Ostensibly a non-narrative study of various aspects of a rural winter, this short film by one of modern Hungarian cinema’s greatest visual poets has all the spellbinding qualities of his better-known feature debut Sindbad (Szindbád, 1971), but here allied to a winning sense of humour that’s never quite allowed to detract from the haunting beauty of many of the images. The end of autumn is heralded by a few red leaves still clinging to a statue’s sculpted robes, while whip pans across the increasingly wintry landscape and close-ups of rippling water are given character by seemingly random freeze-frames and Zoltán Jeney’s electronic chirrups on the soundtrack. There are recurring shots of birds, migrating en masse, huddled by the icy water or lying individually dead, frozen stiff in the snow. So far Capriccio has been a reasonably generic mood piece, but then the snowmen arrive… close

A 1968 British musical short film (30 mins) starring Judy Huxtable and Anthony May. It was directed by Douglas Hickox. It tells the story of a young man (May) cycling around the Hampstead (NW3) area of London on a Raleigh RSW16. After crashing into a billboard he falls in love with a fashion model (Huxtable) depicted on it. Despite the title, the Belsize Park area does not actually feature. There is almost no spoken dialogue, and the soundtrack to the film is musical virtually throughout. The title song of the film has been a hit for Mireille Mathieu and Engelbert Humperdinck (a top ten hit in the UK and a top 40 hit in the USA) amongst others. The title is derivative of the French film, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg; apart from a musical theme there is no other obvious link. close

The short film by the Soviet and then Ukrainian director Nikolai Mashchenko is based on the story by Alexander Serafimovich, which takes place during the Great Patriotic War. A Soviet soldier rushes to the train with a small blonde girl in his arms. This train should evacuate children from the orphanage to the rear. However, the train leaves without waiting, and four-year-old Tanya finds herself in the frontline position of our troops.
Light and shadows
Not indifferent to the fate of the child soldiers decide to independently deliver the girl to the nearest station. Having set off on a dangerous path, they cross the river and go deep into the forest. Tanya obediently passes from one hand to the other, falls asleep on the soldiers' shoulders, and sometimes she is lowered to the ground so that the girl rests from the journey "above". This summer forest and blond child create an island of peace. Tanya looks at the juicy leaves of the fern, high pines, walking on the ground with bare feet. But adults understand that the forest silence is dangerous, and as if to confirm this suspicion, the roaring of a wounded horse is heard.
On the brink
There was a fight here, and a horse dying in convulsions has to be shot. Tanya does not understand what is happening, but her uncle Volodya and other soldiers are not alone in the pine forest. The Germans are coming to meet them. A fight ensues. Tanya is mortally frightened and tries to escape, but runs into a Hitler soldier. Suddenly everything calms down, and again there is only summer in the world, a deer lurking somewhere, a blond thin crumb and... a fascist.
This doomed guy suddenly feels sorry for the girl. He pats Tanya on the face and tries to leave, but the baby follows him. A Hitlerite hears a Russian soldier approaching the meadow and loudly calls for a quiet girl. Then, in order for Vladimir to find her, the German has to whip Tanya with a leaf of fern. She looks at him with tears: how could it happen that this uncle with good eyes raised his hand on her? The cry of the girl comes to her defender, and two fighters who have preserved a human soul have to come face to face.
Shooting
Despite the fact that the film shows only the “corner edges” of the war, the film “Tanya” was created with the participation of professional army consultants. The film was shot on black and white film - so, it was customary at that time to create paintings about the Great Patriotic War. On the screens "Tanya" first appeared in 1067. close
