When he landed the lead role in Lady Nature, his family moved to Manhattan. This role brought Montgomery star status at the age of seventeen. On Broadway, he made his debut in 1942. After good luck in the play by Thornton Wilder, the actor came close to the author, who recommended not to approach Hollywood.
After ten years in the theater, the actor was in debt. To pay off his debts, he agreed to star with John Wayne in the film.
