Many times during his presidency, Lyndon B. Johnson said that ultimate victory in the Vietnam War depended upon the U.S. military winning the "hearts and minds" of the Vietnamese people. Filmmaker Peter Davis uses Johnson's phrase in an ironic context in this anti-war documentary, filmed and released while the Vietnam War was still under way, juxtaposing interviews with military figures like U.S. Army Chief of Staff William C. Westmoreland with shocking scenes of violence and brutality. close

As a visually radical memoir, CAMERAPERSON draws on the remarkable footage that filmmaker Kirsten Johnson has shot and reframes it in ways that illuminate moments and situations that have personally affected her. What emerges is an elegant meditation on the relationship between truth and the camera frame, as Johnson transforms scenes that have been presented on Festival screens as one kind of truth into another kind of story—one about personal journey, craft, and direct human connection. close

This film follows patients and staff during their treatment. It deals with what would now be called PTSD, but at the time was categorised as psychoneurosis or shell-shock. Government officials deemed this 1946 film counterproductive to postwar efforts; it was not shown publicly until 1981. close

The film is about the previously untold story of the bloody battle of the 8th Air Force against the German Luftwaffe in the months leading up to D-Day. The story comes from the first person of 3 pilots and war correspondent Andy Rooney. Real-life color footage, which has not previously been shown, features B-17s Flying Fortresses, P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51 Mustang. Video footage of the 8mm film indicates devastation following the German raids and the prospect of the collapse of the Luftwaffe. Flying 25,000 feet above the ground in oxygen-deprived air and 50 degrees below zero, the 8th VA waged a war never before seen. By the end, they had suffered 26,000 casualties, more than the U.S. Marines who died in World War II. close
