William Somerset Maugham is an English writer familiar to a wide range of readers as the author of such remarkable novels as Of Human Bondage and The Painted Veil. Born in Paris at the British Embassy in January 1874.William Somerset Maugham lost his parents early: his mother died of consumption in 1882 and his father died of cancer when William was eleven. After the death of his father, William moved to Whitstable (England) and lived with relatives in the family of Henry Maugham.

William Somerset Maugham at various times was educated at the Royal School in Canterbury, at Heidelberg University and at the medical school at St. Thomas Hospital in London. His medical school education was reflected in his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, which was published in 1897.
Among Somerset Maugham's most famous works are The Moon and Sixpence, Rain, The Unconquered and Theatre. He is also the author of dozens of plays (Jack Straw, Landed Gentry, East of Suez, and others). Based on his works, many films were made, starting in 1925 and ending in 2006.
In December 1965, less than a month and a half before his 92nd birthday, William Somerset Maugham died while in hospital in Nice (France). /
