Delvaux was one of the most successful surrealist artists, despite never officially being in the Surrealist movement. At the center of Delvaux’s fantasy world is a woman who is often the subject of painful and passive eroticism. Typical scene in the image of Delvaux: a female figure against the background of an infinity landscape surrounded by mysterious Dutch or Flemish architectural elements. The artist’s work was influenced by such masters of painting as Giorgio de Chirico, Rene Magritte, Max Ernst and Salvador Dali. close

Taking more inspiration from The Faces of Death than from the "real" movie world, this documentary shows brutal violence, sex, nudes, some curiosities from various countries. Specifically: we observe porn-taxis, gay-pride, erotic patisserie, child prostitution, children forced to crush coca leaves (this causes them horrible wounds on the skin), human skin trade, sick children (very strong scene). According to the tradition of the movie world, even animals are not spared, even if the cruelties against them are limited to two scenes: the extraction of the heart of a monkey while it is still alive, and the operation on the testicles of a other monkey for testosterone. close

Pat O'Neill, one of the most interesting filmmakers in America today, offers a dazzling reflection on the conflict between nature and man in Los Angeles, or the desertification of the city's surroundings due to its enormous water consumption. More interestingly, it is also a film in the age-old tradition of city symphonies: a film about LA's foundation myths and the dreams it embodies, about its history and (grim) future, its topography and ethnography. O'Neill uses footage from several classic films to recreate the several layers of meaning emanating from the city, juxtaposing images and fantasies and hardly ever allowing one picture to go untouched. George Lockwood's swarming soundtrack is likewise composed of conflicting languages, an elaborate work of plunderphonics in which snippets of sound stolen from movies collide with electronic soundscapes, contemporary chamber music, improv, and what not. close
