeling of motherhood again, here evokes a sense of compassion and understanding of the irreparable pain of loss.
The struggle of good and evil, of light and darkness, is the eternal yin-yang of all things, in this Universe the Alpha and Omega of Life and Death. Children - the fruits of life and love, are also shown in this picture believably.
Their crystal-clear love is not able to tarnish in this world - nothing and no one. Presented and implemented, all this is at a high level - children - actresses, well done - believe and compassion - with all your soul and heart.
For mysticism - like love and the most real and living love. . .
Andreas Muschietti's mom is a big disappointment. It was possible to make a really strong film out of such material and with such assets, because there was almost everything for it: a powerful idea based on abandoned children, raised like beasts in the forest, a strong caste, a talented cameraman and artist. But here's where it didn't come together, so it was at the stage of the script, which was probably worth working through better.
The film tells the story of two abandoned girls – their father went crazy, shot his business partners and killed his wife. Desperate, he took the kids and went wherever his eyes looked. On the way, he failed to control, crashed his car and, having thought of nothing better, went to the woods, where he soon came across an abandoned hut. Here he decided to commit suicide, having previously “relieved the suffering” of his young daughters. However, the cabin in the woods - so beloved by American horror makers and fans of their products object - and here was inhabited by a supernatural, which, fulfilling the first intention of the mad dad, prevented him from fulfilling the second. The supernatural raised the girls and was called Mama. And so they would have lived in the woods without grief, had they not been found five years later by hunters. Then I remembered about them already had time to mentally bury their uncle, the twin brother of the father, who took them for his upbringing. The girls moved into a new family, but with them moved and Mom.
The plot does not shine originality, but hints at several serious problems at once, with an “adult” approach to which it was possible to make a strong and intelligent film. However, the director, being a clear fan of genre cinema, concentrated on whipping up the atmosphere and creating episodes designed to scare the viewer with loud sounds and terrible faces. And while Mr. Muschetti was climbing out of his skin, trying to instill fear in the hearts of the audience in the most base and primitive ways, while the actors were climbing out of their skin, trying to justify the illogical behavior of their heroes in the proposed circumstances, the main thing leaked from the film unnoticed - drama, without which catharsis is impossible, and therefore the horror wrought in the genre segment does not work. Along with the drama flowed logic.
The film is replete with plot blunders and white spots.
[not to mention technical blunders, like shooting night scenes in broad daylight, which look like real bullying]
There are too many questions left unanswered.
[not such questions, which like the viewer must answer himself, and those, which would have to answer the author, so as not to leave confusion in the eyes of the viewer]
This is the story of Mama,
[ which I will not retell to avoid spoilers]
and the stories of girls, their father, and occupying the main space in the action of the film confrontation of the uncle of girls.
[more precisely than his girlfriend, suddenly by the middle of the film took a central place in history]
And Moms. Like key questions, the authors respond, “No matter, we’re going to go further, there’s another jumpscare with demonic music around the corner.” Although the film seems to pretend to be a serious story about love and growing up, sometimes it even comes very close to the most important and pressing issues, but at the most critical moment it goes back, leaving an uncomfortable feeling of understatement: the theme of the essay, as they say, is not disclosed, and leaves the finale of the film in complete bewilderment. What was it all about? What do you think the audience should do?
Of course, not everything in the movie is bad. The main treasure of the film is an excellent cast, mainly in the person of Nicholas Coster-Waldau, Jessica Chastain and amazing in their organic girls. Without them, I think the movie would have been impossible. But as usual, the caste was not enough. After all, as you know, if you have a good script on your hands, then even with a more or less hulking performance, there is a chance to make a tolerable movie. But if the script is bad, you have to work hard to make it a good movie. Muschietti obviously didn't try very hard.
Already from the first frames and throughout, questions arise: why such a sharp installation? Why are some dialogues so unnatural and unmotivated? comrade screenwriter, isn't your ghost too "physical" so to speak? What did the director want to say about this strange scene? You don’t usually notice the whole kitchen, but not this time. With all this ugliness, the atmosphere is completely killed, the boredom is incredible, and the finale is just beyond. A great moment, or rather, the scene is the dream of the main character, there is nothing else to look at.
Sound is all copypaste. Movie Borrowing: There's the Call, Silent Hill, Silence of the Lambs, maybe what else. Blinking light? Was. A flashlight that doesn't work at the right time? Pfft. A camera instead of a flashlight? It was already. A cabin in the woods? Stop it! Overall, the film is more than enough template, but the director lacks professionalism.
I postponed watching this film for a very long time, as every friend of mine, rightly so, wanted to speak about “Mother” for the worse, saying that it is boring, not interesting and stupid, and of the terrible here only a couple of screamers.
But after learning that Guillermo del Toro himself had his hand on it, I immediately decided to see it.
And was quite pleased.
Horror movies have stopped scaring me since 2001 (when I was 6), but they haven’t really impressed me. For this reason, I began to appreciate horror movies by very different criteria than most fans of this genre - and "Mama" fits all the criteria.
The criteria I am talking about are specific moments, conditions, so to speak, that I especially appreciate in this genre of films.
First is suspense or voltage. I’m not talking about the fact that we have to flinch from any rustle in the film (especially, this is not possible), I’m talking about the expectation of something that makes us blink less and hold our breath more often for fear of missing something.
Secondly - the appropriate scenario and its implementation. Specifically in this film, the script practically does not sag, there is no understatement, ... almost.
I will say a very strange thing, but still - the film lacks water, so to speak, an extra second of camera flight, an extra word, an extra look and a sigh.
The third is a talented operator. Here, as in the previous paragraph, you can see the hand of Guillermo del Toro, who is famous for his beauty, fantasy and unique shots, which, as in the films of Zack Snyder and Quentin Tarantino, are created for wallpaper on the desktop!
And fourth, is almost the main criterion, because of which, as I long postponed watching the film, and the studio postponed its implementation, it is the actors. That’s right, the whole film is based on actors, and a huge bias is made on the play of girls – Megan Charpentier and Isabel Neliss; and I’m sure that many refused to make the film because it is, in fact, built on the game of children!
Remember the same “Exorcist” – a film that is built on almost the same scheme, and many did not want to take it under their wing for the same reason!
Of course I may be wrong, but it seems very possible to me!
All these criteria are masterfully intertwined and create a holistic picture that is interesting to observe!
Although “Mama” as a horror film, not much “shot”, but it is worth watching all fans of Guillermo del Toro and psychological thrillers who want to seem horror!
First of all, I want to say that if you really love horror movies, go to them regularly and are in every way fanatic - you should not watch this movie. There's absolutely nothing in it that's not in hundreds of other standard, stamped horror movies. The director seemed to be shooting a film, in parallel with the list of everything that should be in the average quality of a film of this genre: a ghost trying to possess a child is there; a couple of boo!-moments that do not scare today and a six-year-old is there; an obsessed doctor who wanted a sensation, and then you know what usually happens, - just sign up; using the image of a mentally unstable person as the main evil - well, where without this! Add another computer animation, from the look of which you do not even laugh - you want to cry, and you get "Mom". Oh, and add to this one of the main characters, which the writers almost immediately sent into a coma almost before the credits.
It happens that a horror film saves a well-built plot, idea, atmosphere or even musical accompaniment (would Halloween become so famous if it were not for Carpenter’s trembling melody?). Here you can only note a good game Chastain. Well, okay, maybe sometimes the picture reminds of the old days, when Del Toro chips looked like part of a unique style, and not endless repetitions of himself.
There is nothing more to say.
This picture left a very double impression, largely due to a misunderstanding of the question, what did the director want to convey to us?
The film began in the genre of horror, and ended in the genre of fairy tale-fantasy. Such a transition completely negates the original approach to the film as a horror film. You're sitting there waiting for your hair to stand on end, especially after you see it all filmed. And it's very high-quality. Naturally, there were moments when you shudder, which makes you even more sure that you are watching a horror movie. And from the very sight of Moms really ran goosebumps on the body.
Mama’s story was revealed very superficially, and not all the details are clear, so (hereinafter spoiler), seeing the emotions of Mama herself in the last minutes of the film, I stopped being horrified by her appearance and I became even somewhat sorry for her, although at the beginning of the film there was a completely different impression about her. And the final scene gave the impression that I saw a certain picture in the genre of fantasy.
Of course, it is filmed beautifully, but this transition leaves a double impression of the picture.
For me, it’s a solid seven because of the picture, because of the popular actors, because of their acting. And also because of the acting of little girls who incredibly well played their roles - they made believe in the reality of what is happening.
Shot beautifully, the plot is not quite typical, a non-standard end and an unusual transition from one genre to another.

Ask me what makes me watch movies like this. You won't get a clear answer. I usually don't get into my pocket. It is clear what attracted us in this at the end of the Soviet era. The first collection of cassettes for the first video recorder in my life do you think the classics of world cinema were? Yeah, well, fifty creeps. One is dumber than the other. The second dozen broke. When from the initial frames, competing with her husband in speed, predicted: now they will go to the forest, there will be divided and they will be killed one by one. Or another of a dozen template options. It stopped being even funny, became boring and it was time for a normal movie.
However, sometimes something with terrible force pulls back to the genre. This was the case with Alejandro Amenabar’s The Others, who not only once again revealed the porcelain beauty of Nicole Kidman and not so much seriously frightened as gave a new look at the concept of sin and forgiveness. The diameter is the opposite of what it was before. A year ago, The Woman in Black with Daniel Radcliffe.
The grown-up boy wizard perfectly played the only normal person around, and the film left the impression of the most terrible horror that can be imagined. There are a number of prohibited techniques used, which at the physiological level affect the viewer, but there is a pathos. Such an absolute escapism: in the pampas you can not hide from this cruel world, the way out is to reunite with everyone who loves you, in paradise, fanfare!
Today I just wanted to choose what to do in the next few days in the cinema. Just choose. And at the same time refresh the memory of what interesting happened since the beginning of the year and, oh horror, passed by me. I can even lie to myself that I just wanted to watch the trailer for that February premiere film, which intrigued with the slogan: Who cared for children in the deep woods (center of Europe, the deep forest, five years of searching, what?) all these years.
I'll tell you what, comrades. It's a little weak in the mind, almost nothing in the heart, but not so bad. And here's what's good, the script thought, in general, stepped forward. Because neither the step-by-step development of events (as it was so often before), nor the ending, could not predict. Moderately scary, quite logical (I appreciate when the characters behave not like patients of Bedlam), the general humanistic orientation. If you want to be afraid, I recommend it.
Honestly, I often came across this film, but I did not dare to watch it, probably because there was some premonition that this was another film, how someone moved into someone and then half of the film was cast out evil. I don’t mean to say that these films are not interesting. There are many such films that are shot under one copy. So I finally got to this movie. And I'll say I didn't regret it. This is probably the first film in the genre 'horrors', 'fantasy', 'thriller' at the end of which I shed a tear worrying for both the main characters and the sinister essence.
This film differs from many horror films in that it is 'live', emotional, keeps in suspense and makes you worry throughout the film. And what struck me most was that the director rewarded the sinister essence with feelings. Throughout the film, the entity interacted with the main characters. And it wasn’t just about killing someone (as in horror movies), it was about protecting someone. And that struck me. . .
I was also impressed by the actors. Jessica Chastain (Isabelle) in my opinion perfectly played her role in the film, reincarnating from a rocker of a fluffy mother. Megan Charpentier (Victoria) and Isabel Neliss (Lily) also played their roles perfectly, playing the role ' Mowgli children'.
It is a pity that I did not see this film in the cinema, completely immersed in the atmosphere of the film. But I can advise fans of action films to watch it. And my score is 10 out of 10, because this movie has a different atmosphere than other horror movies.
Mom is a good horror game that will make you watch what is happening with interest. Indeed, rarely any horror film can boast an interesting and intriguing plot. In the movie "Mom" - interest is heated constantly! But everything in order.
The storyline seemed to me extremely tempting and intriguing, literally from the very first shots, the viewer is attracted to this world, lured into this story, literally pushed inside locking the door behind her back. The plot is built in such a way that the film does not reveal its cards to you until the very end, but makes you think and guess how it actually happened and what happened at all. In the story, I have few complaints, it is not banal, and does not look like standard horror films involving children.
I’ll say that I’m a little tired of the moments when stupidity is attached to the film. It is stupidity, because as much as possible, in all films of this genre there are elements when for a long time, people allegedly do not see or notice anything around them, hide or vice versa become very active, as superheroes try to resist evil spirits, which leads to sad consequences. Here, too, the film took the baton and to some extent took some of these elements – this is a very serious disadvantage.
The overall rating of the plot is weakly positive.
The acting in this tape did not seem to me any impressive or fascinating, not at all. Very faded and undisclosed characters, which is a significant disadvantage of the script. And that's not all. The children played tolerable, especially I want to highlight a girl named Isabel Neliss. She played a younger sister named Lily, and was one of the most interesting characters in the whole film. Her performance caused me good emotions, in her actions and behavior I did not doubt, her acting skills and potential, I think close to the level of Jessica Brown, my favorite actress in horror with children (Christie, Paranormal 3).
As for the main person of the film - Jessica Chastain, then there is nothing to say about her, did not impress, but the language will not turn bad about her, played in a neutral position, in other words - did not stand out.
The actress who played the older sister Victoria, caused a double impression, she played not stable, then I admired her game without taking my eyes off the young talented girl, then I looked at the monitor with bewilderment and thought, “How so?” Did they put in a bad double by mistake? The incomprehensible performance of Nikolai Coster-Waldau (Lucas) is absolutely not the emotions that should be, not what I wanted to see, an absolute disappointment, for me personally.
General assessment of acting - neutral
The main star of the film is Isabel Neliss (Lili)
The main disappointment - Nikolai Coster-Waldau (Lucas)
At the moment, I want to note that I didn’t really like the way “Mother” was depicted, well, not a drop is scary, and it looks too much like a clipping from a cartoon. Here I would like to see either a make-up person or a graphic of more significant quality. The very image of the mother - negated all the realism of what is happening.
In the end, before you a good horror film, in which there is intrigue, there is interest that appears from the beginning and does not retreat until the end. The tape is not from the category of “watched-forgotten”, no, the film is really attractive, but some disadvantages that are serious for me do not allow this film to be ranked higher than what you will see below.
Should I watch this movie? If you are a fan of this genre – of course, this movie can also be interesting, even if you are not a fan of Horror, there is a story that many people will like. Love for your mother is forever, and this movie proves it once again.
In 2008, the director Andres Muschietti presents to the audience his debut project - a short film "Mom". The project was peculiar: for 3 minutes of the film, we were rather horribly scared and... that’s all... that Muschetti wanted to say this apparently only he knows. But now 2013 has come and we seem to have received the answer to the question – the director again puts “Mom” on the court of the public, only now it is a complete feature film.
Many modern horror movies make the same mistake of neglecting the plot. Neglect can result from a blind repetition of what we have already seen, or simply from any lack of logic. But the film “Mom” personifying a classic horror film in combination with the concept of “children of Mowgli” (the concept is unusual and I would even say new, for this genre) brings the plot to a qualitatively new level.
Let’s think about what this simple word “mama” means to us, what does it mean? I think many will agree that mother is a symbol of life, boundless kindness, love that will warm our souls: “The word mother sounds beautiful and tender.” And here we have a ghost, a clot of a perverted, black soul, a soul eager to give someone its unspent motherly love. Then it becomes really scary, because fear is not only an image of something unknown, or frightening. Fear is when light becomes darkness, when love becomes thirst, when good becomes evil.
In general, the idea of motherly love is put at the forefront here. She is also present in the theme of the ghost, she is personified by the main character - Annabelle, played by the inimitable Jessica Chastain. The image of Annabel serves as a proof of the truth known to all, so beautifully voiced by the poet Alexander Kuznetsov: “Any woman, first of all, is a mother...” The main character was a rebellious character (rocker), she did not want to become a mother to strangers' children, and went to it only for the sake of a loved one. But, over time, she woke up to motherly feelings, and she is ready to protect these children, to help them. She ceased to be Annabelle to them, and became a mother.
There are many other things in the film: jealousy, the pain of the past, the investigation process, etc. Muschietti paid much attention to the plot, which in many ways affected the horror component. Unfortunately, the plot itself does not look holistic, but it pays off, both the ideas of the film and a good game of actors. It's been a long time since I've had such a high rating for horror, which means something.
9 out of 10
The parody of “Mom” was worse than the film itself
I finally got to see the movie that everyone was talking about. What caused the noise is unclear.
To make it scary, it's not the most, but it's an important part of a horror movie. It was terrible once almost at the end, the rest of the time I watched “Mama” with a stone face. The image of Mama has absorbed all the shortcomings that can be. Firstly, its typical, similar appearance in the same Samara Morgan, with the difference that “Call” is much more interesting. Secondly, typical movements: the monster quickly crawls on protruding hands with sharp elbows, the monster rises above the bed, the monster in the penumbra. Third, the terrible cardboard character because of the fact that poorly revealed his story. They said what happened, in general.
Funny, but "Scary Movie 5" - just a parody of horrors! - scared much more. In addition, the girls and their guardian show more feelings there. And the mother herself is scary and charismatic.
I love it when it’s not so scary, but the plot is interesting, even a little confusing. In short, thrillers. Or drama with elements of horror and mysticism. But even before that "Mom" does not reach. The unpleasant moment when the creator of the work (in this case, the movie) comes up with biographies of positive and negative characters, but neither the plot nor the characters then receive special development. The feeling of deception, as if you buy a cake in which there is a lot of filling, but it is worth biting a couple of times - then one dough. We need to work on it more.
After two small short films, an unknown director Andres Muschietti makes his debut film in 2013 called "Mama". A horror film with a budget of 15 million dollars pays off at the box office and makes a huge jackpot of more than 147 million dollars. What is the success of the painting?
We see two girls found in an abandoned hut in a dark forest. They lived here in some mysterious way for five long years. The girls are utterly wild as they have been cut off from the world. They are taken by their only relatives, a young couple. Soon it becomes clear that the girls are not alone, someone comes to them from the darkness, something mystical and unknown.
I was excited to watch this movie, ready to see an interesting and new story. I have a double opinion about this film. The movie begins very sinister and dark, first going along one channel of the genre, then something changes, and we see that the picture turns 360 degrees and goes in a completely different direction. In some places, the cinema is tempting, somewhere boring and drawn out, everything somehow developed to the final. When you watch the movie, you think about it all the time that in the end everything will clear up and there will be something unexpected.
The film is made disturbingly and quite atmospheric. There were scenes that were extremely unexpected, which added to the sharpness between something protracted. The main role was played by Jessica Chastain. Her character was far from the ideal, positive heroine, to which the viewer is accustomed. The woman had her own characteristics, shortcomings. Together with this heroine, the viewer goes through the mystical story, into its depths, waiting for answers to all questions.
When I watched this horror movie, I was waiting for the finale, for some reason I thought that it would be enchanting. The ending really turned out to be unusual, attracting all the attention. The idea and story of this film was interesting and fresh, but the movie did not inspire me much. I think that this story could have been much more mysterious and sharp film. I was missing something when I was watching.
"Mama" is a 2013 mystery horror film and more for cinemas. The film is specific and unfinished, but the idea was worth it.

There are many different qualities in man. But there are those that cannot be unbiased and fully explained even from the point of view of science.
One of these qualities is called maternal instinct. That's what's so beautifully portrayed in this film.
I honestly don’t understand why the movie “Mama” received such a low rating, because the picture is simply amazing, very peculiar and interesting.
The picture, in my opinion, deserves a rating of 8-9 points.
The film cannot be called frightening by the generally accepted norms of the genre. The film “Mother” does not take its viewer “meat” that goes to him only in an unconditional plus, and delays the action, from viewing which you can not take your eyes off.
It is not so much frightening its viewer, as it fascinates with an incredible unique plot from the first minute to the end, it is very original and the main thing for which it is worth praising is the touching exciting atmosphere.
Of course, it is worth being honest and note that if you are a fan of this genre and have watched many films, you will see “similar places” from other films, but these as they can be called “stamps” are perfectly woven together. And all the “stamps” are implemented so qualitatively that they have absorbed all the best that is in the genre of mysticism and drama.
This picture flies like one moment, it is on the one hand simple, but on the other hand shot so competently that it is simply impossible to find fault.
In short, this picture can be called “dramatic mysticism”, the film can safely “pull you to tears”. And after watching it makes you think about a lot, despite its genre, from which the viewer is accustomed to catch only “screams”.
The film “Mother” is above many horror films, when you watch, you see that this movie is high-quality and that during its shooting, the creators tried to create this “dramatic afterlife masterpiece”. Shooting is simply at the highest level, very good, easy and interesting to perceive when viewing.
Speaking about the actors who all showed themselves worthy, it is worth highlighting the girls, despite their small age, they managed to play like real professionals in their field.
This movie, it is worth admitting, is slightly and predictable, but unusually attractive with a unique unthinkable atmosphere, from which you can not be distracted for a moment.
It is definitely worth the attention of all those who love mysticism.
And he doesn’t like the film just a beautiful picture, although it certainly does. But also the meaning that leads to thinking about the “eternal”.
“Blood lovers” in the movies definitely pass by, because this film is not for you.
And the movie "Mama" from me
I watched this movie with my mom and my mom was impressed, and so was I. Mom is a very stylish and good movie, for those who missed real horrors and thrillers with a dramatic bias, so that it was scary and the heroes empathize. This is a real live movie, recently watched the Shelter and I liked it incredibly rich in emotion and horror film, and this film is the same, an interesting actress in the lead role, and the main star of the film two girls played amazingly, there are no complaints.
There would be no claims to the film at all and major drawbacks (gaps are insignificant), if not for the ghost almost everyone went through it, and unfortunately I am no exception, the ghost reminded me of the Thai film Phobia (a story with schoolchildren), also kind of scary and funny. To someone my mother reminded the famous Japanese Yurei, I fundamentally disagree, because for me Yurei is much cooler, more terrible and besides he is not killed. And so the film for me is a good example of a horror film, with the right atmosphere of fear, the musical accompaniment is not obtrusive and does not interfere with viewing, and I also liked dreams, very colorful (reminded Silent Hill) in terms of history and morality, and she is undoubtedly present here, girls are insanely pathetic, since childhood did not know parents, especially the younger one.
The ending for someone can be controversial and for me the logical conclusion of the story, without speculation, the continuations of which Americans love so much. The last scenes were very touching and very beautiful from the aesthetic side, but the whole film was very beautiful - the forest, butterflies, the house and the girls themselves are pretty. Overall, Mama is a good horror film with a dramatic bias, which I think gives food for thought.
Honestly, I don’t know how to call “Mom” a film that can not tickle nerves, looks at least dishonest.
“Mama” is one of the few horror films where the plot is not as important as the action itself. Moreover, almost to the last minute, the film looks better than many, like “Astral”, “Sinister” and all the combined “Exorcists”, of course, not counting the 1973 film. And even Oculus loses to Mama in the atmosphere of evil, this invisible demonic presence that you feel with your skin, you know, it's indescribable. In this film, there is a lot of this, and the level is the highest. Something similar happened to me when I watched The Conjuring. That is, the film “Mother”, it is quite competently shot and good horror, I would put it, probably, in the top 5.
I like the ability of directors to put so many emotions, negative ones, into an empty space on the screen. Movies of the past, take the same "Rebel from Hell", of course good, but for the most part it's meat movies, blood, corpses, meat, murder. Which was amazing at first, but like the rest of the movie, the horrors have changed. I don’t think today’s moviegoers are shuddering at Freddie, like we did, those of us who grew up on meat horror movies, or Pet Cemetery. Those who watch the “Speech” will perceive fear differently. That is, today horror movies are more focused on the subconscious, on the sensory element, on logic, on the psyche. And then “Mother” is the same movie that scares you with an empty room, that is, the rest draws your imagination. In fact, it is an incredible talent to make people afraid without blood, without stereotyped images of evil, only occasionally showing, even more hinting at something terrible and thereby heating the atmosphere. You see, you need to be able to direct the viewer's thought in the right direction, without resorting to templates. Try to capture an empty room on camera, hang it with black rags and it will be funny, not scary. This is the talent to show what you want instead of what you have.
For me, there are only three such films, before that there were two: The Spell and Oculus. Now Mommy's still. Despite the fact that the end, which was supposed to give answers to questions, only gave rise to new ones and in fact shifted the guidelines, giving out an unfounded and, to put it mildly, incomprehensible and not logical end. But when you start watching you don’t have to think about ending, enjoy the amazing atmosphere of the devil. This is a rare film where the sudden appearance of the object of fear is not annoying, but you shudder, but immediately forgive, because all this is in the theme, so to speak.
The plot is simple: she is a mother, no matter what is not yours, the main thing is that she believes that you are her child. In general, a wonderful film, watch at night, alone on plasma, but the tablet will do. I will not describe it more precisely, I have described it before.
The true object of fear is in this film, real, spiritual, diabolical, can grab the soul, the horror that lurks in spiritual hell and that is where you touch it.
And I want to point out that the movie has a logic right up to the end. Take for example “Babaduk”, there is a real illogism and it only 40 percent corresponds to the horror of “Mothers”, the rest 60, you will only give “Mother”.
A good, high-quality horror film, shot in the style of “Oculus” and “Spells”, a film where you feel horror, not only with your eyes, but also with your skin.
Mother is the first word, the main word in every destiny.
And “mother” is the name of such an ambiguous thriller.
I really like Jessica Chastain. She is quite beautiful and she is quite talented. She is unlike any other actress in Hollywood today. There is something in it, either in the game or in appearance. Here Jessica in all its glory - and the role is unusual, and played great.
I really like when you believe in the acting of children from beginning to end. And if the genre is not drama / melodrama - and children have to play fear / madness / wildness (all this against the background of special effects - that is, against the background of nothing) - I'm really fond of it. I sometimes even forget the thread of the plot when I see an episode with a child where he runs on all fours like a wild beast or plays with a ghost. I'm sitting there thinking, how the hell did they get such a capricious creature like a child to show their acting abilities? Is there a parent sitting stern and hand/belt ruler on the very spot being beaten if the child loses concentration? Wow, great play of children's roles - it's great!
I love it when writers/directors/producers don’t try to reinvent the horror/thriller bike. They shoot according to the canons of the genre, which we - overzealous viewers-film lovers sometimes call the curse word "cliché". Yes, of course, we will scare the "boom" scenes. Yes, he/she will approach the wall/mirror/clothes and there the "Wah" will pop out! All this will be and is. Instead, they try to develop the plot in more detail (the girls lived for several years in the woods - someone cared for them, etc.) and whet the atmosphere, thanks to good acting, appropriate music, a dark house and plot moves like she was left alone with children = despair and loneliness.
That's what I like about this movie. All this is present in proper proportions. What? Why is the review neutral? Did you see the ending? Why take that off? What was that? Why do we need this missing child mystery that leads nowhere? And after all, since she squeezed his heart, why the hell is he alive? Oh, you, the creators of Eating and Beating... This movie was ruined...
Mama The film is not revolutionary but very high quality. And for the director's debut, it's not bad at all. That’s just too much to see the influence of Guillermo del Toro, who was the executive producer of this film. I love his work very much, but in this situation I would like to see what Andres Muschetti himself can do.
The plot of the film is simple but interesting. It’s especially gratifying that the story is told throughout the film, not as it usually happens in horror movies, just before the end. But the abundance of genre stamps is certainly depressing. Little girls, ghosts, houses in the woods, we have seen all this, and not once. We cannot say that all this is poorly implemented here, on the contrary, the implementation looks very decent, but freshness is badly lacking.
The actors did their job perfectly. Especially pleased with the youngest participants of the picture. It is not often in the movies that you see children who really try to get used to the image. Jessica Chastain and Nicholas Coster Waldau perfectly played their guardians. By their game, you can trace all stages of the development of relations in the emerging family.
Visually, the movie looks good. The appearance of the mother is very detailed. And the overall visual style creates a viscous and oppressive atmosphere.
So the film is a great debut for a young director. You just have to learn to express your ideas.
The film left me with very conflicting feelings. In my opinion, the first half of the film was very interesting and really scary. Just this part of the film was made in the format of a thriller: an upheaval, reinforced by sinister music, interesting characters, a developing story and a certain charming uncertainty. If the whole film had been held in such tension, it could have become perhaps the best thriller of the year.
But my whole impression of the film spoiled the appearance of my mother, and the transition from a thriller to horror. It was a very banal character, not a bit frightening, and something like a spider from Silent Hill. After the appearance of the mother, the whole horror movie becomes incredibly template, so familiar that it can not only frighten, but also just surprise. Uncertainty disappears, and now you can just predict what will happen in a minute and how they will try to scare us.
The ending of the film was incredibly boring and predictable. The complete lack of dynamics was surprising for the horror genre. By the end of the film, I had completely lost sight of him. Therefore, I can say from myself that the final was merged. It was very sad to see how lost interest in the film.

P.S. If you are not a fan of the genre, you can safely watch it, for sure it will scare you and surprise you. And for lovers of watching horror movies before bed, this film will leave nothing but disappointment.
Over this masterpiece you can either laugh from the heart, or cry, the third is not given.
Many say that the director managed to create a really terrible creature. Personally, I wanted only to laugh at this poor “mama”, I may be fearless, but this “zigzag” moving on four limbs caused only a wave of laughter.
Yes, Andres Muschietti created a very mystical atmosphere, picked up good actors, especially Isabel Neliss, who played Lily. The girl amazingly played the role, conveyed all the emotions that needed to be conveyed without resorting to a lot of text.
The end is ambiguous, clearly set to continue, which once again causes only negative emotions.
I add the ball for the fact that in the film did not kill a single animal, as it was in the Spell.

For me, not a big fan of horror movies, this was an interesting discovery. First, because the actors were children and their mother. The plot itself is imbued with their story, which will unfold closer to the final, and which is dramatic and touching at the same time. My mother is still a mother, no matter what she is. From that, in all scenes with children there is love and a desire to punish anyone who dares to approach his native child. Everything from the beginning speaks of the mystery that will haunt the whole film. Mysterious death and death wish in the older brother, an attempt to establish contact with the younger. (He should be credited for his sincere desire to help his nieces.) And of course, the main intrigue is how the girls survived in an abandoned hut, apparently eating cherry and moths.
The script is pretty good. There is predictability in some places. This eases the tension, leaving room not to reveal any secrets, but to flinch every time the next “boo”. And there are plenty of them in the only house where the action takes place. After all, this mysterious and so understandable character lives next to the girls and those who are forced to communicate with them. The image is graphic, but it seems to be alive. And sometimes it is too recreated or even "cartoon", although the girls are absolutely not afraid. The only drawback is that the story of the real mother of girls is not disclosed, and the story of the one who became their “mother” is superficial.
For all fans of the genre, when you sit, not taking off the screen, waiting for someone to jump out of the closet, and you always shudder as soon as it happens.
A long time ago, in 2008, there lived a lawyer-grandmother (this profession is a derivative of a woodcutter, dear reader) and he had two daughters. And the wife was, however, not long - in order not to spend money on an extra mouth, shot her grandmother. This is what the crisis is livingly impoverished with people doing ...
His wife was shot, and the children, according to the old family tradition, decided to bring into the forest (after all, a distant relative on the paternal side of them was not someone, but the Toe Boy himself). And then I regretted it, I decided not to suffer.
This, dear reader, is only the beginning. Made the genes boy-and-fingers to know about themselves, survived the girls, in the forest settled ...
The whole set of stamps of the times of Charles Perrault interspersed with the cliche of Burton’s “Sleepy Hollow” looks quite fresh (surprisingly) in the entourage of the 21st century, smoothly flowing into a good horror.
The tension is escalated by the true, long-tried method of “judging by the terrible music, we were approaching a terrible place”, the production is replete with “standard provisions” and standard shots, and that the director is just beginning his way in cinema becomes clear before you look at the list of his film achievements, but, nevertheless, goosebumps at the right moment cover the right places.
Andres Muschietti directed two "Moms" (one in 2008, the other in 2013), taking on the job of not only director but also writer. And if the 3-minute Spanish “Mama” is a horror movie in its pure form, then its full-length English version turned out to be wider not only in time, but also in meaning, a flair of mysticism and fear enveloping the drama of the fateful choice that each of the heroes has to make.
It is not only girls who choose which “mother” to stay with, adults choose: to spend their savings on themselves or on long-term, hopeless, in general, searching for missing nieces, to believe in the incredible or not to go beyond conventional scientific ideas, to give up a career for the sake of a loved one or a loved one for the sake of continuing a career, to save your life or the life of a child. The choice is even a ghost: let go or take with you forever?
The interest and Hispanism of this drama is added by the fact that the heroes make the choice not under the pressure of feelings or the dictates of society, but driven by duty and instincts. "I can't leave him with them," says Annabelle, "You promised not to touch her!" cries Victoria. Duty to oneself, to one's own conscience, first of all, the code of honor that makes one believe and keep one's promises, run through the fabric of the plot in a thin red line, an imperative from the time when the honor and word of the Spanish Hidalgo was his most valuable possession. And the only character who violated his vows, who lied to the children, was punished at the very beginning.
Choosing girls is more complex and simple at the same time, due to the fact that for them social norms are blurred or unfamiliar in principle. So Lily and Victoria go from a self-preservation instinct to choosing what seems more familiar and safe. Given that the first 5-7 years of life play a decisive role in human development, it is not surprising that each of them gravitates towards a lifestyle that predominantly led in this age range.
As for ghosts, the choice is determined by the maternal instinct that is inevitably present in most women and positively perceived by most men. Ghost is not just a terrifying thing, from which the main and secondary characters run screaming, it has a biography and motivation, it causes pity, if not empathy. “Mama” not only helped the girls survive in the forest, she was quite tolerant of their departure, claiming, in general, nothing but the opportunity to see and be loved by them. The problems began when she felt the children drift away, carried away by new life, things and sensations that she could not give them. In such a situation, it is often not only ghostly parents who begin to panic. For the undead, the price of the question is at all Shakespearean scale: to be or not to be, to remain in the utter loneliness of the forest, having lost the last human features, or to succumb to the temptation to return the lost children at any cost, to tie them tightly, with a guarantee. It is the ghost that brings the final line under the choice made by each character, and sums up with minimal losses for almost everyone, because girls are the most expensive for the “mother”.
In general, the story and its interpretation on the screen, with obvious errors, cause a desire to celebrate the merits rather than clumsily look for flaws. Among the first can be attributed to the color scheme with numerous shades of green, almost classical musical accompaniment, actors who are all deeply cute, and a great game, and just like that (sisters Nelyss generally love, especially the older), as well as the finale - like and not beyond the standards of the genre, but not trivial, justified by all the logic of events.
The film is like a dish made from ordinary, in general, long-familiar ingredients. So familiar that you put without looking, and the result is a taste, like familiar, but fresh, thanks to a randomly selected proportion. You can, of course, order something art-house for dinner, you can go to try out the dish of the day in the nearest fast food-IMAX, but in the summer evening at home on the sofa, okroshka from a fairy tale, suspense, drama and ghosts will have more than a place.
I can safely relate myself to a spoiled viewer, who will not be surprised by anything, will not delight, will not frighten. In general, to break through a huge reinforced concrete wall between me and the screen, the director, the actor, and in general the entire crew will have to sweat properly. What an astonishment it was when this picture made me constantly follow every twist of the plot. To empathize with the heroes, and the devil are afraid to death.
A sense of humor, fear, and any human feeling is more individual, the threshold of triggering one or another is different for everyone. This film frightened me to the point of horror, as if I fell into a childhood, where I was waiting for the same nightmare.
Look, think, evaluate.
From me:
(for a great cast, clever storytelling, motivation, good directing, the scariest creature in world cinema in my opinion.) )
Oh, it's been a long time since there's been a good horror movie, and this movie wasn't. To be honest, it was the second funniest horror for me after “Drag Me to Hell” (well, seriously, no one beats a goat!). Everything is very predictable, a big slant on "The Woman in Black." Well, leave Radcliffe to fight the crazy dead moms.
"Mama" is not a scary movie at all. Well, twitching on boob effects is a sacred, normal and even just a natural reaction of the body. But in recent times, they have been hacking: if they have shown something paranormal a couple of times sharply, then make it scary so that when it is not shown sharply, it is also scary.
Such a genre as horror rarely gives the viewer worth movies. So People Want Horror!
Some horror films are really frightening, others lead to bewilderment, and still others leave nothing in mind except “what was it?” Canadian horror "Mama", rather, belongs to the third type. It is very difficult to claim originality in the genre, where everything is known along and across. The director-debutant Andres Muschetti decided to distinguish himself and played on the contrast of the gloomy horror film and the cute word “mama”. To be honest, this contrast attracted me to the cinema, combined with an interesting annotation, it made a really powerful impression. A long time ago, cinema did not produce a really good horror movie, and the film “Mother” became one of the most anticipated projects of the year for me.
The film begins with disturbing and insanely beautiful music Fernando Velázquez, in which, in addition to the general tension, lullaby notes are guessed, which set the atmosphere of the whole film. Immediately after the credits, we plunge into a tense environment, periodically replaced by wonderful landscapes outside the window of a car rushing along the highway. And this scene is probably the most emotional and lively in the whole film. The girls' eyes, their fright, their father's desperate madness, all created a very good depressing atmosphere.
The second part of the film is tied to a banal situation - two savage girls fall into the house of distant relatives who are completely unsuitable for the role of parents, especially the main character Annabelle. She does it for the lover, but gradually the female nature of the mother takes over. Although the film can be divided into abstract parts, this fact does not give it neither integrity nor suspense. It is as if it were a piece of cake that was made from one another. Immediately after the girls enter Annabelle and Luke’s house, interest evaporates and it becomes boring to follow up. Not to mention some blatant blunders (" It's time to go to bed, and it's light outside), they are not annoying, but very striking and destroy the atmosphere. The appearance of “mother”, of course, makes you wake up, but, alas, does not scare. This film is not scary at all, a couple of moments where you want to flinch are based solely on boo effects and the general gloom of the picture. Although it is worth admitting that the gloom is performed very well, the muted colors of the film, excellent musical accompaniment, etc.
The final part of the film, in which we meet my mother, would provide a great basis for a good horror, if it was more logical and consistent. In other words, the events that unfold before our eyes are hardly possible to connect into one line - too many questions and oddities remain on the surface. On the one hand, they try to explain why and where, and on the other, under these heaps of plot, the film gradually begins to get stuck in itself, the plot sags, and there are even more questions. And a huge "wow" for the image of the mother, which seems to be alarming, but still does not give high-quality graphics. The visualization of the film borders on Japanese horror films, the style of Buffalo Beale, with references to “Children of Corn” (drawings) and much more. The game of wonderful actors saves, but even she is not able to return the plot to its framework and prevent it from spreading through the film.
Interesting idea, great music, atmosphere, good actors and, perhaps, everything. The film is not remembered, it does not want to review, it does not scare or surprise. So...
I still liked what Andres Muschietti’s short film of the same name grew into. On the one hand, it turned out to be a very standard horror movie with a gloomy atmosphere and a constant whipping up of light anxiety, which is caused by mystical inefficiencies. On the other hand, the horror film came out extremely beautiful and even to some extent fabulous, or maybe, in high language, a little gothic.
There’s something about Guillermo del Toro’s films, which I’ll agree with, but before the finale, the story looked more like a depressingly melancholic attitude to Juan Antonio Bayona’s Shelter. And the finale clearly got a lot from the work of Tim Burton. As for the “boo effects” – there were not so many of them, although the matter was saved by suspense and symbolic oddities present in the plot (moths, feral girls, the image of a rocker for Jessica Chastain, the ghost of a mother – as if the director deliberately picked up for everything about the same style, not devoid of specificity). Of course, some stamps slipped, but they did not get out of the narrative, but skillfully complemented it. Of course, there was a legend associated with a psychiatric hospital - but it did not seem superfluous here. Therefore, each necessary component proudly stood in its place.
I wouldn’t call “Mama” a full-fledged and even more exciting horror, but here is a fascinating spectacle with an abundant touch of supernatural and creepy – definitely yes. Those who like such films will be satisfied: “Mother” has an attractiveness inherent in most mystical films.

As a horror movie, it's a little weak. I am a coward who watches horror only in the light of day, and I have never been afraid. But the plot is stunning, and the ghost story is touching and sad. That's why I liked the movie.
One of the producers was Guillermo Del Toro, whom I consider to be in some way a storyteller, I have repeatedly noticed that his films are fabulously beautiful. So “Mama” is like a fairy tale and a plot, and a beautiful picture. Whether mad, or out of jealousy, but the husband kills his wife and rushes on the run with his daughters. But fate leads them to an abandoned house in a remote forest, where the father, desperate, decides to find the last shelter for himself and his children. But from the terrible death of the little ones saves the ghost of a woman who takes care of them for a long 5 years. Until one day, the girls are found by their kind uncle, who for all these years has not lost hope of finding nieces. But in all fairy tales there are negative and positive characters, here everything is not so clear.
I liked the detail, the artistic decoration of this story, for me were moths that preceded the appearance of the ghost. And the charming little Lilly, thanks to her, the ghost becomes more real, the girl plays very organically.
A strong impression is made by the final scene of the film, an unexpected outcome, although if you carefully follow the characters, this is the most logical end of this sad story. This is the power of the maternal instinct, even after death.
