Ang Lee is a Chinese director and producer. The director is different from others in the sense that he shot what he wanted, without thinking about the question of whether the topic is fashionable and in demand. And it turned out, in the end, that it was fashionable and in demand. Ang Lee is also a collector of “golden statuettes”: “Bears”, “Lions” and other symbols of victories at film festivals in Berlin, Cannes and so on. There are four Oscars in his collection for the film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”. In fact, there were eleven nominations, but some of them “flew by.”
Evil tongues claim that Ang Lee's films can be easily distinguished from other directors by the fact that they "have no style of their own." His fans say he is a very diverse director. This is probably true.
Ang Lee was born in 1954 in Taiwan. He studied, served in the army and considered that his patriotic duty was fulfilled - he went to study in America. He graduated from two universities - in Illinois and New York, receiving a bachelor's degree in theater arts and a master's degree in film production. At the same time, he directed his debut film, the short film Shadows of the Lake, which received an award at a festival in Taiwan. Another student film, The Thin Line, earned him a prize for directing at the New York City Student Film Festival. Ang Lee made his first full-length film in Taiwan in 1992. But the events in the film take place in New York, where the son of the protagonist lives and where his father, a master of tai chi, comes. The setting for the next film, The Wedding Banquet, is also New York, and the subject, at first glance, is the same - fathers and children. But the collision is more than unexpected. Parents go to the wedding of their son, unaware that the son is gay, and the wedding is nothing more than a fiction. The film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival.
Another “golden animal”, also in Berlin, he received for the adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel about the mores of Victorian England “Sense and Sense”. Then Ang Lee, overcoming time and distance, made a film about the sexual revolution in America “Ice Storm” (a prize at Cannes for the script). And finally, the star film Ang Lee – “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”. To make a film based on the novel by Van Du Lu, the director dreamed of many years. The publication of the book in English was banned by the Chinese authorities. Perhaps that’s why in the U.S. the film was undubbed, in Mandarin, but naturally with English subtitles.
