There is a well-known French director, Henri Verneuil, whose films I once watched were mostly adventure and detective. I read about him and became interested. It turned out that his fate is very unusual. By origin he is Armenian, real name Ashot Malakyan, originally from Turkey. Two of his last works were films based on his own almost autobiographical novel "Mayrick", dedicated to the history of his family - the first film "Mayrick" (in other sources - "Mother"), the second - "Paradis Street, 588". Both turned out to be quite good films with good actors, made with a love for their origins, which Armenians, scattered almost like Jews around the world, preserve. The narrative is conducted on behalf of the hero, starting from his 6-year-old age and ending with quite mature years, when he became a famous playwright and director, in the film, however, theatrical, so he is not 100% autobiographical. His parents starred Omar Sharif, who was banned from entering Turkey after this role, and Claudia Cardinale. The film begins with stories about the genocide in which many of his relatives died, which is told by a family friend who managed to survive, however, remaining disabled. Apparently, the family was quite wealthy, but having emigrated to Marseille, we had to start from scratch. Mairik is the hero's mother, but he says he had three mothers - her mother and her two sisters who moved with them, the rest of the family died, and father Hakob. They all set out to educate Azad, for which they worked hard.
