Composer and musicologist Sergei Mikhailovich Slonimsky was born on August 12, 1932 in Leningrad in the family of writer M.L. Slonimsky. In 1955 he graduated from the Leningrad State Conservatory named after N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov in classes of composition and piano, studied with O.A. Evlakhov. He was a composer, pianist, since 1959 he teaches at the Leningrad Conservatory, in 1963 he defended his thesis on art history, in 1976 he became a professor. The composer repeatedly turned to composing music for cinema - "Intervention", "Republic of Shkid". Founder and presenter of the Musical Meetings of the St. Petersburg Cultural Foundation. Professor. Member of the Composers' Union. Academician of the Russian Academy of Education. People's Artist of Russia. Laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation named after M.I. Glinka (for the opera "Maria Stuart"), laureate of the Government of St. Petersburg (for 24 preludes and fugues and X symphony "Circles of Hell" by Dante).
