Independent New York director Abel Ferrara was born on July 19, 1951 in the Bronx, New York. But he spent most of his childhood in Peaksville, where he met two young men who later worked with him as a screenwriter and sound engineer, Nicholas St. John and John McIntyre. In the early stages of creativity, the trio indulged in an 8mm camera. The trio later reunited to form Navaron Films.
In 1979, they released their most sensational film, DrillerKiller, in which Ferrara played the main role, worked as an editor, and even wrote songs for the film (under the pseudonym Jimmy Lane). Until the late 80s, Ferrara continues to shoot low-budget “shockers”, and then suddenly switches almost to the “mainstream” – “King of New York”, “Mean Lieutenant” and “Body Snatchers”. On television, Abel Ferrara had a hand in Miami Police. The Vice Department (the one with Don Johnson)
He is still known for his love of low-budget, usually shocking, films in which he explores another badly rotten piece of the Big Apple.
