Desmond Llewelyn was born in South Wales in 1914 to a mining engineer. His acting career began in the school theater, where he was a stage worker and from time to time received small roles.
His family did not consider theater a worthy occupation, so the uncle of the future actor, who held a high post in the police, wanted to find him a decent job, sent Desmond to the medical commission. “Thank God, I didn’t see her,” Llewelyn joked when his film career had already brought worldwide fame.
After this event, Desmond persistently sought an opportunity to realize his acting talents and in the mid-30s was admitted to the Royal Academy, Department of Dramatic Arts.
The outbreak of World War II interrupted his acting career, and in the winter of 1940, Llewelyn, a junior lieutenant in the British Army, was already fighting in France. After a short battle, Llewelin’s battalion was surrounded and surrendered. Desmond spent five long years in German captivity.
After the war, Llewelyn returned to London and resumed his work in theatre and film. And in 1963, by chance, he got his starring role as Q in the film From Russia with Love. Since then, he has appeared in every subsequent Bond film, with the exception of the 1973 film Live and Die. Calls from outraged admirers of Desmond's talent permanently discouraged producers from trying to replace him with someone else. In addition to the films about 007, he played in two dozen films.
After the actor played the creator of ingenious devices for the great spy in the film "And the whole world is not enough", a tragedy occurred - in December 1999, at the age of 85, the only permanent creator of the image of Kew died in a car accident.
