Since school age, John was fond of theater, took part in school theater productions. In 1968, he took the stage for the first time. After graduation, John continues his studies at a local college, and then at the University of Missouri. Throughout his studies, John was assisted by his older brother Leslie Goodman. In 1975, John graduated and received an acting degree. The next stage of John’s life takes place in New York, where Goodman earns a living, participating in productions of the play in the children’s theater and working there as a cook.

In 1978, Goodman managed to become the actor of a small play on Broadway “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. And after a short time, John takes part in many Broadway musicals. For the first time, American viewers saw him in the lead role in the film “Raising Arizona”, and then in the highest-grossing American show “Roseanne”.
