He was born on 5 November 1941 in Emersham County, Buckinghamshire. The son of actor David Langton, who played in the seventies Richard Bellamy in the television series Up, Down. For several decades, since the mid-sixties Simon Langton has worked as a director on British television. A master of costume dramas, Langton is known mainly for his adaptations of literary works such as Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca (1979), Emil Zola's Teresa Raken (1980), Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina (1985). A special feature in this series is the serial television film based on Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice (1995) with the participation of Colin Firth and Jennifer Ely, which won critical acclaim and a wide audience thanks to its masterful production and magnificent acting. Among other works of the Director deserves special mention adaptation of the novel by John Le Caret “Team Smiley” (1982), in which the main role of a retired veteran of British intelligence played the legendary Sir Alec Guinness. Langton also shot separate plots for the popular comedy series based on the works of Pelem Woodhouse "Jeeves and Worcester" (1991), which brought fame to actors Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry and the adventure "Primson" (2000) with the participation of Richard E. Grant.
The director was repeatedly nominated for the award of the British Academy of Film and Television, and in 1990 his television drama "Mother Love" based on the novel by Laura Black brought him this award, winning the drama series "Best". He also participated in the television project Death Rooms, dedicated to the adventures of young Conan Doyle, directing one of the films in the series Kingdom of Bones (2001). For the past few years, Langton has been working on the detective series Rosemary and Tim (2003-2006).
