In 1978, Gilles Jacob landed what must seem like a dream job to many film buffs -- he became the director of the Cannes Film Festival, the world's biggest and most prestigious event for international cinema. Born in 1930 to a Jewish family, Jacob survived World War II by hiding out in a Catholic seminary, and developed a passion for movies as a teenager, attending school alongside future director Claude Chabrol. In his late teens, Jacob founded his own film magazine, Raccords, and he later became the chief film reviewer for L'Express (where he lost his job for having the temerity to give The Story of O a bad review). In 1978, Jacob took over as director of the Cannes Film Festival, and set out to make the world's greatest film festival even better by creating new showcases for promising talent (while still maintaining room for gifted veteran filmmakers), expanding the facilities and continuing to entertain and challenge audiences each year. close

The documentary film “Musician” by Anna Matison is dedicated to the talented pianist-virtuoso Denis Leonidovich Matsuev, who is deservedly considered one of the best musicians of our days. This makes him not only impeccable technique, but also the brilliance of sincerity and special passion that imbues his performances. Matsuev’s name is closely associated with the famous Russian piano school, whose traditions he follows, enriching them with his own innovative ideas.
First achievements
Denis was born in Irkutsk and grew up in a musical family, his father was a successful pianist and composer who wrote music for performances held in Irkutsk theaters, and his mother taught piano. From early childhood, the boy learned to music and began to master the game at once on several musical instruments. When Denis was 15 years old, his family moved to Moscow, where he began to study at the Music School at the Moscow Conservatory. A year later, thanks to the charitable foundation “New Names”, the young musician began to successfully tour, including abroad, visiting about forty countries.
Entering the conservatory, Matsuev studied with leading Russian musicians, among whom were Sergey Dorensky and Alexei Nasedkin. Under the leadership of Svyatoslav Balz, he continued to perform in concert programs “New Names”, and in 1995 became a soloist of the Moscow Conservatory. Matsuev’s breathtaking rise as a musician began with the Tchaikovsky International Competition held in Moscow in 1998. Here he won a brilliant victory, and his name thundered throughout the world.
Today, Denis Matsuev’s concerts are scheduled for years to come. It is always ready to host the best concert venues and the most prestigious festivals. To Matsuev’s credit, he does not dwell on his own career and does a lot to promote academic music in Russia. To arouse interest in philharmonic art among young people, he organized several charitable programs.
Without neglecting the regions, Denis is in constant search of new talents, holding various youth and children's festivals and competitions, among which it is worth noting the youth music forum Crescendo, as well as the festival "Stars on Baikal", which is held annually in the homeland of the pianist, in Irkutsk. In the film, viewers will be able to see fragments of delightful performances and go behind the scenes of the largest concert halls, whose doors are always open to one of the greatest musicians of our time. close
