His parents were historians, so the boy’s passion for this science was instilled from childhood. An interesting fact is that the family was related to Stalin: Nikolai was the grandson of Alexander Semenovich Svanidze, the brother of Stalin’s first wife. Nikolai’s grandmother, Tsila Isaakovna, hated the great leader, since in 1937 his grandfather Nikolai Samsonovich Svanidze was shot. In honor of him, and named his grandson.
In 1977, Nikolai graduated from Moscow State University as a historian with knowledge of a foreign language. He was constantly sent on foreign business trips, during which he worked at the Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences of the USA and Canada.
In 1991, his life connected him with television, where he created his programs “Contrasts”, “Details”, and since April 1996 began to conduct an analytical program “Mirror”. In 1994, Svanidze received the Order “For Personal Courage”, in 1995 – the TEFI Award in the nomination “Leader of the Information Program”.
Nikolai Karlovich is the owner of the Order “For Personal Courage”, which was awarded to him in 1994, and the following year the TEFI Prize in the nomination “Leader of the Information Program” was added to this award.
In 1996, Svanidze was elected deputy chairman, and a year later - chairman of VGTRK. In 2001, Svanidze received the Order of Honor. He is the author and presenter of a series of historical programs on Russian television and a member of the bureau of the Union of Journalists in Moscow. Since November 2005, Nikolai Svanidze is a member of the Public Chamber (OP) of the Russian Federation.
In 2006, Nikolai Karlovich starred in the movie, playing the role of Alyosha Svanidze, the brother of Stalin’s first wife Kato Svanidze in the television series “Stalin’s Wife”. He is also known for his book Politics, Women, Football.
Since 2007, Svanidze heads the department of the Faculty of Journalism of RSUH. The wife of Nikolai – Marina Sergeevna Zhukova, journalist, editor-in-chief of the TV program “Mirror”. In the family there is an only son Andrew.
