When one porcupine wants to warm another, to share his warmth, the closer they come together, the more painfully they hurt each other. It's the same with people.
Evangelion 1.11: You Are Not Alone, 2007
I watched with friends such a bizarre work, from which the head drop really happens in some moments. Serious work, not 14+, not 16+, but all 21+.
Of course, you can see at an earlier age, no one forbids, although even I, looking at my given time interval, will say the following: nothing is clear, but very interesting. So you get it.
A work of great proportions, there is such a story, such an idea, such turnovers that wow. A truly magnificent work, which, like all such magnificent works, has a distinctive feature: a mood that jumps like a pendulum - this is an excellent indicator of the skill of the creators of all such works - the ability to operate with feelings, emotions, the whole mood of the scene, moment.
First, we are thrown into a raging scene with heating up turns, then into a relaxed atmosphere, then again into a hurricane of action, and then once again, it is already fun and fervent. Of course, if it were not for competent voiceover and translation, in our case, all this charm of colors and feelings would be reduced to nothing. But we are lucky, we live in a world with feelings ... maybe not lucky, but in this case there are advantages, and weighty.
Of course, there are many questions when viewing and after viewing this work, a sufficient amount of unexplained content comes out to the researcher. And then you ask yourself: is it not too rash move: this is how to blame everything on the unenlightened? Perhaps, but it is still a stimulus, so to speak, a desire to understand, to study, to fill the emerging gaps. At least I'm betting on it because that's how it worked for me. Partly.
Plus, this is a re-release of the 1995 animated series, which, by the way, you also need to watch and feel the feelings of the characters living in it. For here the main milestone is still feelings, yes, actions here are also hurricane-scale, especially with such a “wild” presentation, but still feelings are the leader of all events and actions.
In short, I liked it, a cool and interesting thing. Of course, I don’t catch depression from Eve, and why? Immunity should be developed for this. Plus, this is not the most "emotional" part, as I understand it, will be even more powerful.

Evangelion's rebilt was much better than the original. The new format cut out most of the empty chatter, leaving enough scenes of everyday life in the city on the surface, which provided the lion’s share of the pleasant atmosphere of the original. Shinji remained a whiner, but now he has been given a little less timekeeping, and it's not so infuriating. Ray got more character. In general, where you need to correct, the bad was removed, the good was left. Differences with the original story are minimal.
Please put “Evangelion” disclaimer: “only for those who watched the series”
From a movie called “Evangelion” you expect some depth. At least the gospel connection. And here's...
Why not call the picture something more relevant to the content? As a model, I set the Pacific Rim. Although "Evangelion" is not a comedy, everything is served here on serious occasions, the name should be changed, because it is impossible to take the film seriously yourself - it will be terribly boring.
I will make a reservation right away, I did not watch the series, but it seems that it is not necessary to watch the film, it is not indicated on the cover. The following unanswered questions for the film are absolutely fair. I compare it to the Pacific Frontier. Everything is explained and explained quite logically. That is, we know who the kaiju (analogues of the angels of the “evangelion”) are, where they came from, why only those who control them can control robots, etc. Let me remind you, “Pacific Frontier” is a comedy action movie, but even here, the universe of this action movie is revealed. The plot is clear and clear. And you can empathize with heroes.
And the Gospel. I don’t think there’s a spoiler in the movie, so let me explain. There are no answers about the universe in the film. And this film is independent, this is not a continuation of the series, but, apparently, except for me, all who watched the film and the series, so I will be in the minority. At the end of the film I know as much as after reading the preview of the film, that is, a few lines describing the beginning of the plot.
I don’t know who the angels are, why they attack in turn, why only these children can become pilots, why these children go to regular schools, why angels are called angels, why people know the number of these angels, that is, how many more will come, what the fuck is this about the gospel and the Bible and why can a penguin read a newspaper? ?
Okay, the last one is forgiven, but the rest? And I haven't said that about the absolute cliche of this anime yet. Ohh, 7. 64...
There's one more thing that hurt me. The boy is the main character, constantly deciding for himself the question of "pilot or not to pilot this robot." I refused to understand why, until he was told, “If you don’t get in the robot, humanity will die,” the guy replied, “I know, I know, I’ve been told that many times.” And this guy is trying to justify, and he needs sympathy? It seems to me that he can be rightly called Satan – he too longs for the destruction of the entire human race. Is that a gospel connection? I don’t know, maybe the world is going somewhere wrong.
Finally, an objective assessment of the film itself. What you can't take away from him is the atmosphere. Everything written above is trying to destroy it, but it's there throughout the film. Perhaps in order to relax this clichéd anime is very suitable.
And I can't help but throw out the last remnants of disappointment. The main character by the end of the film frankly infuriates. Like Bodrov in "Brother." Well, in "Evangelion" the main character at least does not smile.
"Evangelion: You’re Not Alone is in its first half an unambiguous reshoot of the 1995 anime series, or rather its first episodes. The only difference is that here the viewer listens to much more unvisualized exposure, which, of course, is not very good in terms of cinematic content of the tape. However, this is necessary in order to accelerate the dynamics and quickly introduce into the course, so to speak, the affairs of the viewer who is not familiar with the original TV adaptation of the manga.
Actually, the author of the manga, Hideaki Anna, is the director of the notorious twenty-seven episodes, as well as the follow-up feature films of 1997. He is also a director here, why there is no need to make any claims to deviation from the original idea: everything is kept within the framework that has long been indicated by the author, and he is not going to retreat from them. Except that somewhat downplaying the philosophical content of his creation, because here, and it can be seen, a lot of emphasis was made on action and visualization: everything looks so beautiful that, despite the fact that this year the tape is already ten years old, everything still looks very beautiful and colorful. The dynamics have increased dramatically, and some of the introductory part is not even very boring: as it was said earlier, the exposition occupies almost the entire first half of the film, but it is so competently "diluted" by personal and interpersonal conflicts that the story "enter" is quite simple and easy, even without having the honor of being familiar with the television series in the past.
From which, by the way, the second part of this picture begins to differ significantly: let the backbone of actions remain unchanged, some small details are added, and some disappear. In what disappears, a zealous admirer of the “Evangelion” of 1995 will see a considerable disadvantage, for long monologues with meditative reflections of the characters, in which they fall into somnambulism from their own feelings and emotions, after which abruptly returning back to the, as if, foreign and psychedelic world is what, in some ways, saturated the anime series, nurtured its charm, turning it into a cult creation of Japanese animation. It is in these arguments that many people still find support for building their own philosophy, or even see the only true worldview that they try to succumb to, which is not so easy and appropriate in the realities of our world. But that's not the point, that's the point. The point is that part of what the Evangelion did, strange as it may sound, was the Evangelion.
And what happens, that inner core is not here? The ephemeral core that every Hideaki Anno Angel has is missing from the story of, in part, these Angels.
Nope. I can't say that clearly.
Yeah. It is now a mass media product aimed at a much wider audience than before. Yes, the authors got rid of objectively boring, and sometimes unnecessary, monologues. And yes, some of the atmosphere of the 1995 Gospel was lost. In its place came a different entourage: more rapid and rapidly developing, but not so encouraging to think about higher matter and universal truths.
That is, in the end, it turns out that on the one hand, the product is now not so multilayered, but it attracts a much larger audience. And it does it very well: the philosophy of self-knowledge of the little man through the control of something huge and immeasurably important is preserved. And although here it is still rudimentary, the ending clearly makes it clear that there will be a continuation. And, most importantly, I want to see it: despite the unusually rapid development of both history and heroes for a long-time admirer, the visual design and warm feelings are amazed by the at least slightly preserved original concept, which, as the last seconds promise, will be developed.
For the average viewer, everything is done at an extremely high level. "Evangelion." You are not alone, a film that, along with quality action, gives food for the mind. This food is simple and not yet ennobled by a multi-level view, but at the same time here, I repeat, it is only a seed. Therefore, if you try to consider the film in detail and without subjectivity, I want to say that it is quite good. Its ending is blurred, and the beginning is somewhat confused - again from the position of an independent work of art. However, this does not prevent you from enjoying the work of the studio “Khara”. Lovers of the genre are definitely worth a look.
Many words have already been said above, so I do not see any point in talking about the intricacies of the plot (everyone knows about Eve either from their own experience or heard from other people’s reviews), to talk about the idea of anime or its meaning (almost everyone has their own indisputable opinion about Eve) and to list all the episodes of the original that have been changed or cut from Rebild I will also not (I will leave a second-by-second analysis of the film to true fans who know Eve as “Our Father”). And I want to tell you about how this version of Eve differs from the ancestor, in what it resembles him, and what it has its own, and, finally, why suddenly Rebuild caused sympathy much more than the original.
The first thing that immediately pleased in Rebilda is that the film does not become a banal cut of the original series, as it almost always happens with all kinds of Director’s Cut (in this regard, the full-length Death Note is the brightest representative with a minus sign of such projects). After all, it would be very simple and logical in its own way after so many years to make a marketing move to squeeze the last forces from the brand of past years. However, the authors of this meanness in relation to the viewer did not go, for which they first thank you. Rebuild of Evangelion is an original work in its own way, it is certainly filmed “based on motives”, but at the same time it has its own zest and corrects (or improves) many of the shortcomings of the serial ancestor.
Thanks to his compressed form, Rebild turned out to be much more concise, more rapid and exciting. There is less chewing, less straining tears and playing on the optic nerves. Yes, in part, Eva loses this sucking swamp effect, which caused some to go into trance and others to irritate. The dynamics of the film and its concentration are incompatible with the dimension and severity of the original. Evangelion is an anime based much more on psychology, on reading between the lines, than on any strict and obligatory sequence of events and presentation of facts. Therefore, the authors managed to painlessly cut out many episodes, making the action of the film easier, but not too impoverishing it.
Speaking about how the shortened form of Rebild affected the disclosure of the characters and plot, I note that the film became a little more distant from the characters themselves. After all, Eve can be quite clearly divided into two parts: the conventionally basic narrative of how mechs-evangelions fight angels, and the story of how children-pilots in the break between battles fight with themselves. Now, if it was impossible to sacrifice the first, then most of all that was cut fell on the second, although it is in the narrative between the battles that all the salt and the idea of the dramatic component of the Evangelion are contained. What was the significance of the series? The fact that it was replete with internal conflicts and micro-conflicts of heroes, it was full of breakages, full of sharp corners. Rebild in this respect inferior to the original: if the first film was still balancing on the boundary between “internal” and “external”, the continuation clearly gave priority to the second. However, I cannot say that this is definitely bad or good. Having lost in one, a new Evangelion gained in another.
Evangelion was and remains a very characteristic and revealing work for all modern Japanese animation. Without exaggeration, we can say that Eva became the progenitor of a huge number of anime, it hides a lot of ideas and motifs that were used, used and will be used in more than one work. Neon Genesis Evangelion is absolutely typical (in the best sense of the word) for the Japanese picture, and Rebuild of Evangelion is no exception here. Eva’s problems with her question “can the present be sacrificed for the future”, her idea of “chosen” of child pilots, the contrast between science fiction and psychological drama, and the problems of painful maturation and socialization – all this is so inherent and characteristic of Japanese culture. It is good that the authors of Rebild did not invent the wheel and revered the traditions.
All together, I would rate a solid “good,” maybe even with a “plus.” I do not know how successful this film is for ardent fans and fans of the original series, there will probably be those who will stigmatize Rebild for its secondary, for its succinctness, for anything else, but from the position of an outside viewer who treats Eva more calmly and restrained or who has never watched Eve, this cycle of the Gospel in a new way will be a great alternative or prologue to acquaintance with a heavier original.
A young schoolboy came to an unfamiliar city to meet his father for the first time in many years. And the father, without even hugging his son, handed him the keys to the device to save the world and said: "Save the world or go away." The planet was on the verge of destruction, terrible alien machines trampled and burned cities, and the last hope of mankind lay in the hands of an underage boy, and the boy just wanted to be hugged by his father. Because he was alone in this dead and iron world. All alone.
Solitude and silence create monsters. The empty world is filled with philosophical digging and floods the streets with the blood of angels. Evangelion’s thought experiments indiscriminately analyze the nooks of human pathologies, pathetically and viscously pouring from empty to empty, and cut the truth-uterus of their own mythology, where people once again turn into laboratory mice with the cynicism of Douglas Adams. Fragments of white buildings rise above the red lakes, like bones above a disgusting mince of what was once a living creature. In such a paranoid environment was born... well, say Jack. As my own thought experiment. And he was once handed a world control panel that had just one huge red button on it. No one knows what will happen if you click on it, but it is known that this remote somehow controls the world. Jack is not part of Evangelion, but a direct descendant of Evangelion, emerging from the narrator’s empty head. And when one clear day he gets sick of everything - he deigns to press the button. For me, this is the concept of a new generation of Evangelion.

Logical mystery: How long does it take Shinji to find God? Answer: Not at all because there is no God. However, I will continue to write about it with a capital letter.
Love and duty to keep this love is the critical force of Evangelion, who once stirred up the anime industry. Everything so amazingly incomprehensible, pathetic, cruel and conceptual. Millions of meanings. Religious, mystical, scientific. About robots that fight Godzillas and bleed. About people whose void is filled with red liquid.
Girded with mental throwing and a difficult childhood to the limit, Jack holds the red button. Once upon a time, in an attempt to protect a man, he severely burned his hands. Now his hands have healed, but he continues to gnaw at his fingers "because he itches." Eyes are wild, fingers are all blood, and the remote almost slips out of sweaty palms. Let's talk about humanity, he suggested. The higher science jumps, the more meaningless human life. In the future, people are not enjoying a more perfect life. People dig deeper into themselves. Even in the minds of great visionaries, the people of the future are a plastic toy on a shelf covered in dust. A strange creature, they say. Incomprehensible alarms.
Anxiety drives Evangelion. The emptiness of the soundtrack, the emptiness of the heroes, the oppressive loneliness do not dissolve in action and action. It's concentrated schizophrenia.

Logical mystery: How long does it take Rey (Eve's other pilot) to spin the light bulb? Answer: Not at all, because the light bulb is already twisted. However, I will write about it again with a capital letter.
There is nothing criminal about Evangelion’s incomprehensibility. Evangelion is the confession of Hideaki Anno, his personal creation, his gut. Devastated, crippled and in a state of permanent rebirth. And his feelings are transmitted not only through the main character, but through the whole dead world, uncausedly destroyed by terrible monsters. Probably, Evangelion is not a bunch of theories under one brand and with meaning hidden behind rhetorical questions, but an attempt to ask these questions to the environment, a philosopher’s craving for philosophizing.
The desire to deal with this world in justice absolute, ephemeral. No revenge, they say. No harm. But don't dissolve. Jack's fingertips are gnawed to the bone. Snatched hair, bruises, pale skin. Jack seemed to be falling apart. But he had the remote. With each blow, he did not get stronger. But it didn't break. He went into himself and locked the door. Curling up in a thorny tangle. Eyes widening, crooked. My hands were shaking less and less. We'll redraw everything, they said. Fix it, rethink it. Humanity will be bright, but machines have become even more beautiful, attractive cruel landscapes. They said they would remake humanity. But they changed the audience. They see the same things, dead and reborn. Salvation is out of the question. Because you don't know what happens if you press the button. Will it be good or bad? Who should I ask? Monsters? Robots? God? It's so schizophrenic, it's like there's no remote. Self-immolation, they said. Jack had to press the button. I went over to Jack and pressed her instead.

The original Evangelion had 26 cents of episodes of 25 minutes. In the rebirth of Evangelion, only part of the plot was tampered with. But even at the same time, there was no confusion and clumsiness in the full meter. As a result, shielded from the ensuing insanity in the finale, the rebirth of the series developed its original philosophy of omissions and unfulfilled roles. From now on, independent of the old order, the director placed the accents exactly as he might have intended from the beginning. And the revived Evangelion, enhanced graphically and cut physically, will now use pauses between series with less injury risk to viewers.
Recently MA and Reanimedia licensed in Russia "Evangelion 1.11", I immediately ordered a collector's edition, which turned out to be at a fairly good level for such a price. The dubbing itself pleased me, although I am a supporter of subtitles, but if you want, you can switch to subtitles. I write all this simply so that people know that Rea tried and took seriously my favorite work, so you can be sure of the quality and order yourself a DVD, if you are a licensee and naturally, if you want to watch this animated film. I think I’ll end there and talk about the anime itself.
Let me start by telling you a little bit about “You are (not) alone”. Studio Gainax, which became famous thanks to "Evangelion", many years later decides to restart the masterpiece in the form of several full-length anime, which will differ from the main series. Despite this, "You are (not) alone" is nothing more than a brief retelling of the first series of the original, with adjustments that most of those who have watched the original no more than once will not even notice. Of course, it would be strange if everything remained as it was, in the first place, the animation was changed, of course, after so many years this is understandable and it would be strange if the creators decided to leave everything as it is, although the graphic component is not so important to me. I thought so until I saw it on the big screen (unfortunately not the cinema), I couldn’t even describe the excitement I felt. I can say with full confidence that this is one of the most beautiful animated films I have seen, only "Evangelion 2.22". However, even after this, there were a lot of dissatisfied, everyone said that 3D graphics were not needed, that the characters no longer looked like themselves and much more in the same vein. Of course, nothing can be done with this, there will always be many dissatisfied, but the work will not get worse from this. Personally, as a lover of the original, I can say with confidence that the authors tried their best and did everything as well as possible. The most important thing is the atmosphere of the Gospel, and they managed to keep it, even after so many years, even after many key points had to be removed. For the first time it happened that trying to please both fans and ordinary people, Gainax did the impossible and pleased both; although those who did not watch the original may still not understand many things. I will not say anything about the plot, since many people pay too much attention to this component, and very often scold the series for its script, which many do not like. For me, the Gospel has always been more than anime or a favorite work, it has become so dear to me that I can’t imagine how anything can be compared to it. I never looked for any hidden meanings in it, never tried to read about the plot somewhere to better understand it, I just felt it, literally on the level of emotions. Perhaps few people will understand me, but this is my dearest work, which I love so much that I can never express it in words. And I am very glad that the Gospel remains itself even after it has become the Gospel in a new way.
Please let me sleep next to you. Any place is fine.

Without regret, my eyes are only on you.
