Mario Puzo was born on October 15, 1920 in New York City. His parents were Italian immigrants. The boy began his studies at the New School of Social Research and then continued his studies at Kolubi University. During World War II, he served in the United States Air Force and fought in Germany and East Asia. He then worked for twenty years in government offices in New York and abroad.
His first book, published in 1955, was The Dark Arena. Since 1963, Mario began to work as a freelance journalist, which leads him to serious writing. Glory Puzo brought the novel “The Godfather”, which was published in 1969. In the seventies, this book for a very long time occupied the first place in the bestseller list. And the prototype for the main character Don Vito Carglione was the author’s mother, who made every effort to unite her family and feed her. The author himself admitted that this book was written solely for commercial reasons under the script of the film. He sold the script for $10,000. The film was released in 1972.
In 1978, the novel “Let Fools Die” was written, and then in 1984 “The Sicilian” was published, which was filmed in 1987 by American director Michael Cimino. After suffering a heart attack and heart surgery in 1991, Mario returns to work, and a new work “The Last Don” appears.
On July 2, 1999, Mario Puzo died of heart failure at his home on Long Island. But shortly before his death, he managed to finish his last novel, Omerta, which was released one year later. In 2001, the novel “Family” was released, which the author never finished, but it was finished by the writer’s wife.
