In the early 1980s, Joan Chen starred in small roles in film and television, and a breakthrough for her was a meeting with the Hollywood legend, producer Dino De Laurentis, who invited her to star in the historical film “Ti Pen” (1986) based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell, where the main role, Dirk Struan, was played by Brian Brown. The film was not particularly successful, but thanks to it, the actress played in Bernardo Bertolucci’s grand production The Last Emperor (1987).
